LA Angels Prospect Stock: Post-spring training edition

30. Carlos Ramirez: Stock goes down slightly because he’s repeating AA to prove he can hit and the Angels went out of their way to acquire defensive catchers Chris Snyder and Luke Carlin, only to stash them in AAA. If the Angels weren’t concerned with offense at all and only wanted defense, they would have promoted Carlos…if they were confident in his abilities.

	29. Reid Scoggins: Up. He’s ticketed for A Ball in Burlington. If he really had some rough edges to smooth out, the Angels would’ve kept him in Rookie Ball for an additional year worth of work. The fast is Scoggins’ rocket for an arm should propel him up through the system and catch the eye of scouts very soon.

	28. Michal Roth: WAY UP. After spending last season in short season Orem, Roth has been promoted to AA and will be a starter. He may not have the blazing fastball to impress scouts, but his control and assortment of off-speed pitches could make him a crafty back end starter. What’s more, if he impresses...

Building the Farm: American League West

Prospect lists are one of the best parts of the off-season. Marc Hulet published his top 100 yesterday as the culmination of several months of work, and Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, Keith Law, John Sickels and a plethora of websites have published others. Each group puts myriad hours into analyzing, calling, writing, editing, re-analyzing and finally publishing their work. But even after all that, they usually come to several different conclusions. I decided — instead of focusing on a specific list — to generate a list that combined each of these lists into one.
The idea of community or consensus lists isn’t new. Sites have done it before, but I’ve added some wrinkles:

I included team lists from Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, John Sickels, Keith Law, Jonathan Mayo, Bullpen Banter and our own Marc Hulet. There are more lists out there, but I needed to cut it off at some point. These were the lists that an unscientific Twitter crowd-source noted, and they are also s...

2013 Angels Prospects Countdown #15: Ryan Chaffee

The MWAH prospect countdown marches on with a pitcher who forces us to ask if a guy can have two breakout season in one minor league career?

	Ryan Chaffee
Position: Relief Pitcher Highest Level: Double-A
Throws: Right Height: 6'2" Weight: 195 lbs.
	Age: 24 Born: 5/18/88

	2012 Season Stats
	High-A: 22.2 IP, 2-0,7 SV, 2.38 ERA, 17 H, 9 BB, 2 HR, 28 SO, 1.33 GO/AO, 3.20 FIP, .300 BABIP
	Double-A: 43.0 IP, 5-1, 0 SV, 2.72 ERA, 24 H, 27 BB, 3 HR, 56 SO, 0.79 GO/AO, 3.67 FIP, .231 BABIP

Fastball – B. When I saw Chaffee pitch, he threw an easy 93-94, however, I’ve read older reports that say he sits in the low 80’s and have received word from a scout that he touched 97 a few times in 2012. I’ll stick with what I’ve seen personally, which is a good fastball with movement. The older reports saw him throwing slower most likely due to working out of the rotation and using a sidearm arm slot. He uses more of a low three quarters release now.

MWAH Top 30 Angels Prospects

The Halo farm system is... well, let's be nice and just say it is interesting. The talent is there, it just takes a little digging to find it. And when you do, it is soooo worth it. Let's not forget that the Angels are a team built largely from their own homegrown products, even with the recent reputation for big spending. 13 of their projected 25-man roster members will all be guys the Angels cultivated themselves, so once the cash fountain in Moreno's backyard runs dry, the Angels better hope the farm system's crops are ready to be harvested.

To that end, me (The Monkey, aka Garrett Wilson) and Scotty Allen have combined to put together a list of the 30 best prospects in the Angel system using Scotty's in-person scouting and research and my own research and analysis.

Starting January 2nd, we will be rolling out the in-depth prospect profiles one-by-one. There will be a new profile every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until we get through all 30 playe...

The December 6th, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including details and reactions for Burnett and Blanton signings, why Trout is moving to left field and much more...

The Story: Landing Sean Burnett for two years and $8 million seems like a great deal for the Angels.

