Kid attends game dressed as Don Cherry

Spotted in the stands during Friday night’s Jets-Penguins tilt was this mini Don Cherry, ably played by Kelly Thornhill of Winnipeg. The adorable youngster won a Don Cherry look-a-like contest, with her prize being seats to the game and the chance to meet the Ron MacLean and Don Cherry. I was going to say the real Don Cherry, but let’s be honest, the irascible 79-year-old has become nothing more than a bloviating caricature of himself these last five years. Here’s Thornhill in full get-up beside a picture of Cherry for comparison’s sake (FYI—she’s the cuter, more tolerable one on the right)… From the garish suit right on down to the snow white goatee, Kelly Thornhill nailed it. [CBS Sports] The post This little Don Cherry look-a-like is infinitely cuter than the real Don Cherry appeared first on Last Angry Fan.

Don Cherry Expects Two-Month NHL Lockout, Says 'It's a Shame'

It's becoming harder and harder to remain optimistic that the NHL season will start on time. Don Cherry, for one, has lost all confidence in that being a possibility. The former NHL coach and current Hockey Night in Canada commentator said Friday he expects there to be a two-month lockout, according to Canada's Pembroke Daily Observer. "I'm afraid it looks like two months. Everybody's talking that they're going to be out two months," Cherry reportedly said. "It's a lockout, it's a shame. Everybody's making money but everybody wants more money, and wouldn't you? And that's the way it works. It's...

Reds analyst Chris Welsh channels his inner Don Cherry

Living within the Reds television market, I get to see a game from time to time. However, I've never seen Reds analyst Chris Welsh (the crafty lefthander) wear anything remotely close to this outfit seen Tuesday night, but the suit seems to be a part of his rotation. I believe Welsh has a "Bowtie Tuesday" tradition as well, but the colorful suit certainly adds another dimension. Hey, if it works for Craig Sager and Don Cherry... why not bring it to America's pastime? Actually, I'd take Welsh's suit over 90% of what Don Cherry wears on a regular basis. Something about the shades of green and blue that go together quite well with this particular ensemble.

Thank goodness for Welsh, the Reds seem to be a little less strict on their dress code than the Diamondbacks.

Don Cherry thinks the metric system is part of a vast Communist conspiracy?

We all know Don Cherry dresses outlandishly and says outlandish things, but this line from CBC's coverage of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final was an eyebrow raiser even by the coach's lofty standards. While host Ron MacLean was discussing travel distances, Cherry scoffs at his use of kilometers and angrily snarls, "don't give me any of that commie stuff." Oh, boy...

Harrison Mooney over at Puck Daddy actually makes a pretty solid case where Don Cherry may actually get the whole notion of an elaborate Communist conspiracy using the metric system since it was adopted in Canada 40 years ago. America got The Beatles while our friends north of the border got centimeters, kilograms, and old Communist conspiracies put forward by hockey analysts wearing brightly colored suits.
There is just so much to unpack in this brief clip. First of all, the metric system was invented by the French, not by communists. Secondly, the metric system is fairly standard all over ...

Don Cherry calls metric system 'commie stuff' (Video)

Canadian hockey commentator Don Cherry referred to the metric system as "commie stuff" during his postgame comments after the New Jersey Devils defeated the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday night.

Fellow commentator Ron MacLean asked Cherry if he thought that 120,000 kilometers of traveling over the course of the season was catching up with the Kings, implying that it might be the reason they can't put away the Devils. Cherry replied "How many is that in real miles?" MacLean quickly converted that to 73,500 miles, at which point Cherry made the comment "Don't give me that commie stuff."

Obviously Cherry's comment was a bit over the top, and Ron MacLean's facial expression as he reacted to that remark spoke volumes:

Don Cherry took down a flower shop for his suit tonight

I'd love to see the ladies at "While The Men Watch" try to describe Don Cherry's suit tonight. Even those hockey fans with a keen eye may struggle to put this floral collection into words. I must say though, with Memorial Day Weekend approaching here in the states, Cherry's suit puts me in quite a festive mood. Who would have thought a 78 year old man could find the perfect combination of lime green, gold, rose, and violet in a brightly colored flower suit? One must commend Don Cherry for his outlandish style of dress that disproves stereotypes put forth by CBC in alternate forums!

