Andrew Wiggins “Wowing” Kansas Coaches In Workouts

The Andrew Wiggins show has officially arrived in Lawrence, Kansas. Wiggins showed up on Saturday to begin his one year internship under Bill Self, while preparing to take over the NBA next June.
Wiggins got in a couple of workouts with his Kansas teammates, and according to CBSSports.com, Wiggins is wowing Jayhawk coaches, and putting on a show.
Andrew Wiggins arrived at Kansas on Saturday and participated in his first practice Monday. I asked somebody close to the KU program how that practice went.
“Wow!” the source said. “Like watching a video game. He’d be the No. 1 pick this year.”
OK, then.
Wiggins would even be considered the #1 pick today, fresh out of high school, ahead of Nerlens Noel, McLemore, and everybody else in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Wiggins like Harrison Barnes two years ago, will probably be a preseason consensus all american, even before he scores his first basket.

Bill Self Learned Of Andrew Wiggins Commitment To Kansas Via Twitter

Last Tuesday high school hoops phenom Andrew Wiggins shocked the nation when he announced that he was going to attend Kansas over heavy favorites Florida State, and Kentucky.
The normally quiet Wiggins doesn’t conduct himself with much fanfare, so his announcement wasn’t huge or most importantly, nationally televised.
The story of Kansas being able to nab Wiggins is incredible in its own right, but even more crazy is the fact that Kansas head coach Bill Self and his staff didn’t learn of Wiggins choice until Twitter exploded according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
n Huntington, Fulford was coordinating final logistics and making sure no uninvited media had infiltrated the school. Wiggins sat down a few minutes early, looked at his coach and realized there was no point in waiting.
In Lawrence, video coordinator Jeff Forbes popped in the room with the tweet indicating the announcement was only minutes away. Townsend got a call from a Rivals.com reporter who’d received first word and...

Wiggins didn't like Harrison's diss video

Twitter Andrew Wiggins’ commitment to Kansas today came as a shock to most of the country, despite the Jayhawks being one of the four finalists named during his recruitment. Many had pegged the two favorites to be Florida State, where his parents are alumni, and Kentucky, where literally half of the other top ten prospects had signed on to play. But perhaps there was more to his decision than just a desire to play for KU coach Bill Self. Last Friday, one of those big-time UK commits, Aaron Harrison, posted a Vine (video) to his Twitter account. In the video, one of his friends in the backseat was heard saying “f*** Andrew Wiggins, we don’t need him”. The video was quickly deleted, but not before being widely circulated on social media. Harrison, to his credit, said he had no issues with Wiggins and that he wasn’t the voice in the video: @bigr3d17 lol it wasn’t me or my brother! It was that kid in the backseat! Lol — Aaron Harrison (@AaronICE2) May 10, 2013 Fair enough. Maybe it wa...

After the Jayhawks landed top recruit Andrew Wiggins, Kansas Athletics released a video of head coach Bill Self reacting to the highly anticipated commitment. In the video, Self says that getting Wiggins was a total surprise. He also called Wiggins an “assassin” and an “alpha dog.”
Check it out:

Wiggins will be a huge impact player for the already stacked Jayhawk squad. Wiggins will join several other signees at Kansas: Joel Embiid, Brannen Greene, Connor Frankamp, Frank Mason, and Wayne Selden.

Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball coach Bill Self was seen shuffling down the court MC Hammer-style during overtime of Wednesday night's 68-67 double overtime win over Oklahoma State.

It was in the final seconds of the first overtime when Self broke out the sidestep shuffle, which seems to be the popular dance move among college basketball coaches this year.

