Stars sign defenseman Connauton to 3-year deal

The Dallas Stars have signed minor league defenseman Kevin Connauton to a three-year contract that could be worth as much as $2 million.

Dallas acquired the 23-year-old Connauton from Vancouver in an April trade that sent Derek Roy to the Canucks.

The first year of the contract announced Thursday is a two-way deal, meaning Connauton will make $100,000 if he plays in the minors and $600,000 if he is in the NHL. The final two years are guaranteed, $650,000 for the 2014-15 season and $800,000 for 2015-16.

Connauton played in 69 games for Chicago and Texas of the AHL last season, and had nine goals, 22 assists and 73 penalty minutes. He played in the AHL All-Star game and registered the hardest shot in a skills competition.

Admirals shutout and lose Game 3

The Milwaukee Admirals find themselves facing elimination Friday after a 2-0 loss to the Texas Stars Wednesday night. Recently reassigned by the big brother club Dallas Stars, Alex Chiasson scored the game winner 7:42 in the third off a redirection in front.

With 6:03 remaining, Kevin Connauton put the icing on the cake to score his second goal of the series on the power play.

Texas now leads the series 2-1 in a best-of-five with the two remaining games in Cedar Park.

Despite receiving six players from the Nashville Predators, the Admirals’ NHL affiliate, Milwaukee was unable to muster up a goal, and more importantly, a win. Chris Mueller, Kevin Henderson and Taylor Beck received minors, with Henderson’s roughing minor allow Connauton to score the second Stars’ goal.

Magnus Hellberg stood tall once more for his teammates, though they were unable to help him out. Hellberg stopped 29 of 31 shots. Chiasson’s goal snapped his scoreless streak at 107:42.

AHL, CHL report and the Week Ahead 4/8-4/14

Texas Stars

A revamped Texas team had a rather pedestrian week, going 1-2-0 in a three games in three nights set over the weekend. The losses proved to be inconsequential this past week though as the Stars officially clinched a playoff spot and are still holding strong as the number one seed in the Western Conference.

The Stars had a bunch of new, or returning, faces on the team this past week as a result of the trade deadline. Kevin Connauton had his debut with the team and registered a couple of assists on Sunday. Brett Ritchie also had goal and an assist during the week.

It was mostly a quiet week on the offensive end though, with Mike Hedden leading the way with four points. Reilly Smith, Travis Morin and Colton Sceviour had three apiece.

Jack Campbell had two of the three starts, going 1-1-0, and stopped 46 of 50 shots. His starts might be cut back a bit during these final two weeks to get him some rest before the playoffs. He’s been the main man since February,...

Kevin Connauton for Derek Roy trade analysis

Relatively speaking, Kevin Connauton is not a big name in the, “anyone can be traded,” circle, but there’s certainly no questioning his departure is significant for the Vancouver Canucks depth chart.

Mike Gillis: Canucks wheeler and dealer

NWSB Insider and Vancouver Canucks blogger Josh Hall tells us today the Nucks made a series of move to help with the playoff stretch. Derek Roy is a Vancouver Canuck and should provide some flexibility down the middle but I don’t buy the whole Ryan Kesler on the wing idea. Josh says if you’re asking...

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired center Derek Roy from the Dallas Stars to add some much-needed depth at forward.

The Canucks sent defenseman Kevin Connauton and a second-round pick to Dallas. The team confirmed the trade on its website Tuesday.

Vancouver needs scoring with its second line hit hard by injuries. Mason Raymond recently joined Ryan Kesler and David Booth on the injured list with a sore shoulder.

Roy has four goals and 18 assists in 30 games with Dallas this season. He previously spent eight seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, scoring 161 goals with 266 assists in 549 games.

The Ottawa native will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Report: Derek Roy Traded to Canucks for Kevin Connauton, Second-Round Pick

The Canucks have made a splash in the NHL trade pool.
According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Vancouver has traded Kevin Connauton and a second-round draft pick for Stars forward Derek Roy.
The longtime Sabre has potted just four goals in his first season in Dallas but has the capability to be a 30-goal scorer, proven by his 32 snipes during the 2007-08 campaign. Roy, 29, scored 17 goals and added 27 assists in 80 games a season ago.
Connauton was Vancouver’s No. 4 prospect in Future Watch, according to The Hockey News’ Brian Costello, which can be seen in his tweet below.

Great reasons I was looking forward to watching 2012 Canucks camp

I missed not having training camp!
Hey everyone, it’s been a while, but what’s a month between blogs, right?
Especially when we’re 18 days into a lockout. But, today I’ve got a little something for you. No, I’m not going to break the news that Gary Bettman was struck by a bus and that at least one of the Fehr brothers was seen dancing on or around his flattened corpse.
My little something is a little more disappointing and something I wish we all didn’t have to write and read about.
But here it is, the five things I was really looking forward to seeing at the Canucks 2012 training camp.
Youth Movement
As the Canucks figurative window to a championship closes, it seems like it’s the perfect time to start bringing in some of the younger players who have been with the organization for a while.
This year there was, for me at least, a level of excitement I haven’t had going into camp in a very long time.
I was looking forward to seeing what young players were going to push for starting jobs, which

Five guys who must make big strides with Canucks in 2012/13

Back To The Future
Good Afternoon, I hope you all had a great weekend, and depending on where you are, you got out and enjoyed some sun and didn’t spend your Saturday in a strip club that was show casing it’s Single A ball club equivalent of “dancers”.
All right, let’s move on.
Today I’m going to showcase five Canucks that I would like to see make some big strides in 2012/13.
Zack Kassian
Out of all five players I’m going to profile, I think Kassian will have the spotlight on him more than anyone. Acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline for Cody “Why did you trade him? He’s the next Trevor Linden” Hodgson.
Some had shunned Zack Kassian before he’d even take a shift as a Canuck.
Kassian fits the mold for the future of hockey in Vancouver, at least under Mike Gillis. He’s big, young and strong and with any luck he’ll score some goals somewhere along the line, too.
After all, Gillis did say this league and team is geared for offense and that’s the direction he aims to

Recent Vancouver Canucks draft picks to watch for in 2012-2013

The Draft Matters
With the 2012 NHL Entry draft going down this week on June 22-23 at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, we thought we’d go back and take a look at some recent Vancouver Canucks draft picks since 2009 to predict who will crack the team’s lineup, and help the squad in its ever growing quest to win a Stanley Cup.
We give you 5 such players – The Young Canuck Prospects for 2012

2011-2012 Season – AHL – Chicago Wolves – 76 Games Played – 21 Goals – 23 Assists – 44 Points
Drafted in the First Round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft with the 22nd Pick
Analysis: The 2009 WCHA Rookie of the Year has impressed with his offensive prowess and speed, and has been working on his size and strength since being drafted.
Considered relatively undersized at 5’8”, he will need some extra offseason muscle to take the punishment that will be dished out playing with the big boys. In a best case scenario, he can pitch in with some timely goals for t
