Baltimore Orioles Top 15 Prospects (2012-13)

The Orioles list is strong at the top but begins to taper off quickly after the Top 4 players. The system boasts a fair bit of up-the-middle position talent (especially in the outfield) and strong pitching. There were another three or four prospects that could have easily slide into the 11-15 range and just narrowly missed the list.

There’s not much to be said about Bundy that hasn’t already been written about a hundred times. Just 19 in 2012, he carved through the minors and reached the majors in his first full pro season. Bundy possesses mid-to-high-90s velocity on his fastball and he also features a plus changeup and a curveball that shows plus potential. He also has a cutter that he hasn’t thrown much as a pro.
I asked a scout familiar with Bundy about the other aspects of the young phenom’s game. “His mechanics are clean and he’s a good athlete with very good body control...

O's place Roberts on DL with strained right groin

The Baltimore Orioles placed infielder Brian Roberts on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right groin, retroactive to July 2. The Orioles recalled outfielder Xavier Avery from Triple-A Norfolk to replace him.

Roberts is hitting .182 in 17 games since making his return from a concussion June 12. The oft-injured Roberts had just 163 at-bats last season and 230 at-bats in 2010.

Avery is back with the Orioles for the third time. He's hit .222 in 18 games. Avery made his Major League debut with Baltimore on May 13.

Orioles place Johnson (wrist) on DL

The Orioles placed designated hitter Nick Johnson on the disabled list with a wrist injury and recalled outfielder Xavier Avery. Johnson sprained his right wrist in Wednesday's loss to the Angels after one at-bat. He has undergone multiple surgeries on that wrist. He's batting .207 with four home runs and 11 RBIs this season. Avery was a second-round pick in the 2008 draft. He spent time on the Orioles' roster in May, filling in for Nolan Reimold (neck) and Endy Chavez (intercostal strain) in left field and as the Orioles' lead-off man.

Xavier Avery Has Impressed So Far For The Orioles

When the Orioles drafted Xavier Avery in the second round in 2008, I wasn't terribly excited. "Fast" plus "Raw" usually indicates (hopefully) a 4th outfielder to me, and Avery's minor league numbers - .266/.328/.363 overall - didn't exactly dissuade me from that view. Actually seeing him in Baltimore though, I've been pleasantly surprised and somewhat impressed. Batting Avery in the lead-off spot because of his speed seemed like a poor idea, but - though he's probably not one of the team's better hitters - he's at least showed a nice approach there. Beyond walking at an above average 10% of his plate appearances, Avery has shown a relatively patient approach and a decent level of pitch recognition. His rate of swinging at pitches outside the strike-zone is better than league average - it was outstanding (~18%, I believe), but regressed somewhat with the Boston series (now ~26%). In that area, the questions are (1) is...

Despite Jeffrey Maier II, O’s hold on to split with Yanks

What is it with those scumbag Yankee fans always getting carte blanche to interfere with baseball games?
We O’s fans hardly need to hear the first three syllables of the name “Jeffrey Maier” before going into involuntary dry heaves.
Then there was THIS guy during the playoffs last year.

In Tuesday night’s O’s-Yanks contest, another Yanks fan pulled in what should have been an out and made it a home run. At the time, B’More was clinging to a 4-0 lead, and starter Wei-Yin Chen (4-0, 2.45 ERA) was working on a shutout with two outs in the top of the seventh. Curtis Granderson hit a long fly ball to the left field wall, where rookie Xavier Avery appeared to have a bead on it.
Instead, this:

And just like that, the Yanks were back in the game at 4-2. And just like in those previous instances, the umpires were completely silent.
Luckily, Chen would record the final out in the seventh with no more damage done, and the reliable eighth-ninth inning combination of Pedro Strop and Jim Johnson closed out Ne

2012 Fantasy Baseball Lineup Planner – Week 7

Here is a look at the latest news and notes from around major league baseball to help you set your fantasy baseball lineup for week 7 (May 14 – May 20) of the 2012 fantasy baseball season.
American League:
7 games: all teams

Hitters:
Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings sat out his sixth consecutive game with an injured knee and there is still no timetable for his return although it does not sound he will need a trip to the disabled list. Unless some new breaks early Monday morning, it is best to reserve him for next week if you have other alternatives.
The Baltimore Orioles promoted outfielder Xavier Avery from Triple-A where he was hitting .273 with five home runs, 16 RBI and eight stolen bases. With Nolan Reimold and Endy Chavez both out of action, Avery should get at bats next week if you need a player in an AL-only format. Avery led off for the Orioles on Sunday and went 0-for-4 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Oakland Athletics placed Yoenis Cespedes on the disabled l...

Orioles select contract of outfielder Xavier Avery; Option RHP Stu Pomeranz to Triple-A Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have selected the contract of OF XAVIER AVERY and optioned RHP STU POMERANZ to Triple-A Norfolk.
Avery, 22, batted .273/.373/.469 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 33 games for the Tides. He hit safely in eight of his last nine games, including multi-hit games in each of his last four. Avery will wear uniform number 13.

Orioles Defeat Braves, Jai Miller and Opening Day

This afternoon, the Orioles defeated the Atlanta Braves, 2-1, in Grapefruit League action. Jai Miller and Xavier Avery drove in runs late in the game after trailing 1-0; however, the Orioles got another solid pitching performance from the hurlers on the mound. Jason Hammel pitched his first game as Oriole, tossing two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and walked one. Pitchers Kevin Gregg, Darren O’Day, Pedro Strop, Michael Socolovich – who earned the victory - and Troy Patton each pitched a scoreless inning. Zach Phillips gave up a run off an Eric Hinske homer in the seventh inning. Overall, he pitched two innings, and one gave up a hit – the Hinske longball. Atlanta starter Mike Minor pitched three innings of scoreless ball. I’m not sure if Jai Miller may have a role with the team when Opening Day comes around; however, he is making the most his playing time so far. He is 27 and far from a young prospect, but is an intriguing player. He had two hits in three at-bats, and certainly
