MLB Game Picks - Saturday: May 18, 2013

Ten correct picks out of fifteen is nothing to sneeze at. But I still have to laugh at picking the Marlins to win. Heh. What a dope. The logic behind that pick was that the Marlins--as bad as they are--are still going to win 50 games this season. So you have to pick them once in a while. Yesterday was not that day.

A lot of the correct picks were sort of lucky. The Astros coughed up their game to the Pirates with two errors in the ninth and a collision in the outfield that allowed the winning run to score. The Red Sox, Indians and Nationals all won in extra innings. But hey, they all count against you when they go wrong, so I will take them all.

It is time to look at Saturday baseball, which features six day games. There should be something for everybody today. The picks:

The Cubs over the Mets: Scott Feldman has been grooving and as long as he keeps grooving and not grooving fastballs in the zone, he should win today over Jeremy Hefner, who is not having a good season. Da...

Even in winning, Chicago's most recent contest was a microcosm of the young season, as its struggling offense continues to have a difficult time providing run support for a solid pitching staff.
Hector Santiago may be the newest member of the starting rotation, but even he isn't immune to that fact.
Chicago begins a seven-game road trip as Santiago faces former White Sox pitching prospect Pedro Hernandez and the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.
Chris Sale took a perfect game into the seventh inning and finished with a one-hitter in Sunday's 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, though Chicago also failed to score through six innings.
Alexei Ramirez went 3 for 4 and hit a two-run single as the White Sox (15-20) scored all their runs in the seventh to avoid a three-game sweep.
Chicago hasn't scored more than seven runs in a game, has the fewest hits (265) and worst on-base percentage (.280) in the majors and ranks last in the AL in batting average (.227) and runs (120).

Stacking the Odds: Week 7 Two-Start SP

You guys and gals know the drill. These are pitchers who are widely available in fantasy leagues who have two-starts next week. This is a strategy you can employ every week with 1 or 2 of your pitching roster spots to give you a definite edge in strikeouts and wins, and hopefully lower your ratios.American LeagueHector Santiago, SP, CHW – @MIN (Hernandez), @LAA (Blanton)I recommended Santiago as a spot starter in deep leagues last week against the Mets. He rewarded those with 7 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 8K/2 BB although he took the tough 1-0 loss. In his last two starts, he now has 14 K in 12.1 IP, and he’s only given up 1 ER.He continues to get about one strikeout per inning (8.44 K/9), and the two road starts against struggling offenses this week are in favorable pitcher parks. Six of his nine starts have been on the road this year so he should be getting comfortable away from home.A.J.
White Sox P Hector Santiago forgets he has to bat (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Hector Santiago got so wrapped up in his dominant performance against the New York Mets on Tuesday night that he forgot to bat. Interleague play can be tricky for American League pitchers. For the majority of the season, they don’t even have to think about swinging a bat. Despite the fact that his team was playing in a National League ballpark on Tuesday, Santiago chose to continue not thinking about it.
As you can see, the game was delayed in the top of the sixth inning when someone had to go into the clubhouse and tell Santiago it was his turn to hit. The left-hander was in the midst of a full-fledged pitchers’ duel at the time. He gave up only four hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work, but New York went on to win 1-0 in the 10th inning as Mets pitcher Matt Harvey threw nine innings of one-hit ball and took a perfect game into the eighth.
To make matters worse, Santiago is a native of North Jerse...

White Sox Pitcher Hector Santiago Forgets His Turn To Bat

Hector Santiago pitched so well last night that the Mets' Matt Harvey didn't even get the win even though he took a perfect game into the seventh inning. But when he was due to hit with two outs in the sixth, Santiago was nowhere to be found. Stupid interleague play.
A native of North Jersey, Sanitago had about 100 friends and family members on-hand to watch him pitch against the team he grew up rooting for. They had been thrilled by his performance. Just look at how he holds up the game and rushes onto the field without batting gloves or warmup swings. He eventually struck out.

White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago forgets to bat against Mets

Oh yeah ... I'm up.

That is what must have been running through Chicago White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago's head when a few of his teammates rousted him from the locker room Tuesday night. During the sixth inning of last night's game against the New York Mets, Santiago disappeared from the dugout when it was turn to bat and had to be rushed to the plate.

Maybe he was just hiding from Mets ace Matt Harvey who was dominating the Sox lineup.

