Richard Cloutier: Oilers Want DeKeyser

Word from Hockey God Bob McKenzie just now regarding top NCAA prospect Danny DeKeyser. According to McKenzie, DeKeyser has been approached directly by Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz. DeKeyser is 6' 3", 198lbs and is described as a solid two-way defenseman.

This would be huge for the Oilers if it occurs. Having DeKeyser, Justin Schultz, Jeff Petry and Oscar Klefbom as the Oilers future Top 4 w...

Datsyuk undresses defender, scores

Jeff Petry might want to file sexual harassment charges because Pavel Datsyuk absolutely undressed him. At the 3:39 mark of OT Pavel Datsyuk took pass from Johan Franzen and really did what he does best, making the opposing defense look silly to eventually light the lamp giving the Wings a 3-2 win. After being down 2-0 it looked like the Wings were on their way to their 4th straight loss with an offense that continued to have trouble scoring goals. However Valtteri Filppula was finally able to get the Wings on the board with his second goal in as many games since coming back from injury. Then with under 10 minutes remaining Niklas Kronwall was able to tie the game at 2 after the Oilers looked to put it in their own net. Jimmy Howard made 30 saves after sitting out the night with what was being described as flu like symptoms. Total shots on goal were 32-28 in favor of Detroit.

Pavel Datsyuk scores a “Datsyukian” game-winner

After tying the game with an “own goal,” Jeff Petry wasn’t done letting his team down. In overtime against the Detroit Red Wings, Petry was turned completely inside out by Pavel Datsyuk. After doing so, Datsyuk fired a beautiful shot short-side high blocker past Devan Dubnyk. The “Datsyukian” goal against the Edmonton Oilers broke Datsyuk’s 11 game goalless streak and gave the Red Wings a much needed win. Not to be lost on the play was Johan Franzen’s excellent display of patience, who bought some time in the neutral zone so he could get the puck to the streaking Datsyuk. Datsyuk is truly magical with the puck and if you don’t believe me, just ask Siri.

Datsyuk is Russian for filth

Jeff Petry scores on his own team against Detroit Red Wings

Late in the third period the Edmonton Oilers were up 2-1 when the Detroit Red Wings went on the powerplay. The Red Wings had been struggling to get scoring chances all night, but after Niklas Kronwall fired a shot on net the rebound kicked right out to Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry. Petry, like many defenseman before him, wanted desperately to clear the puck out of the zone but unfortunately for him he fired it right past Devan Dubnyk. The goal tied the game and things only got worse for Jeff Petry when they were in overtime. Pavel Datsyuk turned him inside out late in the overtime and then buried the game winner. Jeff Petry should be the star of the next Southwest Airlines commercial after his third period and overtime play; wanna get away?

The Edmonton Oilers re-signed restricted free-agent goalie Devan Dubnyk and defenseman Jeff Petry to two-year deals Thursday, and agreed to a one-year deal with left winger Dane Byers.

Dubnyk won 20 games in 47 appearances for the Oilers last season. The 6-foot-5 goalie had a 2.67 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

Petry had two goals and 23 assists in 73 games for Edmonton last season.

Question: The Defense...how bad is it? When we speak about "fixing the D" what are we actually saying?

Answer: Ladislav Smid, Jeff Petry and Nick Schultz are all good enough to be here....

One More Defenceman Isn’t a Solution

The summer to do list of the Edmonton Oilers must look a little something like this:

1.	Improve defence
2.	???
3.	Playoffs

Through the 2011-12 season the Oilers faced a number of challenges, most of those stemmed from a weak defensive core. Especially with Ryan Whitney lost somewhat long term to a nagging ankle injury, and then a knee injury and then an ankle injury again, the Oilers were forced to quicken the development of young and rookie defencemen like Jeff Petry and Theo Peckham. Going into the next season however, the Oilers will have a few choices.

It helps when your defense bothers to show up. At least two of the goals against the Oilers on Saturday were caused by brutal plays by Jeff Petry in the defensive zone. As bad as Petry played, there is plenty of humble pie to go around. The Oilers D looked scrambled and uncertain for most of the game. Have I mentioned yet ho...

His Bite Is Worse than His Barker

When Steve Tambellini signed Cam Barker this summer, we knew what the Oilers were getting based on resume. His recent injury then should be considered a stroke of good luck? In the July 2nd post I linked to above, this was the main issue:Did he ever--at any time--play tough minutes in the NHL? No. He didn't in Minnesota and in Chicago they always had a better option. Whatever Barker's value--real or imagined, it doesn't appear in the secondary disciplines (that I can find). So it set up an interesting situation for Oiler fans. Would coach Tom Renney use Barker as a 5-6D option against the NHL's competition, or would he run him like a high profile $2.25M free agent?According to Gabe Desjardins behind the net, Barker ranks 8 out of the 9 Oiler defensemen in terms of Qual Comp. Now, these things can sway here and there, but it does establish that coach Renney did not consider Barker a better option than Whitney, Gilbert or Smid. Or Potter. And Petry too when he was reca...