The Monkey Says: One thing not mentioned is that Burnett apparently had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow this off-season, which may explain why he didn't get overpaid like all the other top relievers on the market despite the heavy interest in Burnett. There really isn't much not to like here for the Halos.

The Story: Joe Blanton 's contract is a two-year, $15 million with a club option for a third year, which essentially spells an end to the Angels' pursuit of Zack Greinke.

The Monkey Says: I do think that it does foretell that the team will definitely be looking to add another starter and thus bump Garrett Richards to the bullpen or trading ...

Los Angeles Angels 2013 Top-50 Prospects List

Intro by David Saltzer - AngelsWin.com Senior Writer

By now most Angels fans have heard that the Angels farm
system is “thin” on talent. And, in many ways, that is correct.

However, such a description truly does not give an accurate
reflection on the overall state of the farm. While we, at AngelsWin.com are not
such homers as to deny the obvious, we also believe that simply stating that
the farm is “thin” is a misnomer. It does not explain how or why the system got
that way. And, it implies that the overall system is void of talent, when in
fact, there are several bright spots.

Understanding how the system got thinned out will help fans
understand where the bright spots are in the system. Succinctly, the Angels
organization has suffered from 5 key deficiencies.

First, the biggest reason why the Angels are short on talent
relates directly to the success of the parent club. With the draft order in
June being inversely related to the success of the Major League club, ...

Know Your Angels Prospects: Offseason Edition

This offseason, when you’re hanging out by the proverbial water cooler (or a real one for that matter) and a coworker (or a random lady in a pants suit with 80's style hair) brings up the Angels, you’ll want to be prepared to discuss their future. And there’s no better way to fool people into really thinking you know what you’re talking about than discussing prospects. Luckily for you, we here at MWAH have your back.

Catcher: For this one, you just have to know Hank Conger’s name and apply everything they used to say about Napoli to Conger. Yes, we realize they aren’t the same player but just go with it. You can say things like “Why won’t they give Conger a shot?” and “Scioscia just doesn’t like his defense” and everyone will think you know what you’re talking about. If you want to go above and beyond, bring up how beautiful his left-handed swing is.

First Base: You’re going to want to know C.J. Cron’s name. He’s a former first round pick, has “plus” power and g

Arizona Fall League Breakdown: Scottsdale Scorpions

Tentative rosters for the Arizona Fall League were released on Aug. 29. The fall developmental league is designed to help prospects received extra seasoning and coaching at the conclusion of the minor league season. Each organization contributes players to the six-team league. The league typically shifts in favor of the hitters because teams are generally reluctant to assign top arms to the league – unless they’re attempting to make up for lost innings due to injuries.
We’ve already broken down three AFL clubs:
Mesa Solar Sox
Peoria Javelinas
Phoenix Desert Dogs
The Scottsdale Scorpions club consists of players from five organizations – Los Angeles (AL), Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New York (AL), and San Francisco. Below are some interesting names set to appear on the roster. Full rosters can be found here.
Ryan Chaffee, RHP, Los Angeles: A third round draft pick from 2008 (the club’s second choice after losing its first rounder), Chaffee struggled through his first three pro seasons th...

Los Angels Angels Prospect Report

By Scot Stedman - AngelsWin.com Minor League Reporter

Salt Lake Bees - The Bees will wrap up the season on Monday, after having gone 1-6 in their last 7 games, and missing the playoffs. Third baseman Luis Jimenez will enter the final game hitting .309 with a .826 OPS and much improved defense. As always, the knock on Jimenez is his plate discipline, as underscored by his .333 OBP. If Jimenez does not get the call after the Bees' season wraps up, it will tell you a lot about his long-term future with the Halos. Catcher Hank Conger is hitting .291 with a .805 OPS, amid reports of much improved defense as well. Started Barry Enright, acquired from the Dbacks in late July, has been brilliant since joining the Bees. In 53 innings, the 26-year-old Enright has posted a 2.73 ERA and a WHIP just north of 1. As the Bees' season comes to an end, look for some more call-ups to the Angels in the coming week.

