Buccaneers release Okoye; DT could join Bears Friday

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released former starting safety Cody Grimm and defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, who had four sacks for the Bears last season and could be a candidate to rejoin the Bears as soon as Friday. Grimm was a seventh-round pick from Virginia Tech in 2010. He became a starter as a rookie when Tanard Jackson was suspended by the NFL. He played well before a season-ending leg injury. Grimm entered 2011 as a starter but again wound up on injured reserve after an in-game collision with linebacker Geno Hayes. Okoye, a first-round pick at the age of 19, spent four seasons with the Texans before signing with the Bears last season. He joined the Bengals as a free agent in April. Other players released by the Buccaneers included linebacker Rennie Curran, safety Keith Tandy, defensive tackle Frank Okam, safety Larry Asante and running back Mossis Madu.

Frank Okam, Larry Asante Among Early Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Cuts

Cuts aren't due into the league office until 9 PM on Friday, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't wasting any time letting go of some of their players.

And those players aren't shy about posting their release on Twitter.

Late Thursday night, defensive tackle Frank Okam and running back Mossis Madu each posted tweets suggesting that they were indeed released by the Bucs. Of course nothing is official until Tampa Bay releases a statement but both players are as good as gone.

Also, safety Larry Asante appears to be another casualty, as first reported by Rotoworld.com.

With those three players gone, the Bucs need to cut 19 more players before the deadline.

Be sure to check out other great articles at Sports Media 101.

Buccaneers 101 Breakdown: Defense Vs. Miami Dolphins

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off the Greg Schiano era with a dominant 20-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins in their preseason opener on Friday night.

Buccaneers101.com has gone back over the game and here are some of the highlights from the defense:

	Defensive Line:
They showed some quickness and ability to attack, but the pass rush still isn't there. Tampa Bay had a league-worst 23 sacks last season and there weren't many things pointing to an improvement against Miami.

Defensive end Adrian Clayborn was solid against the run and put a big hit on a Miami tailback in the first half. Backup defensive tackle Amobe Okoye showed great awareness by tipping a Matt Moore pass in the first half that lead to an interception by linebacker Lavonte David.

However, the D-line committed too many penalties and needs to work on not jumping offsides on hard snap counts.

	Linebackers:
There were still a few missed tackles, but this group looked much improved from last season. M...

Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Mark Barron, Grade A

I love everything about this for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yes, Morris Claiborne is a better prospect than Mark Barron. And yes, cornerback is a more glaring need. However, strong safety is a significant issue as well (he’ll replace Larry Asante) and they picked up extra picks in the process.
This is a slight reach for Barron, which is why I give it an A rather than A+, but if they traded down much further he may not have gotten past the Bills at No. 10. Barron will start from day one, and immediately be one of the few impact players on the Bucs defense.

Draft Needs: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Matt Peterson tracks the offseason needs of every team in the league. Today’s franchise, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers [full archive here].
Season Recap: The Bucs were expected to be a very competitive team in 2011, but failed to meet expectations. Head Coach Raheem Morris was fired after a 4-12 finish, and former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano was brought in to take over the underachieving team. Tampa Bay spent big in free agency bringing in Carl Nicks and Vincent Jackson. The “offseason winner” doesn’t translate to wins, but the Bucs will be improved and should finish with more victories in 2012.
Team Needs:
1. Linebacker: Mason Foster played well during his rookie year and has one of the positions locked down. Questions remain at the outside positions. Luke Kuechly is one of the best defensive players in this draft and could be a surprise selection for the Buccaneers at pick #5.
2. Safety: Talented, but often troubled, free safety Tanard Jackson was released this offseason, leaving Cody G...

Buccaneers CB Aqib Talib Out, DT Albert Haynesworth Questionable For Sunday

Buccaneers CB Aqib Talib has been ruled out and backup S Larry Asante, who has been getting a but of playing time in rotations, is doubtful, while DT Albert Haynesworth is also questionable. Missing Aqib Talib would normally be a big blow for the Bucs, but the Jacksonville Jaguars don't have the quality wideout talent to really make this a problem. Haynesworth presence usually gives the Bucs some disruption inside, and if he can't go they would have no one who could really fill that role, although Haynesworth hasn't made a big impact himself.
December presents: The Real Tampa Bay Buccaneers

November can be puzzling, October has gotten quite pink if you ask me. September tends to be a little hard to grasp, and we all know August is just plain, well, fake. But December football, thats what its all there for, thats what everyone plays for whose worth playing. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that their young players (Ok, the really really young players) are going to get their shot Sunday, and probably the rest of the year, to show what they can do. Mossis Madu is going to have a chance to show he is better than Kregg Lumpkin. (No need for jokes here, the joke has been on us all season long)In the secondary, were going to see more of Gaitor and Black, to see if these young DBs have 'the stuff' it takes to make it in the NFL, and will provide tape for the Bucs for 2012, and for themselves to learn from in the offseason. Most have called it an excuse, and it probably is, but I belive last year's offseason was what caused the Bucs to be such a good team. They didnt have that this yea
