Star Power: The Importance of Good Management

Mixed Martial Arts is like any other major sport in America. Superstars like Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva draw the attention of millions. Outspoken fighters like Chael Sonnen and Diaz brothers keep us constantly entertained with their personalities and sound bites. And crooked managers continue to use their positioning to force fighters into bad situations or contracts.
From the NFL to Boxing, there are plenty of examples of athletes reporting misuse of their earnings. Vince Young is currently in the process of suing his former management team claiming that lost over $5.5 million of his earnings. In Boxing, Al Haymon was accused of submitting false records for his fighters in order to book fights. Recently another manager has come under scrutiny. WMMA manager Brett Atchley has had several female fighters speak out against him and his conduct recently. Atchley would speak to female fighters and suggest to them that if they didn’t submit to his requests, he would block them f...

Rivalry Between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson Heats Up on Twitter

Who knows when Jon Jones’ (pictured) mangled toe will allow him to return to the Octagon, but it’s getting pretty clear who the reigning UFC light heavyweight king would like to make his next title defense against.
After steamrolling Chael Sonnen at UFC 159, Jones has repeatedly said he’s got his sights set on Alexander Gustafsson.
Why “The Mauler”? Because Jones is sick of critics complaining that he continues to beat up on smaller opponents.
Gustafsson possesses similar weight, height, reach and length as Jones. Gustafsson and his team releasing a Harlem Shake video that featured his friends holding up signs that read ”Jon Jones You Are Next” didn’t help matters, either.
To reinforce the message, Gustafsson took to Twitter Friday morning to let Jones know he was still on his mind.
“Its on @JonnyBones cant wait to get in that cage with YOU!!!” Gustafsson tweeted.
To which Jones promptly responded, “Fighting me is not good for your image @AlexTheMauler FYI.”

Light Heavyweight Champ Jon Jones Wants Two More Fights In 2013

Jon Jones is coming off a nasty toe injury that he suffered in his total destruction of Chael Sonnen at UFC 159. That injury turned out to be less severe than most anticipated and the champ has to be in a boot for six weeks. Once his foot is healed Jones wants to get right back in the Octagon and defend his title for a record sixth time as a light heavyweight. Here is what Jon’s agent, Malki Kawa had to say about the champ to Bleacher Report.
“I’ll just tell you this, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jon fights two more times this year. That’s very aggressive and I know that’s crazy, but it’s something that he discussed with me and we talked about it. I told Superman to relax a little bit, you’re injured right now, but he’s got an aggressive timeline in his head. Certain goals and accomplishments that he wants and we’re looking to get that record. The truth and the fact of the matter is before we can talk any superfight or any move in weight class or anything to that effect, Jon J

UFC Quick Quote: Chael Sonnen no longer interested in fighting Wanderlei Silva

"I'm not looking for it anymore, I don't like to bully guys. I tried to fight him, he doesn't want to fight. I'm not gonna stick a finger in a guy's chest. If a guy says 'no,' I'm not gonna be a jerk about it."
Well, this is unexpected. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight and light heavyweight number one contender Chael Sonnen, who once said he would "do a home invasion" on the "stupid" Wanderlei Silva, has decided he's not going to be the "jerk" who chases around a guy who doesn't want to fight him, according to his recent conversation with Karyn Bryant. The self-proclaimed "American Gangster" issued a challenge to the "Axe Murderer" following his UFC 159 loss to Jon Jones, but has since abandoned his pursuit, despite the fact that Wandy claims he's never been offered the fight (but would gladly accept it). So, what's the hold up? Paging Joe Silva …, http...

Chael Sonnen: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

At UFC 159, Chael Sonnen was unsuccessful in his third attempt at UFC gold. However, unlike his two exciting performances against the greatest fighter in the world in Anderson Silva, Sonnen's fight against Jon Jones was the most lopsided loss of the West Linn native's career. Jones, the highly-regarded 24 year-old Light Heavyweight champ, used his superior size and grappling to dominate and down Sonnen, before finishing him off with vicious ground and pound in the first round. The only damage that Jones sustained was a badly broken toe that he inflicted upon himself, but Sonnen was unable to capitalize on the gruesome injury.

Very few fans or analysts believed that Sonnen would win the belt. Jones entered the title bout as a 9-1 betting favorite. However, few believed that Sonnen would appear so vulnerable and helpless against the champion. After this fight, it is clear that at age 36, Sonnen just does not have it in him anymore. He does not have the skill or youth to ...

Sonnen faces uncertain future

Chael Sonnen proved timing is everything in the UFC on Saturday night.

