Rant: What Is The Point of NFL Fines?

At the bottom of this post from the Press-Gazette is an update about the fines handed out from the Lions game:

Daryn Colledge was fined $5,000 for unnecessarily striking an opponent late. Donald Driver was fined $5,000 for an illegal blindside block to the head and neck area. Nick Barnett was fined $7,500 for a facemask. Spencer Havner was fined for a horse-collar tackle.

I don't recall if Havner was flagged for that tackle, but I know the other 3 players all were flag...

Postgame reaction

ST. LOUIS -- Coach Mike McCarthy said the only two players who sustained injuries were WR Greg Jennings and WR James Jones and both returned to the game.Jennings said he aggravated the wrist injury he sustained in Week 1.In other news from the locker room, LB Nick Barnett said he finished the game on the sideline as part of the new rotation among the linebackers. Barnett was given a set number of snaps and once he reached that point, he gave way to Desmond Bishop.Barnett, who still didn't...

The Great Samurai Controversy

Everyone is a-twitter (see what I did there?) about the Nick Barnett's samurai celebration two plays after he allowed a first down by missing a tackle. Carriveau says that Barnett should "act like he's been there before." Nagler says that everyone should just "shut the hell up." I sympathize more with Carriveau's position over's Nagler's somewhat pious "reminder" that Barnett is "not your kid

Nick Barnett and the Samurai: It is what it is...

In what was an incredibly disappointing display by the Packer defense last Sunday, Nick Barnett lit a firestorm after doing his samurai celebration after a tackle, drawing boos from the crowd and ending up what will be heralded as the first instance of an NFL player taking his Twitter and going home.Yes, Nick brought some criticism, and in his own words, some of it deserved. When you're getting trounced, its not usually looked on with high approval to be doing some me-first celebrations o...

Titans will be a great challenge

After watching the Monday night game and endless amounts of film, I saw that we will face many challenges in playing the Titans this week. The first and most obvious challenge is their run game. With two very talented running backs and a very feisty and physical line, we will have to be ready to exceed the intensity, which should not be a problem. I feel that we are up to the challenge and we are ready for a dog fight!! Early in the year we haven't been very stout in the run game and we are looking for a chance against a team of this caliber to get back on pace. It won't be a cake walk, but that's why we practice the way we do. We do the extra things to be prepared. [...]
