Number One Cop On The Job

“If Sergei Bobrovsky is so good why would Philly get rid of him?” I made this point multiple times during the off season. I’m a big fan of Steve Mason. Always have been, always will be. Which is why I didn’t give Bob a chance when the season started. Bad move on my part. Sergei [...]

Sergei Bobrovsky Is A Vezina Trophy Finalist

(via Columbus Blue Jackets)
What's worse than having a starting goaltender who ducks when a shot is coming towards him? A goaltender who used to play for your team, who was traded to a struggling franchise and then becoming a Vezina Trophy finalists.
Former Flyers netminder Sergei Bobrovsky was named a finalst for the NHL's best goaltender. Bob, along with Antti Niemi and defending Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist, are the three finalists for the honor.
Bobrovsky finished the season with a 21-11-6 record, and was 7th in the NHL in wins. His play almost led a Rick Nash-less organization to the postseason. Bob registered a .932 save percentage (2nd in the NHL), and a 2.00 goals against average, which was 5th in the NHL. He also had four shutouts on the season.
The Philadelphia Flyers traded Sergei Bobrovsky to Columbus in exchange for three draft picks, which was eventually Anthony Stolarz, Taylor Leier and a fourth rounder in this upcoming draft.
After the jump, the bes...

Sergei Bobrovsky makes seven saves in a few seconds

In the Columbus Blue Jackets final game of the regular season and a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on the line, Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky did everything in his power to keep their season alive. Bobrovsky made seven saves in a matter of a few seconds in order to keep the game at tied at 0-0 and secured his spot as a Vezina Trophy Finalist. There was complete chaos in front of Bobrovsky and it’s a minor miracle that he was able to keep the puck out. Unfortunately despite Columbus beating Nashville 3-1 on Saturday night, the Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings winning knocked them out of the playoffs.

No Doubting The Blue Jackets

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

Whatever happens, the Jackets have written one of the best stories of this truncated season. Their goaltender, Sergei Bobrovsky, is the front-runner for the Vezina Trophy (best goaltender) and is integral to the script. Yet the cast is large and the tale seems pure fantasy.

Since Feb. 26, when they had the worst record in the NHL, the Jackets have lost fewer games (five) in regulation than any other team in the league. Over the same span, they have accrued more points (41) than any team save for Pittsburgh, Washington and Chicago. It is crazy.

They are 18-5-5 in 28 games over the past 60 days. They went 5-1 in their final six road games after going 5-11-2 in their previous 18. They have won at Minnesota, Anaheim and San Jose. They have won without Artem Anisimov, one of their top centers; and Nikita Nikitin, who mans a point on their power play; and Matt Calvert, their bowling-ball winger.

On Thursday night, they won in D...

Bobrovsky outduels Coyotes in Blue Jackets win

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Sergei Bobrovsky made 39 saves in regulation and overtime, then two more in the shootout to finish with his second career shutout -- both coming in the last week -- to lift surging Columbus to a 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night, extending the Blue Jackets' franchise record point streak to 10 games.

Artem Anisimov and Mark Letestu scored in the shootout, making nice moves then firing shots past Mike Smith, who made 23 saves and also got credit for a shutout, his fourth of the season and 23rd of his career. It was the fourth straight shootout game for the Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets improved to 6-0-4 in their last 10 games. Bobrovsky has been a big reason why, stopping 239 of 245 shots in his past eight games.

Phoenix has dropped four of its last six.

There wasn't much end to end play in the game, but when there was a chance, the goalies were there to snuff them out.

In overtime, Bobrovsky gloved a tough Martin Hanzal shot seemingly with ease and Bran

Sergei Bobrovsky makes a nice diving stick save in overtime

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been playing very well lately and even took the league-best Chicago Blackhawks to a shootout on Thursday night. But, in order to get there, Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky had to make this awesome last-ditch effort stick save. Now Chicago Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland should have lifted the puck, but it was still a great effort by Bobrovsky to get over and make the save. Unfortunately for Bobrovsky it wouldn’t matter because once they got to the shootout, Patrick Kane absolutely undressed him to give the Hawks the win.
Blue Jackets hope Sergei Bobrovsky offers net gain

Is Sergei Bobrovsky the future of Columbus goaltending? Perhaps he is. He arrived with the Blue Jackets from the Philadelphia Flyers for a second-round pick (45th overall) and two fourth-round picks in this NHL Draft. He is an acrobatic if unorthodox goaltender. He makes unbelievable saves . . . and lets in some odd goals as well. But Bobrovsky is clamoring for a chance to be the lead guy again. With Steve Mason as “competition,” the Blue Jackets will offer that opportunity.Back in 2010-11, Bobrovsky looked like a budding star. He went 28-13-8 with a 2.59 goals-against average for the Flyers. But Philly is a tough town for goaltenders. Turnover has been constant.Eventually Flyers GM Paul Holmgren fell hopelessly in love with veteran Ilya Bryzgalov – who got what amounts to a lifetime contract – and Bobrovsky ended up on the block. It should be noted that Bobrovsky had his success playing on a very good team. And while playing on a very good team last season as a back-up, he posted a su...
