LIU Brooklyn earns NCAA berth with Northeast title

The feel-good story for Mount Saint Mary's was cut short in the championship game of the Northeast Conference tournament.

C.J. Garner scored 31 points and LIU Brooklyn punched its ticket for the NCAA tournament with a 91-70 win over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night - the Blackbirds' third straight conference title.

The fifth-seeded Mountaineers came in riding a nine-game win streak after upsetting top-seeded Robert Morris for a chance to play in the finals. A win for Mount St. Mary's would have topped an impressive turnaround for the team, which started a dismal 2-6 in conference play.

Third-seeded LIU (20-13) was coming off a season in which four of its players were suspended in the fall for their role in a fight and reigning NEC player of the year Julian Boyd tore his ACL in December.

So, beating the fifth-seeded Mountaineers (18-14) was perhaps the sweetest victory in the three-peat.

''Me and C.J. talked about everything we've been through from the suspensions, your player

LIU Brooklyn earns trip to Big Dance

C.J. Garner scored a career-high 31 points and LIU Brooklyn punched its ticket for the NCAA tournament with a 91-70 win over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night in the finals of the Northeast Conference tournament.

Jamal Olasewere added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Blackbirds (20-13), who became the only team to win three straight conference tournament titles. Coach Jack Perri also became the third coach in the conference to win the title in his first year on the job.

After a frantic back-and-forth first half, LIU Brooklyn opened the second half with a 35-31 lead. Led by a decisive dunk by Olasewere and a three-point play from Garner, the Blackbirds went on a 13-4 run to go ahead by 13 only 6 minutes into the half.

LIU Brooklyn didn't allow Mount St. Mary's to pull closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Sam Prescott scored 21 points for the Mountaineers (18-14).

The enthusiastic LIU Brooklyn crowd, which spent much of the second half chanting ''Brooklyn Three-peat'', stormed t

Jamal Olasewere scored 20 points and made a pair of crucial plays as LIU Brooklyn fended off St. Francis Brooklyn 83-75 Sunday, sweeping the season series.

Trailing by one with 1:23 remaining, Olasewere took a feed from Jason Brickman and converted on a spin move in the paint to push the Blackbirds (13-11, 8-4 Northeast Conference) ahead for good. He also made a bank shot for an 80-75 lead with 28 seconds left.

The Terriers (9-14, 5-7) missed 3-point attempts on their next two trips while the Blackbirds hit 3 of 4 free throws.

C.J. Garner added 17 points and Jason Brickman 14 with nine assists for LIU Brooklyn, which hit 9 of 18 3-pointers compared to St. Francis' 2 of 11.

The Blackbirds have won eight of nine since a six-game losing streak, including 78-68 over St. Francis on Jan. 24.

Akeem Johnson's season-high 22 points led the Terriers.

LIU Brooklyn 79, Bryant 78

Jamal Olasewere scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and grabbed a last-second rebound to preserve LIU Brooklyn's 79-78 victory over Bryant Saturday.

The Blackbirds (10-10, 5-3), the two-time defending Northeast Conference champs, trailed 49-42 at halftime before rallying.

Bryant (13-6, 6-2) got 25-points from Dyami Starks, who hit six 3-pointers. Frankie Dobbs added 11 points and Alex Francis 16. But Francis missed a critical late free throw.

Olasewere, who got help from teammates E.J. Reed (15 points), Booker Hucks (14) and Jason Brickman (11), led the second-half surge. Bryant last led 69-67 with 8:32 left after Vlad Kondratyev's basket.

Two baskets by Kenny Onyechi and Olasewere's last bucket put LIU Brooklyn up 79-74 with 2:17 left.

Francis, however, hit a layup, then another as he was fouled with a second left to make it 79-78. But he missed the free throw and Olasewere grabbed the rebound.

LIU suspends four after brawl

The star of the Long Island University Brooklyn basketball team and three other players were suspended Friday after they were arrested on assault charges following a campus brawl.

Julian Boyd, a forward named the Northeast Conference player of the year last year, high scorers Jamal Olasewere and Troy Joseph, and a fourth player, C.J. Garner, were arrested Thursday. They were arraigned on charges of assault and harassment Friday and released on their own recognizance.

Boyd, 22, who was out for a season with a heart ailment, and Olasewere, 21, were the soul of the Blackbirds - high-scorers and tough performers in a team that is a melting-pot of players from all over the country who typified New York's street smarts and swagger. Olasewere was an NEC all-conference selection last year.

The fight broke out during a welcome-back party for students at the Brooklyn campus last weekend. Initially, there was an altercation between members of the basketball and track teams. Then, a second fight broke out between
