Was There A Failed Intervention? Are We Only Looking Inside The Box?

There are, suddenly, events taking place about which I know nothing. Maybe.A Ju-Ju intervention may have been launched from a secret location upstate which did not help in yesterday's game. I hope that is not the case. Are we dealing with North Korea here?We have only so much " intervention"ammunition available, given the "sequestered " cuts in our intervention budgets, and so many future threats and assaults against this Yankee team are anticipated.Nonetheless, a few queries for the troops and field commanders:1. How many more position players must be injured until Cashman is forced to bring up an actual rookie from our minor league system?Answer: Unlimited. Cashman, like the recently "retired" Pope, is hiding something. He desperately wants to conceal the fact that we don't have a single prospect who can, today ( or next year ), successfully play in the major leagues. Like the recent Pope's legacy, egregious crimes have been commi...

Another first round pick down the drain?

Ty Hensley, our first pick last June, needs hip surgery and will be out for three months. He's 19, and it's crazy to think he's done. But it's just as crazy to think this isn't a really bad sign. Good grief, how do we find these guys? Will a first round pick ever make it?Look at the list of the last 10 years.2003: Eric Duncan (washout)2004: Phil Hughes (success! but will we keep him?)2004: Jonathan Poterson (total washout)2004: Jeffrey Marquez (ho-hum)2005: Carl Henry (washout) 2006: Ian Kennedy (biggest success of group! but we traded him)2006: Joba Chamberlain (success! but did we ruin him?)2007: Andrew Brackman (washout)2008: Gerrit Cole (wouldn't sign)2008: Jeremy Bleich (hurt, probable washout)2009: Slade Heathcott (was hurt, entering make or break year)2010: Cito Culver (hasn't hit, ascent slowing)2011: Dante Bichette Jr. (coming off disappointing year)2012: Ty Hensley (now this...)When a great prospect suffers an injury like this, there's no way...

Yanks make more cuts in camp

Yankees top prospect Gary Sanchez will start the year in the minors.
According to the LoHud Yankees Blog, the Bombers have made some more cuts today, trimming their spring roster down in the first week of March.
The players who will now go to the minor league camp are:
Francisco Arcia C
Tyler Austin OF
Greg Bird 1B
Cito Culver SS
Kyle Higashioka C
Gary Sanchez C
Rob Segedin OF
Top prospects Sanchez and Austin were never strongly considered to break camp with the team, as they need more seasoning in the minor leagues. Expect the Yanks to obviously make more cuts as the season comes closer and roster spots have to be finalized.

Reports From Instructs: New York Yankees (Pt 4)

In the past week I’ve seen some amateur events (UF Scout Day, Florida Diamond Club) that I’ll write about here and I’ll be covering the WWBA tournament in Jupiter for ESPN. I also still have lots of instructs reports and extra regular season minor league reports to offload. So, before I move on to all these new topics, here’s the final notes from Yankees instructs, starting with some power arms.
I saw two outings from 20-year-old righty Gabe Encinas, a 6th round pick in 2010 out of a California high school. He sat 93-95 in the first outing and 94-96 in the second outing, getting plenty of swings and misses from his plus-plus velocity. He’s got a clean arm but his delivery is a little rough as he’s throws across his body due to the angle he takes on the mound. This makes him tougher on right handed hitters and creates a little more deception, but also makes his delivery much more east-west than is necessary, costing him command. The arm is electric enough that a straight-on delivery ...

Cito Culver Struggles In the SAL

When the New York Yankees selected Cito Culver in the first round of the 2010 draft, the pick was met with surprise — shock actually. From upstate New York, the teenage shortstop was pegged as a third round pick or later by most accounts. Two years later, Culver’s batting average is just above the “Mendoza Line” and his slugging percentage sits below .300.
Video after the jump

So what’s wrong with Culver? Maybe nothing as a scout I crossed paths with in Auburn, New York mentioned seeing him quite a bit as an amateur and considered Culver a better bet to reach the major leagues as a pitcher than position player. In hearing he popped the mitt at 92-94 MPH as an amateur, one has to wonder if the Yankees would consider pulling the plug on Culver the shortstop in favor of Culver the relief pitcher.
Listed at six feet tall and 185 pounds, Culver may have been a bit heavier in person as his lower half has really started to fill out. This may limit his range some on defense, but Culver di...

Manager takes base during meltdown

WCIV-TV | ABC News 4 - Charleston News, Sports, Weather
Everyone remembers Asheville Tourists manager Joe Mikulik's nuclear meltdown from 2006, right? Well, six years later, Mikulik struck again against the Charleston Riverdogs, a Yankees affiliate.
After Cito Culver is apparently picked up, he somehow evades the tag and gets to third base. Mikulik's major gripe is that he believes Culver was out of the baselins, and he proceeds to show the umpires where exactly the baseline is...then runs over to the umpires, swears some more, and then rips third base out of the ground, much to the confusion of Culver, attempting to stand on the bag.
To top off Mikulik's insanity, he handed the third base bag to a fan in the ground, and doffed his cap and bowed as he left the field. Good god almighty, what a legend.

