Wild's player pipeline important to take next step

ST. PAUL, Minn. Before Zach Parise and Ryan Suter arrived to transform the Minnesota Wild, the organization's hopes were pinned on a group of heralded prospects considered among the best in the entire league. The prospect core that included a potential shutdown defenseman, a playmaking center and a goal-scoring power forward was ranked No. 3 in The Hockey News' annual Future Watch list in February. Many of Minnesota's crop of rookies got a chance to contribute in 2013, from defenseman Jonas Brodin, to forwards Charlie Coyle, Jason Zucker and Mikael Granlund, to goaltender Darcy Kuemper. And the influx of young talent could very well increase next year."Yeah, that's where I guess the upside is," general manager Chuck Fletcher said at his season-ending press conference. "There's risk because we don't know. Maybe nobody does, but certainly (2012 first-rounder Mathew) Dumba and Granlund are knocking on the door. Darcy Kuemper is knocking on the door. But beyond that, you look

Minnesota Rookie Jason Zucker’s OT Goal Beats Blackhawks (Video)

The Minnesota Wild celebrated their first home playoff victory in over five years Sunday night, but it wasn’t easy. Wild rookie Jason Zucker took his opportunity in over time to put the heavily favored Chicago Blackhawks away.
Zucker trailed the puck, which was being moved behind the net, and crept to the front of the net virtually unseen. He knew that he’d have only a split second to find his shot and that the angle would be nearly impossible; that didn’t stop this unflappable rookie though.
Here is what Zucker had to say about his game winning goal:
“I don’t know if I even saw the net. I probably didn’t even look at the net.” He went on to say, “I just tried shooting it, and it happened to go in for me.”
Some may call that luck but if they’ve seen Zucker play they’d know that his work effort and toughness creates his good fortune. This is only the beginning for this young Wild team. They probably won’t upset the experienced Blackhawks in this series but the future is very bright fo

Zucker providing late game spark for Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. Matt Cullen was just trying to keep the puck in the Minnesota Wild's possession while lying on his stomach behind the Chicago Blackhawks net in overtime on Sunday.

Cullen, one of Minnesota's few playoff-savvy veterans, poked the puck out to forward Jason Zucker, the high-energy, speedy forward playing in just his third NHL postseason game. Zucker, who has brought his shoot-first mentality to the Wild in his young career, thought only one thing: put the puck on net.

Cullen, watching from his stomach, didn't expect a shot. But Zucker, 21, has been anything but timid in his first NHL playoff series.

"That play there, a lot of guys probably wouldn't have even shot that," Cullen said. "But he's got that nose for the net. He easily could have won that first game, he hit the bar in overtime and it could be an awfully different series. He's a goal scorer and it's nice to have that."

Zucker had a prime chance in overtime in the series' first game

Jason Zucker wins it for the Wild

After blowing a 2-1 lead late in the third period, the Minnesota Wild were back on their heels at the start of overtime. But, Wild forward Matt Cullen made an awesome play from his stomach to not only keep control of the puck but to get it to Jason Zucker. Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford was down early and that gave Zucker some room up top to shoot. Despite his horrible angle, Zucker found a space and fired the puck home to win the game. This goal brought the series to 2-1 and has given the Wild a chance again. Had they gone down 3-0 they would have been in serious trouble.
Wild recall Zucker, Veilleux from Houston for finale

ST. PAUL, Minn. Facing a nearly must-win situation in the regular-season finale Saturday night, the Minnesota Wild recalled forwards Jason Zucker and Stephane Veilleux from the Houston Aeros.

Zucker, 21, and Veilleux, 31, will join the team for its final game in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche, where Minnesota faces a scenario in which a win would clinch a playoff berth for the first time in five seasons.

The Wild reassigned forwards Jake Dowell and Carson McMillian to Houston in corresponding moves.

Veilleux was called up earlier this week for Minnesota but was a healthy scratch in one game before being sent back to the Aeros. He had three goals and five assists for Houston this season.

Zucker is back with the Wild for the third time this season. He has four goals and one assist in 19 games with Minnesota after a season at Houston in which he had 24 goals and 26 assists in 55 games.

