Yankees Spring Training Game 17: Nova strong through four innings

New York Yankees 3 — Tampa Bay Rays 1

Ivan Nova pitched four scoreless in today’s 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Francisco Cervelli started the Yankees only big rally in a three-run 8th inning. He started the inning with a single and was pinch-run for. The pinch-runner, Walter Ibarra, would go on to score the first run of the game on an error by the Rays shortstop Hak-Ju Lee. Catcher Bobby Wilson would bring in two more on a single to left to be all the offense for the Yankees.

Ivan Nova started today’s game and pitched four scoreless innings with some assistance. Catcher Francisco Cervelli is competing for the starting job of opening day and if defense wins it, Cervelli made a great impression. In the 1st inning, Cervelli backed up Nunez’s throwing error by throwing out the runner stealing 2nd base. Then, with runners on the corners and one out, Cervelli threw out the runner stealing 2nd base and helped Nova out of his jam.

The 22-year-old was one of the key acquisitions in an offseason trade that sent pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to the Kansas City Royals. Myers hit a combined .314 with 37 homers and 109 RBI in 134 games with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha last season.

The Rays also invited first baseman-outfielder Leslie Anderson, infielder Cole Figueroa, right-handed pitchers Matt Nevarez and Jim Paduch and left-handed relievers Jim Patterson and Neil Schenk to big league camp. Pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 12.

Rule 5 Draft Outlook

The Rule 5 draft is tomorrow. Today I wanted to look at a few Reds guys who have a chance of being selected and a who the Reds may select.
The Reds
Let’s start with the arms. Justin Freeman throws in the low 90’s with a good slider. He is coming off of a season in AA Pensacola where he posted a 2.91 ERA with 16 walks and 68 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. Freeman isn’t a guy who will wow the scouts, but at some point results matter and he has had them for his entire career and his stuff is of Major League quality. Tim Crabbe is another guy who throws in the low 90’s with his fastball and he throws a good change up and mixes in a slider/cutter as well. He struggled in AA with the Blue Wahoos, but was very strong in the second half with the Blaze. He showed much better control in the second half. A team could be interested in his as a reliever where he could focus on his fastball/change up. Mark Serrano, like the others, has a low 90’s fastball to work with and he mixes in an above-...