In fact, a mere 27 seconds was the difference between a "shock the world" moment and what is now a likely retirement for the bombastic fan favorite.

On a weird night that saw unintentional eye pokes put a premature end to two fights in the undercard of UFC 159, undisputed light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones endured a gruesome compound fracture to his left big toe during the frantic first round of the clash with Sonnen.

Whether fueled by adrenaline or motivated by all the pre-fight smack talk delivered by Sonnen in the buildup to the pay-per-view event, Jones, the youngest champion in UFC history, did not show any discomfort from the injury -- and simply focused on taking down his opponent and beating him until the referee called the fight and handed him the victory by technical knockout.

Imagine what could have been, though? UFC president Dana White admitted postfight that had the first round ended, doctors

Jones Knocks Out Sonnen In UFC 159

((HT: UFC))

After, seemingly, a long time that the two fighters just ran their mouth Jon "Bones" Jones and Chael Sonnen finally got it on last night at the main event for UFC 159. And while it wasn't quite the Cheick Kongo knockout, Jones held on to the title with the following display in the eight-sided ring at Prudential Center...

After Jones strategy of closing Sonnen's boxing space and grappled him to the floor, it looked like Jones kept Sonnen pinned down and simply didn't give him the space he's used to operating...

Jones, who broke his foot in the win, is under indefinite medical suspension for a pretty gruesome injury- the big toe went sideways. Jones later tweeted from the hospital, “Yep still at the hospital bone definitely broke through the skin.”

Sonnen wasn't looking at the injury as his way out...

Anderson Silva wants superfight

Oh, that Dana White. The UFC president had his promoter’s cap firmly affixed during Saturday’s UFC 159 post-fight press conference, once again teasing fanboys across the globe with a potential superfight between middleweight king Anderson Silva (pictured) and… Light heavyweight champ Jon Jones or welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, of course. The usual suspects, but this time White claims Silva contacted him immediately after Jones steamrolled Chael Sonnen far worse than the two times Silva beat him. Silva has openly petitioned for a blockbuster bout with St-Pierre just a few months ago, but GSP wants no part of that at this point in time. So, has the 38-year-old finally turned his attention towards Jones? “Anderson called me tonight and wants a fight,” White vague shared. “I’m not going to tell you which fight he wants, but I’m going to get to work on it as soon as possible.” Great… Following the presser, White remained tightlipped about Silva’s future and told a small group of re

Jon Jones needed only four minutes to defeat Chael Sonnen by TKO after trapping him on the ground and unloading a series of elbows and punches that left the challenger bloodied and bruised. It only took him a couple more minutes to discover his big toe was badly broken. Jon Jones, while preparing to be interviewed by Joe Rogan, looked down and saw the toe, the reaction was immediate. He was then placed in a chair where he went forward with the interview like a champion. The toe will likely put Jones on the shelf for a short period of time, and he said it could scrap his vacation plans to Jamaica. The photo isn't pretty, but this is the fight game. Click "Read More" below to see the toe. Jon Jones Suffers Broken Toe Celebrating his victory over Sonnen

UFC 159 Preview: Jon “Bones” Jones vs Chael Sonnen

UFC 159 is finally here. More importantly, it’s finally time for Jon “Bones” Jones and Chael Sonnen to step into the octagon together..
It’s time for Sonnen to back up all his trash talk. It’s time for Jones to make a case for himself that he is the best pound for pound fighter in the world. It’s time for a great fight.
Jones is the overwhelming favorite to win this fight. However, Anderson Silva was also the overwhelming favorite against Sonnen a few years back, but Sonnen dominated the fight for four rounds and was on pace to win the fight, but then Silva put him in a triangle choke and Sonnen tapped out.
Sonnen was so close to pulling off the major upset against Silva, so can he actually do it against Jones?

Before I get into my predictions, here are each fighters highlights.

These two fighters have very different styles. Jones is extremely versatile, and has one of the best standup games in the entire UFC. Sonnen on the other hand, is an old school brawler who likes to take t...

Chael Sonnen is looking to do what no other person has done since 2009, defeat Jon “Bones” Jones in a UFC fight.
Sonnen, 36, will get that chance this Saturday as the headlining fight at UFC 159 with Jones’ light heavyweight world title on the line.
Before the two share the octagon at UFC 159 in Newark, N.J., Sonnen appeared on SportsCenter to promote the fight. In an interview with Sage Steele, the No. 1 contender yelled a lot, flexed too much and at one point says he has, “the arms, the charm and the harm.”
But the crowning moment was when he asked to touch Steele’s curly hair, telling the SportsCenter anchor that he loved it.
Check out the awkward encounter in the video below.