Asheville Tourists’ Manager Joe Mikulik Steals Third Base! (Video)

If you ever need a coach to come to your defense please don’t hesitate to call on Asheville Tourists’ manager, Joe Mikulik. For the second time in six years Joe Mikulik has an epic meltdown for what he believed to be a missed call. It was only the first inning when Cito Culver was picked off second base, but was able to sidestepped the tag from third baseman Samuel Mende as he advanced to third safely. Joe Mikulik didn’t see it that way as he shows the world his former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon’s tantrum. Take a look.
Live5News.com | Charleston, SC | News, Weather, Sports
As you can guess, Joe Mikulik got ejected once again for his tantrum, but it didn’t stop Asheville Tourists defeating Charleston Riverdogs 4-1.
Here is a look back at his first episode six years ago.

FanGraphs Prospect Stock Watch – 07/06/12

Tyler Anderson, LHP, Colorado Rockies
Current Level: A
2012 Top 15 Prospects Ranking: 8th
Current Value: Down
The 20th overall selection of the 2011 draft, Anderson was known as a fairly polished college pitcher who had a modest ceiling but was expected to move quickly through the system and offer Colorado big league help in short order. The organization kept Anderson out of game action after he signed late in 2011 and then assigned him to A-ball to begin 2012 when he missed the start of the season due to injury. After 11 starts the southpaw is still in low-A ball and his numbers have been modest. He’s shown excellent control with just 17 walks in 64.1 innings (2.15 BB/9) but he’s struck out just 37 batters (5.06 K/9). Anderson, 22, looks like a back-of-the-rotation starter unless he makes some unexpected adjustments.

Prospect Profile: Angelo Gumbs

Another scouting profile brought to you by Dayne Huber. It’s his first crack at a position player, and he did a great job with it. Check it out.
The Yankees 2010 second round draft pick was a surprise pick and many scouts and talent evaluators considered it a reach. Angelo Gumbs was just 17 at the time of the draft, the second youngest player drafted by any team that year. When he was originally drafted Gumbs really didn’t have a true position, having played short stop, center field and second base in high school. The only thing the Yankees were certain of when they drafted him was that he was an elite athlete with some good pop in his bat for a player that projected to play somewhere up the middle. After signing their first round pick Cito Culver as a short stop and Mason Williams as a center fielder, they decided to give Gumbs a look at second base.
It wasn’t until instructs his first year that the Yanks really got a good look at what they had and they were not disappointed. Gumbs quickly starte

Better Know a Prospect Countdown: 20 - 11

Before delving into my constantly evolving (and therefore somewhat arbitrary) rankings, I felt it would be prudent to provide a few token honorable mentions:Zoilo Almonte has all the makings of a league-average corner outfielder. He's a switch hitter with five average or so tools (and increasing productivity against southpaws), and he could probably fake center field in a pinch without embarrassing himself terribly. The shockingly still only 22-year-old Jairo Heredia is perpetually a healthy year away from rocketing up the list, featuring above-average command and control on three potentially average offerings and fairly sound mechanics. Graham Stoneburner was featured prominently on this list last year, but injuries and slipping effectiveness revealed some nicks in the bedrock in what most would consider a low-risk, low-reward type prospect. David Adams, despite his injuries, continues to impress me with a fine approach at the plate, plus bat speed, and surprisingly strong defe...

Angelo Gumbs, Your 2012 Breakout Prospect

This entry was posted in part on The Yankee Analysts.Prospects with flashy tools and unparalleled athleticism often find themselves on the fast track into my heart. Those that are able to couple such glamor with results and other positive indicators are enough to make me swoon. Angelo Gumbs is such a prospect, and I would not be surprised to see him garnering praise this time next year a la Mason Williams … who may well be, dare I say, a slightly less athletic, less powerful version of Gumbs. At face value, Gumbs’ 2011 production may be categorized as somewhat lacking. In prospecting, though, one must always dig deeper. The future center fielder was the youngest regular in the New York-Penn League this past season, checking in as nearly two months younger than Cito Culver (the second youngest). It’s also worth noting that he is nearly fourteen months younger than Williams – and this, at an age where physical and emotional maturity is of the utmost importance. In terms of tools, Gumbs...

Jesus Montero02. Gary Sanchez03. Manny Banuelos04. Dellin Betances05. Mason Williams06. Dante Bichette, Jr. 07. David Phelps08. Ravel Santana09. Tyler Austin10. Adam Warren11. Austin Romine12. J.R.
