2013 NFL Draft Team Needs: Cincinnati Bengals

1. Safety: Taylor Mays shouldn't be starting, and Clements and Crocker are still both free agents. Cincinnati needs to bring in at least one safety early in the draft. They will probably take one with their first round pick or the early second round pick they have from Oakland.

2. Right Tackle: It doesn't look like the Bengals are interested in bringing back Smith despite all of their cap room. That said, they will probably look to replace him in the first two rounds of the draft, mostly likely the second round. If they valued the position enough to use a first round pick on it, they probably would have just brought back Smith.

3. Running Back: The Law Firm is a decent back, but he needs to be paired with someone to be as effective as he can be. There will probably be a nice group of backs available in the third and fourth rounds for Cincinnati to choose from.

4. Linebacker: Cincinnati needs someone to replace Lawson, who signed with Buffalo. They will ...

Bengals FS Taylor Mays Fined $21,000 For Hit On Ravens TE Ed Dickson

Bengals safety Taylor Mays was fined $21,000 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Ravens tight end Ed Dickson, according to a league spokesman.
Dickson was upended Monday night by Mays, who launched himself into the air during the first half of the Ravens' 44-13 victory over the Bengals.
Dickson said afterward he didn't think Mays was trying to injure him, but predicted he would be fined.
Meanwhile, Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb wasn't fined by the NFL for his hit on Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton. Although he was penalized with a personal foul, Webb led with his shoulder. Source: Baltimore Sun Attached Thumbnails

Taylor Mays enjoying all aspects of 2012 Bengals OTAs and minicamp

If one were to ever get a candid answer out of defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer about Taylor Mays, you'd probably find out the the ol' ball coach loves the young safety. If you remember, stories circulated about Zimmer standing on the table for the team trade up in the second round to grab Mays in the 2010 draft. When they missed out on him, Zimmer made sure that Bengals management lunged at what seemed like a more than fair trade for the former USC Trojan last offseason.

By now, we all know the book on Mays: extremely athletic and naturally gifted, but still has yet to grasp the mental aspect of the game. Mays is currently slotted as the team's starting strong safety, but Zimmer recently told the media that no one really has a clear cut edge on the competition. It's this competition that has Mays particularly fired up about things, especially with the work he's able to get in this offseason.

Paul Dehner, Jr., of CBSSports relays that Mays is enjoying thi...

Look Where Taylor Mays Has Found A Starting Spot

In the 2010 NFL Draft, one of the biggest boom-or-bust prospects in the entire draft was USC Safety Taylor Mays. His 4.3 40 yard dash time initially raised his stock tremendously and had some prognosticators slotting him to his former coach Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks at pick #14. The Seahawks instead took S Earl Thomas from Texas as Mays fell for a number of reasons to the 49ers in the second round with pick #49. Mays fell, despite his impressive athleticism, for the lack of a true position for him as well as a rather low football-IQ.

Jim Harbaugh, who joined the 49ers last offseason, had the same concerns as he inherited a roster with Mays on it. Mays started five games for the 49ers and also contributed on special teams but failed to stand out and solidify a starting spot; in fact, he was slated as the third-string safety during camp last August. It was reported last August that the 49ers sent a mass e-mail to the entire league detailing their intent to trade Ta...

Bengals starting Taylor Mays at safety in OTAs

Once viewed as an elite prospect, Taylor Mays fell to the 2nd round in 2010, where he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. Many felt the 49ers got a steal with him there, but he turned out to be the exact opposite of a steal for them. Mike Singletary, his biggest backer, was fired after Mays’ rookie year. Jim Harbaugh came in, decided he didn’t like Mays and shipped him to Cincinnati for a pack of peanuts. In his first year in Cincinnati, Mays played just 61 snaps.
Heading into his 3rd year in the league, Taylor Mays seems to be getting his first chance at a starting job. He’s working out with the 1st team in OTAs after the Bengals cut long-time starter Chris Crocker this offseason. He will have to hold off two other inexperienced players, Jeromy Miles and Robert Sands, as well as 5th round rookie George Iloka, for the job. Mays has the inside track right now. He’s a perfect fit for Mike Zimmer’s system, which has had success with similar players like Roy Williams in the past, bo...

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Taylor Mays with the 49th overall pick three April’s ago. They dumped him for a 2013 seventh-round pick last August. Mays is now in position to start for the Cincinnati Bengals.
5 NFL Players That Will Breakout In 2012

With every year comes a group of new rookies. A guy like Cam Newton detonates on contact.
Some performers like Cam’s Panthers back-up Jimmy Clausen fairly or unfairly falls short of their inclusion in broadcast conversations that were repeated daily for months straight after the previous NFL season ended.
Then you have the third group that becomes top-shelf talent after spending a year or two of giving their blood, sweat and tears to the game.
Here are five of these guys that we feel will do it big in 2012.

Bengals FS Taylor Mays To Earn More Playing Time In 2012?

The progress of Bengals S Taylor Mays bears watching as he enters his third NFL season, the way Pro Fooball Weekly hears it.
