Steelers Players Undergoing Stress Tests In 2013

Injuries really have taken their toll on the Pittsburgh Steelers over the course of the last two seasons, and team president Art Rooney II has taken notice of it.

“It does happen sort of in cycles, and hopefully we’re getting through this cycle," said Rooney back in January. "But having said that I don’t think we can just sit here and believe we’ll come to the end of the cycle. We have to look at everything we’re doing, and we will look at everything we’re doing, from the training and conditioning side of things, from a practice side of things and see if there are things we can do Read more [...]

Dr. Butch wins Art Rooney Pace

Dr. Butch won the $355,000 Art Rooney Pace on Saturday night at Yonkers Raceway.

Driven by George Brennan, the 3-year-old son of Art Major paced the mile in 1:51:2 and paid $6.90 to win the race honoring the late owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Rooney family has owned Yonkers Raceway since 1972.

Lonewolf Currier was second, and Sir Cary's Z Tam finished third.

Dr. Butch, owned by Ken Jacobs and trained by Linda Toscano, finished third last week in the Rooney elimination in his only other start of the year.

The Age Old Steelers Mount Rushmore Discussion

Pro Football Talk is doing a 32-part series this month that features a Mount Rushmore for each of the NFL teams. This question has been beat to death over the years, but in the case of the Pittsburgh Steelers, it always produces great discussion as there are so many members of the organization that one could argue as a candidate to be one of the four faces of the franchise.

I think that everyone would agree that Art Rooney Sr. has to be one of the four faces on a Steelers Mount Rushmore. If you disagree, make your argument for leaving him off below.

Once you get past "The Chief, however, Read more [...]

Flat Salary Cap In 2015 As Well? Art Rooney II Seems To Think So

We already know to expect a flat salary cap in 2014, but opinions seem to be mixed about what it will be in 2015 when the new television deal money starts kicking in. Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II seems to think the next few years that the salary cap will not increase very much when he talked to the Pittsburgh media about the tough decisions the team has had to make recently that led to the release of linebacker James Harrison and guard Willie Colon.

"Every year you have to make decisions like that. You obviously have to look ahead to what the implications are going to be in years Read more [...]

Bad Luck Or Bad Conditioning? Art Rooney II Says He Will Look Into It As It Relates To Injuries

Some new quotes have emerged from the year-end talk that Pittsburgh Steelers team president Art Rooney II had with members of the Pittsburgh media last week concerning injuries suffered this past season and training.

“I do think it’s something that comes in cycles,” said Rooney about injuries, per the Steelers official website. “I remember sitting there a few years ago and looking at the Colts, who had like 15 guys on injured reserve, and I was thinking, ‘I’m glad that’s not us.’

“It does happen sort of in cycles, and hopefully we’re getting through this cycle. But having Read more [...]

‘He Should Be Here’, Says Art Rooney II – What Were Those Four Words Worth?

Any time that Pittsburgh Steelers Team President Art Rooney II talks, it is usually news worthy. Rooney II, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, said Wednesday in regard to restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace, "He should be here."

When NFL Total Access reported those four words Wednesday evening on their broadcast, they said take them for what they are worth. What were they worth? What message was Rooney II trying to send with those four words, and exactly what context were they used in? He obviously knew the statement would make news, but without additional Read more [...]

Happy Friday everyone. Time to post something a little on the lighter side as we head off into the final weekend before the draft.

The ever entertaining Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor is at again today as he is attempting to get Art Rooney II to join Twitter. Taylor posted in a tweet today, "Bout to see if I can start MR. ART ROONEY a TWITTA page Might need y'all HELP NO foe an answer is not an OPTION WORD". Does it get any better than that?
Steelers unveil unsightly throwback uniforms

Check out the video.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be celebrating their 80th season, so the team unveiled their throwback 1934 uniforms — and they look absolutely hideous.
Fortunately, the black-and-gold striped jerseys will be worn for just two games in 2012.
"We wanted to go back ... and recall some of the early days of the franchise," Steelers’ President Art Rooney II said. “Back in the early 1990's we wore the 1933 jersey for our throwback game, so we thought the 1934 jersey would be something different and would help us recall the early days of pro football."

Art Rooney II Answers To Charges Of Being A Meddlesome Owner

Ever since it was announced that Bruce Arians had retired as the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, team president Art Rooney II has been accused of being a meddlesome owner as it relates to not letting head coach Mike Tomlin make his own decisions in regards to his own coaching staff.. Although the Arians exit was termed a retirement in a statement by Tomlin, Arians was hired as the Indianapolis Colts new offensive coordinator just a short time thereafter. That led many to think that Rooney II put his foot down about Arians returning. Tomlin had said in his final press conference of the Read more [...]

The Rooney-Mara connection

With the New York Giants in the Super Bowl this year, there will undoubtedly be some speculation regarding whether or not the Rooney family, majority owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be rooting for them against the New England Patriots or not. The reason: The Rooneys and Maras have a connection that is steeped in family connectedness.

The relationship between Art Rooney "The Chief" and Tim Mara goes as far back as the late 1920s and early 1930s, and it didn't necessarily relate to football, although both men were creating franchises that would go on to produce World Championship teams.

Labriola made sure to hit on the recent departure of offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, and while Rooney seemed to dance around the question at first, he then seemed comfortable pinning the reasoning on the Arians on again, off again retirement talk. He did however state how they were looking to improve the offense. Read more [...]

Tomlin Wants Continuity and Rooney Wants Change, Who Wins?

Coach Tomlin has come out repeatedly and made known he likes continuity in his unit. That got shook up last week when the Steelers did not renew the contract of Bruce Arians. Art Rooney II was ready for a change and made the decision. Even after Tomlin came out and said he wanted Arians back in 2012. Tomlin lost the first round of this fight. Who will win Round 2?
Rooney is the big boss and he was ready for a change. He wants the more “blue collar” type of offense that the Steelers used to have. He has been calling for it for years. It is starting to come to a head with the removal of Arians. Even though it was an unpopular decision with his coach and his quarterback.
To do this Rooney is most likely going to have to look outside the organization to find his candidate. There are blue collar run the ball guys out in the league ready to go. If he wants to go that old school he could bring in Tom Cable who is the offensive line coach right now for Seattle. Todd Haley runs t...

Bruce Arians was “Retired” Because Rooney is Stuck in the Past

Bruce Arians was forced to retire last week as his contract was not going to be renewed by the Steelers. The decision came from above. Art Rooney II did not want Arians on the staff and told Arians he would not be resigned with the team. After yesterday’s report from ESPN it looks like Arians was “retired” for the wrong reasons.
Rooney wants the team to go back to the way things were. He wants to be a dominantly running team. He has been calling for it for the past couple of years. He wants 3 yards and cloud of dust. Lets hold the ball and play defense type ot team. This is shocking.
The NFL does not work this way anymore. Even if you play defense the game is about throwing the ball. Going backwards in time is not the right idea. This is not 1990. Teams do not play that game anymore. The teams in the Super Bowl are the teams that pass. We were one of those teams who threw the ball to get there. The Ravens never make it because they can not score enough even if they pl...