It's easy to forgive Santiago for his brain freeze since he is an AL pitcher and he was playing in Citi Field — an NL park. He's not used to batting. But don't tell that to jeering and booing Mets fans who thought the Sox starter was trying freeze out Harvey — who was in the midst of six innings of perfection during a 0-0 game.

Santiago scrambled to get his bat and helmet and apologized to the waiting ump.

Video: Hector Santiago forgets he has to bat against Mets

Your browser does not support iframes.Let's face it. American League pitchers aren't used to having to bat.Such was the case for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Hector Santiago against the Mets on Tuesday. Despite the fact that Santiago already went to the plate once in the game, the 25-year-old completely forgot that he had to bat again in the sixth inning. Seriously, when Santiago's spot came up in the order, the southpaw was nowhere to be found. Eventually, Santiago emerges from the dugout with a helmet on and a bat in hand to take his turn at the dish. As you can see, he wasted no time in getting his first cut on, fouling off the very first pitch. Unfortunately, he ends up being another Matt Harvey strikeout victim a few pitches later. It's kind of hard to blame Santiago for the mental lapse, though. The White Sox mustered only one base runner all game long in the 10-inning loss. Thus, Santiago's spot in the order didn't come around very much.

White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago forgets to bat against Mets (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Hector Santiago is not used to hitting, as he plays for an American League team. That would probably explain why Santiago was nowhere to be found when his at-bat came up with two outs in the top of the sixth inning during Tuesday night's game at Citi Field.

The game was briefly delayed as Santiago was in the locker room and had to be reminded by teammates that it was his turn to bat. Santiago could be seen scrambling for a helmet and a bat, and was understandably jeered by Mets fans as he came up to face pitcher Matt Harvey. Santiago struck out looking to end the inning.

Santiago did pitch seven shutout innings against the Mets, but didn't get the win as the White Sox were shut out and lost the game 1-0 in 10 innings.

Hector Santiago allowed two in five-plus innings filling in for Jake Peavy on Thursday night, Tyler Flowers hit a three-run homer and the Chicago White Sox beat Texas 3-1, handing the Rangers their first series loss of the season.

Flowers' drive just inside the foul pole in left field was the third straight hit after Texas right-hander Justin Grimm (2-1) retired 10 in a row on the day he was named AL rookie of the month.

Adrian Beltre's homer in the second was the only hit through five innings against Santiago (1-1), who had six strikeouts and two walks in 5 1-3 innings. The left-hander made his first start of the season and fifth of his career after Peavy was scratched because of back spasms.

Addison Reed pitched around two of Chicago's eight walks, striking out the side in the ninth for his 10th save and second in two nights.

The coldest May game at Rangers Ballpark came just three weeks after the coldest day game there - and the Rangers lost both.

Q&A: Hector Santiago, Screwball Artist

Hector Santiago reads FanGraphs and throws a screwball. The former puts the Chicago White Sox southpaw in the minority among big-league players. The latter makes him quite unique.
A handful of present-day hurlers pull the occasional screwball out of their back pocket, but none feature the pitch. Santiago doesn’t either, but if he wins a job in the starting rotation next season — a distinct possibility — there is a good chance it will become his signature offering.
The 24-year-old New Jersey native worked out of the bullpen in 42 of his 46 appearances this year, which impacted his repertoire. As he explained during a visit to Fenway Park, “It‘s tough to come in for one inning and throw screwballs. As a starter, you have more opportunities to throw it.”
Santiago wants to start, and knows what he needs to do to earn that role. Along with reintroducing more screwballs to his mix, he said he needs to “work on a two-seam fastball, something that is going to sink down out of the zone, so I...

Hector Santiago Coverage, Featuring Hector Santiago
The Puerto Rican League is approximately a week old, and, as the (very premature) leaderboards below reveal, White Sox left-hander Hector Santiago has been quite effective in his first two appearances (both starts), posting a 13:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 11.0 innings.
Despite some difficulties at the beginning — difficulties which got him removed from the closer role rather early on — Santiago’s 2012 season was entirely adequate (70.1 IP, 106 xFIP-). Notably, he made four starts in September and October, with surprisingly proficient results. To wit: 19.1 IP, 26 K, 11 BB, 55.8 GB%, 3.41 xFIP.
