#62 Valparaiso Crusaders: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series. Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days. Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.
We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order. We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.
Butler’s departure from the Horizon League opens the door for the Valparaiso Crusaders to emerge as the top program in the conference. Despite losing a pair of valuable contributors to transfer, Bryce Drew returns a veteran core that should lead Valpo to the NCAA Tournament.

The Green Bay Way

Game #8-330: Green Bay Phoenix at Valparaiso CrusadersDecember 31, 2011 5:05 pmAthletics-Recreation CenterBBState Stats/RecapLike their Milwaukee neighbor, the Green Bay Phoenix were original members of the Association of Mid-Continent Universities (AMCU) with Valpo, but bolted for the Horizon League (HL) in 1994, and now they have to deal with us all over again.Unlike Milwaukee, Green Bay has owned Valpo since they were reunited in 2008. During the regular season, they are 3-1 at the Athletics Recreation Center (ARC) and 3-1 in Green Bay. In their only postseason meeting, Valpo prevailed at the ARC in 2008 to advance to the quarterfinals. Two things are notable about Green Bay: (1) Dick Bennett -- need I say more? His legacy can be felt all around the HL, (2) They play in the shadow of their perennially ranked women's team, which is extremely rare in college basketball. The Lady Phoenix are the Butler of Horizon League women's basketball. The men's team was as high as a ...