TCU players skipped classes and had their cars towed after beating Kansas

Bill Self called it the worst loss in Kansas Jayhawks history, and conversely it was the biggest win in TCU Horned Frog history. Look, there is no history for TCU basketball, at least nothing of significance. They were losers of 8 straight, all in conference, before their shocking win over #5 Kansas. They rank 345th in the country in points per game. They are a bad basketball team. You cannot really blame them for wanting to live it up after their historic win. But the players may have taken it a bit too far. According to what TCU coach Trent Johnson told the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram, players were so busy celebrating the win, that they missed classes the following day, and had their cars towed. “Did I think some of this stuff could happen today? No question,” TCU told the Star-Telegram. “But when this program is where it needs to be and we’re winning and competing at a high level consistently, I won’t have to worry about this stuff. Today, I’m not very happy and that’s just the way...

Bill Self Calls His Squad The Worst Kansas Team Ever

Gut punch there by Coach Self…

Last night, the #5 ranked Kansas men’s basketball team was upset 62-55 by TCU, an opponent that was previously win-less in Big 12 conference play.
The final score fails to paint the whole picture. The Jayhawks were held to only 13 first-half points en route to their 2nd straight loss, which led head coach Bill Self to make his gut punching proclamation.
“I assess the whole game as, what’s the right word? Futility?” Self said. “I don’t know how to describe it. It was awful. Even as bad as it was, which it was horrendous … Offensively, that is as bad as you can play. We got off to such a bad start, and obviously it got worse from there.”
“It was the worst team Kansas has ever put on the floor,” Self said emphatically. “Since Dr. [James] Naismith was there. I think he had some bad teams and lost to the YMCA the first couple years.”
You know you’re coach is mad when you’re the 5th ranked team in college basketball and he compares you to a rec lea

Kansas coach Bill Self ripped for Twitter game

For some reason I follow Kansas head coach Bill Self on Twitter. Don’t ask me why, I, along with 62,000 other people, just do. Today while scanning my timeline I stumbled across the above tweet and did a serious double-take. In one of the most hard-to-read tweets I’ve seen from anyone over the age of 12, Bill Self is congratulating former Jayhawk Mario Chalmers on the fact that his jersey is being retired at KU. Here were the first two responses: Apparently Self got the message and posted a rebuttal about a half hour later: Now by no means is this one a grammatical masterpiece, but it is definitely an improvement. Kansas fans were probably so pumped to see him crawling out of the Twitter cracks after such a long hiatus. However, seeing all of this backlash don’t be surprised if Self falls right back into Twitter hibernation for another few months. [@CoachBillSelf] Filed under: Basketball, NCAA

Self takes home Naismith award

Kansas' Bill Self has been named the 2012 Naismith Men's College Basketball Coach of the Year, the school announced on Sunday.

"Bill has done a remarkable coaching job this season and deserves all the accolades that come his way," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, which presents the honor. "There's always something special about adding another chapter of Kansas Basketball to the Naismith Awards family."

Self is the third Jayhawks coach to win the the award, joining Larry Brown (1988) and Roy Williams (1997). He beat out finalists John Calipari, Jim Boeheim and Frank Haith this year.

Kansas compiled a 31-7 record this season and earned a spot in the national title game against Kentucky. It's Self's ninth season leading the Jayhawks and he has a 269-52 record over that time.

"This is a terrific honor. When you think of postseason awards, anything that has (James) Naismith's name in front of it is a huge award and certainly I'm very proud of this," Self said in a statement. "It is a reflection of how our team performed all year long. There are so many good coaches out there to choose from but I am honored they picked me."

At the 11:52 mark of the second half of the NCAA tournament's Midwest Regional final, North Carolina hit the under-12-minute media timeout with 61 points. Over the previous eight minutes, they'd scored 14 points. In the eight minutes before that, they'd scored 16. The Tar Heels were in their comfort zone, setting the tempo, on pace for a game in the 80s, dragging Kansas a team almost as swift as Carolina but not nearly as deep into a track meet.

That is, until Bill Self reached into his bag of tricks. He dumped the straight-up man-to-man look, and pulled out a junk defense, one the Jayhawks hadn't used since they'd escaped Purdue in Omaha: The triangle-and-2. In layman's terms, it meant two guys playing man-to-man and the other three in a zone.

"And they just didn't know what to do with it," Kansas guard Conner Teahan