The August 30th, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Downs debating if the Angels should pick up Haren't contract option, Angels unlikely to trade for a reliever, prospect Cron undergoes season-ending surgery and much more...

The Story: Should the Angels pick up Dan Haren's 2013 contract option?

The Monkey Says: I say yes because there really is no such thing as a bad one-year deal. Plus, the free agent pitching market stinks this off-season. This is a gamble the Angels can afford to make, assuming they don't know something ugly about how Haren's back condition that nobody outside the organization knows.

Angels Draft Recap: Finding help in the collegiate ranks

The Angels usually have that one big pick every year. It's a marquee player taken early in the draft that defines the direction of the organization. In 2011 it was CJ Cron. In 2010 Kaleb Cowart, and before him there was Mike Trout, Tyler Chatwood and Hank Conger. This year would be different though. The Angels didn't have an early pick. They surrendered their first and second round picks when they signed Albert Pujols and CJ Wilson. So instead of finding an elite player and filling out the depth from there, the Angels were forced to make up for it by making sure their organizational needs were met. They needed to make smart picks and shore up their weaknesses. And what exactly is the Angels biggest organizational need? Relief pitching. Not since 2008, could the Angels count on preserving a lead night in and night out or having a bullpen that could keep them in the game. Current General Manager Jerry Dipoto was once a reliever, and fully understands the importance ...

Los Angeles Angels Prospect Report - 5-18-2012

Salt Lake Bees - The Bees went 3-2 over their last 5 games, an improvement over what the Bees had been doing. The positives: Garrett Richards had somewhat of a bounce back performance on Monday. He went 7 IP allowing just 2 ER and 4 hits. However he did walk 5 batters and only struck out 2. His ERA for the season stands at 4.33. Also, Anaheim native Kevin Jepsen has looked sharp lately. He has tossed 3 scoreless appearances in a row, with his fastball reaching the upper 90's. Offensively, Luis Jimenez has jumped his average to .283 and his OPS to .800. However if Jimenez yearns to be a starting third-baseman in the big leagues, he needs to improve his plate discipline. He has only walked 4 times this season. Unfortunately, left-handed starter Brad Mills has cooled off significantly after a blazing start. On Thursday, Mills gave up 5 ER and 8 hits in just 6 innings of work. His ERA has ballooned to 3.76...

Salt Lake Bees - The Salt Lake Bees have have struggled since the losses of Mike Trout, Alexi Amarista and Jorge Cantu. Overall, they are 18-19 on the season, good for 3rd place in the Pacific Coast League. Offensively, the Bees have been led by Andrew Romine, Kole Calhoun and the veteran Ryan Langerhans. Andrew Romine, the versatile 26-year-old infielder is hitting .333 in 132 at bats with 11 stolen bases. In the field, Romine has helped manager Keith Johnson by making appearances at second and third base, as well as a number of starts at short stop. Outfielder Ryan Langerhans, who signed a minor league deal with the Angels in the off season, has been perhaps the Bees most valuable player. He is hitting .283 with an incredible .442 OBP! Couple that with his 12 extra-base-hits, and you get a .920 OPS for Langerhans. Another outfielder for the Bees who has been nothing but great is 24 year old Kole Calhoun. The A...

Salt Lake Bees - The Salt Lake Bees were battling in a pitcher's duel, until scoring twice in the 9th to secure a 2-1 victory. Garrett Richards toed the slab for the Bees, and he threw a beauty. Richards worked into the 7th, going 6.1 innings, conceding just 1 run and punching out 8. The most impressive stat for Richards was the 8-0 ground ball to fly ball ratio. You read that right, he didn't allow one fly ball all night. That is a very important factor in the Pacific Coast League where the ball can really fly. 24 year old closer Ryan Braiser pitched 2 perfect innings, striking out 2. I imagine the Angels will promote Brasier sometime this year if he continues to throw the ball well for Salt Lake. In the 9th inning, a pair of solo home runs by Ryan Langerhans and Jorge Cantu lifted the Bees to victory. Matt Shoemaker is the scheduled pitcher for Wednesday.

Arkansas Travelers - It's tough to find any positives out...