Dowell, 28, played in two games for the Wild after being called up with Veilleux earlier in the week. McMillan, 24,

Sputtering Wild recall rookie Zucker for offense

The Minnesota Wild have recalled rookie left wing Jason Zucker from the AHL to help their struggling offense.

The move was made on Friday, after the Wild were shut out by St. Louis and Chicago this week. Minnesota had lost five of seven.

The 21-year-old Zucker leads the Houston Aeros with 24 goals in 55 games. He was named to the AHL's All-Rookie Team this week. In 14 games with the Wild this season, Zucker has four goals and one assist, with a plus-five rating. With Dany Heatley and Matt Cullen hurt, the Wild have been missing some scoring punch.

They host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

Wild Thursday: Zucker out against Colorado

THURSDAY'S STORY LINE: Jason Zucker, who took a nasty hit from Ducks forward Corey Perry on Tuesday, will be out of the lineup Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche.

The league suspended Perry four games for the hit. Zucker skated on his own Thursday morning, and Wild coach Mike Yeo said he anticipates his young forward will travel with the team on its upcoming road trip to Colorado, Vancouver and Detroit.

With Zucker out, Pierre-Marc Bouchard will be back in the lineup. Bouchard has been a healthy scratch the past three games. The 28-year-old has 332 points in 542 career games and is a proven playmaker.

"I want to see him come in and not play the type of game where you are afraid of making a mistake and where you play safe," Yeo said. "I want to see him come in and play with confidence and make a point. He has the ability to do that. He has the ability to control the play and obviously create, and certainly we have to do that within our structure within the way we want to play the gam

Minnesota Wild's Jason Zucker Destroyed By Hard Hit

Minnesota Wild rookie Jason Zucker will probably not remember a lot about Tuesday's game. Anaheim's Corey Perry nailed with a late hit that included a hard shoulder to the head. The poor kid was down for several minutes before he was finally helped up and off the ice.

Football players get a lot of attention for the hits they take, but these guys really get hit hard. From a novice's point of view (like mine) it appears as if they wear less in the way of padding and hit a lot harder since they are zooming around on skates.

Good luck to you Jason and I hope your head doesn't hurt too bad on Wednesday when you wake up.

ST. PAUL, Minn. Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo had just finished watching his team lose a disappointing 2-1 game to the second-place Anaheim Ducks in which Minnesota lost rookie forward Jason Zucker to an upper-body injury and couldn't offer an update on his young scorer.

Yeo said he hadn't watched the play, in which Anaheim forward Corey Perry hit an unsuspecting Zucker late and connected with an elbow to Zucker's head, enough to give his perspective of the hit that drew a game misconduct for Perry and could have the league reviewing the play for further sanctions.

"You can slow these things down," Yeo said. "I'm emotional right now. We just lost a tough game and we lost a player in that game. I have to watch it a couple more times, but you never like seeing one of your players get hit like that."

Aeros’ Zucker ties AHL record for fastest OT goal ever

Check out this goal from Houston Aeros’ forward Jason Zucker. It was the game winner in the Aeros’ matchup Sunday night against the Abbotsford Heat, and it was scored a mere five seconds into extra time, tying the American Hockey League record for fastest goal ever scored in overtime.

Zucker debuts in Wild's 3-2 overtime triumph

ST. PAUL, Minn. Highly-regarded prospect Jason Zucker received his initiation into the NHL on Thursday, courtesy of his new Minnesota Wild teammates.

Zucker, the 20-year old coming straight to the NHL from Denver University, was told to lead the team out on the ice for the pregame skate. He knew something was amiss, but he wasn't going to undermine the veteran leaders on the roster. So, with many fans in attendance wearing his No. 16 jersey, Zucker jumped onto the ice to start warm-ups. His new teammates had a little fun at the rookie's expense, waiting in the tunnel and letting him have a solo lap.

"I knew right away," Zucker said of the prank. "They said, 'You're leading us on the ice.' And I knew that wasn't right. I had to go with it. I wasn't going to tell (Dany) Heatley no.
All of them, they said, 'Hey, you're leading us on, first game.' Ok. I'll go."

Zucker could only offer up a big smile as he finished the second of his laps.