Don Cherry reintroducing suits to the wild

TORONTO—With spring reluctantly arriving across Canada and fields beginning to blossom, hockey commentator and conservationist Don Cherry traveled to rural Ontario this week to re-release several of his floral suits back into their natural habitat.

The reintroduction effort is part of a program developed by Cherry in which he fosters much of Canada’s indigenous plant species through the harsh winter, and then returns them to the wild in the spring, thus promoting sustainable flower use and ensuring he has a bright crop of flowers to make new suits when hockey resumes in the fall.

“I love Canada and I love her natural beauty,” said Cherry abrasively. “Canada flowers are tough. Canada flowers are wild. They aren’t these pansy ass European flowers you see lining up neatly in farms and showin’ off! I take these flowers under my wing so they can be taught to be hard nosed and live outdoors—the way flowers were meant to be.”

Cherry takes issue with Crosby for style of play

Don Cherry joined a growing number of hockey personalities who are publicly taking issue with Sidney Crosby.
After New York Rangers coach John Tortorella labeled Crosby a whiner, Cherry spoke out against the Pittsburgh Penguins captain during his weekly "Coach's Corner" segment on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.
"A long time ago when Crosby was coming out, I tried to warn him (to) 'quit diving, quit whining.' (Then) I was the worst guy in the world ... and all I was trying to do was help him," Cherry said.
"All I said was stop whining, stop diving and snapping the head back."
Philadelphia Flyers assistant Craig Berube and television analyst Mike Milbury also took shots at Crosby last week.
Tortorella was fined $20,000 after claiming that Pittsburgh was one of the dirtiest teams in the league.
"It's a cheap, dirty hit," Tortorella said after Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik took Rangers forward Derek Stepan out with a kn...

Don Cherry blasts Maple Leafs GM Burke

Hockey Night In Canada commentator Don Cherry verbally blasted Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke during Saturday night's broadcast. The former Boston Bruins coach called out Burke for not having enough Canadians on his team and for trying to get him fired."If you want Americans, you got the team. It's the only organization in Canada that cheers when Canada loses and it's an absolute shame...He has all Americans, he has American college guys who play for him right now," Cherry ranted. The outburst comes a day after Burke, who was raised in Edina, Minnesota, fired 2010 U.S. men's national hockey coach Ron Wilson from his head coaching position with the Maple Leafs. Burke had complained in the past that Cherry was being critical of Wilson during his CBC segments. Cherry finally responded to the complaint in a heated fashion Saturday."Here's what kills me- Burke goes to my bosses and says I'm a bad guy and I said something 'vicious&...

'Don Cherry's Piano Desk' Pokes Fun at Coach's Habit of Tapping Fingers While Talking (Video)

Don Cherry likes to emphasize his points with his hands. Whether he's calling people "turncoats" or just rambling about the Toronto Maple Leafs, the former Bruins coach and current CBC broadcaster is never at a loss for words and is never afraid to stamp his hands down to make a point. One enterprising YouTube user noted Cherry's predilection for placing his hands on his desk while he speaks, and reimaged a recent "Coach's Corner" segment from Hockey Night in Canada as if Cherry was attempting to play the piano. It's pretty neat. See for yourself in the video below.

Don Cherry Criticizes the Canucks – And He’s Right… Mostly

Don Cherry did something that he rarely does on Coach’s Corner yesterday, he talked about the Vancouver Canucks. Cherry said the Canucks weren’t paying the price (actually he said ‘playing the price’, but we know what you meant Don). He also said that people were unfairly pointing the finger at Roberto Luongo (actually, he said Lulongo… he said Bieska too in case you’re wondering), that the Canucks need to block more shots and that they need to stop whining. And you know what? He’s right… Mostly.
Skip ahead to the 5:15 mark for Cherry’s Canucks rant:

So are the Canucks ‘paying the price’ enough? No, I don’t think they are. I don’t necessarily think that this is something people should be overly concerned about yet, it’s still early after all, but they’re not playing up to their potential yet. I don’t say this because for statistical reasons, I say this because I watch the games. Their effort could be better, and I expect that to improve.

What Cherry is out to lunch on was us
