Norwegian hockey player hits Swedish player in the nuts with stick (video)

If there’s one thing about Norway and Sweden, two European neighbors who share a long border, it’s that the citizens of each country don’t much like each other. And that pervasive antipathy carries over to the bitter hockey rivalry that exists between the countries.
With that in mind, I suppose it should come as no surprise that when the respective hockey teams meet up in a tournament, say, the IIHF World Championships, the ever-present bad blood can boil over and bad things can potentially happen.
That scenario played out in a ball-busting way when Norway and Sweden met up for a game at the IIFH World Championships recently, when Norway’s Ole-Kristian Tollefsen, who once played in the NHL for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers, used his stick as an improvised crotch-bat and drilled Sweden’s Calle Jarnkrok right in the nuts.
Via Puck Daddy:

Yamma hamma, I don’t care what country you’re from, that has to hurt. Unless you’re from a country whose population consists ent...

Is This The Dirtiest Play In Hockey Of All-Time?

Ole-Kristian Tollefsen played for the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Philadelphia Flyers from 2005-2010, while he’s out of the NHL he is now playing for his native Norway in the IIHF World Championships. Tollefsen isn’t a spectacular player and he is best known for being ejected from an Olympic qualifying round game for his massive hit on Slovakia forward Lubos Bartecko which caused him to bleed from the head and gave him a concussion. Well Tollefsen is back in the spotlight again, not for his exemplary play, but for sticking a guy in the nuts. During the IIHF World Championship between Norway and Sweden Tollefsen placed his hockey stick between the legs of Detroit Red Wings prospect Calle Jarnkrok and then smashed him in the nads. I can understand taking a cheap hit on player here and there, but giving someone a circumcision with your hockey stick is just plain wrong.

Red Wings prospect Teemu Pulkkinen’s officially been assigned to Grand Rapids

As MLive's Ansar Khan noted this morning, the Red Wings had to return top prospect Calle Jarnkrok to Sweden so that he may prepare to participate in the World Championships, with Jarnkrok's AHL tenure limited to 9 games and 3 assists' worth of production before he was required to fly back to Gavle a full two weeks before the Worlds begin (the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation's very twitchy about icing the best product they can offer during the second year of their co-hosting of the Worlds with Helsinki, Finland, with the medal rounds taking place in Stockholm this time)...

The Grand Rapids Griffins will close their regular season with a three games-in-three-nights stretch against Peoria (at home) on Friday and road games in Cleveland and Chicago on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Having clinched a playoff spot, the Griffins announced that they've received a significant reinforcement this afternoon (via RedWingsFeed), in the form of the team's other top of...

Red Wings pre-practice chatter: on Jarnkrok and a ‘deadline’ of a different sort

The Red Wings will hit the ice for practice at Joe Louis Arena shortly, then pack up their gear and head to Calgary for a must-win-game against the Flames, and after regrouping with an "off day" on Thursday, the team will prepare for a rather vicious 5-games-in-8-nights slate that's highly likely to determine whether the Wings make the playoffs.

This morning, MLive's Ansar Khan penned an "empty-the-notebook" article that is more than worth reading, and it's about the Wings prospect that most excites me in Calle Jarnkrok. Jarnkrok registered 3 assists in 9 games played for the Grand Rapids Griffins before the Wings had to return him to Sweden so that he could play in the World Championships, and all reports and pictures indicated that the super-skinny prospect is still a bit short of 170 pounds (he's a lanky 5'11"), but his skill level is just absolutely top-flight in terms of skating, playmaking, defensive savvy and plain old generating...

This story qualifies as, "A little late but worth the wait": NHL.com's Brian Hedger spoke to Red Wings...Let's call him "consultant" Nicklas Lidstrom about his role in recruiting Danny DeKeyser, he and his friend Tomas Holmstrom's post-hockey careers, and the high likelihood that Wings fans will learn to pronounce Calle Jarnkrok's name correctly (not "yarn-crock," more like yAIRn-crOOk) within the next year or three:

So, what have you been up to over in Sweden?

Red Wings mid-day news: Jarnkrok to Grand Rapids, Iginla and DeKeyser talk and looking ahead

The Detroit Red Wings will try to go 3-for-3 on their Western U.S. road trip when they tangle with the Phoenix Coyotes tonight (10 PM EDT, FSD/FS Arizona/97.1 FM), but today's "morning" skate won't take place until at or around 3 PM EDT, so the vast majority of today's Red Wings news dovetails the overnight report's storylines, starting with DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose confirming that the Wings are indeed bringing Calle Jarnkrok over to the U.S. to play in what MLive's Ansar Khan reported would be a 9-game stint with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins

Red Wings overnight report: a status report and news about Iginla, DeKeyser, Jarnkrok, etc.

I tried to combine the Red Wings-Ducks wrap-up and set-up for tonight's Wings-Coyotes game (10 PM EST, FSD/FS Arizona/97.1 FM) into one entry because that's how the narrative seemed to present itself, but not everything fit in one place, so...

Prepare for an extravaganza of discussion about Jarome Iginla, Danny DeKeyser, Calle Jarnkrok, Ladislav Smid(!), Pavel Datsyuk, Wings prospect and Saginaw Spirit goalie Jake Paterson, and a wee bit about the NCAA regional hockey playoffs, as one Wings prospect will play in Grand Rapids and another in Toledo.

But we'll start with a fantastic "status report" regarding the 16-11-and-5 Wings from the Los Angeles Times' Helene Elliott, who found that both Wings coach Mike Babcock and forward/alternate captain Pavel Datsyuk believe that the team's adjusting to Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom's retirements and the departures of Brad Stuart and Jiri Hudler at exactly the rate they expected the team to acclima...

FSD’s Daniels: Red Wings prospect Calle Jarnkrok will be assigned to Grand Rapids

According to Fox Sports Detroit's Ken Daniels, Calle Jarnkrok is flying to Detroit tonight, and he will join the Grand Rapids Griffins on Monday. He's not coming to Detroit for a look-see next weekend--he's coming over to play.

I'd imagine that the Wings will release Jarnkrok to Sweden for the World Championships in April as they take place in Stockholm and Helsinki this year, with the finals to be held in Stockholm, but it's great to hear that he's coming over to do more than take the customary rink tour.

Red Wings will bring prospect Calle Jarnkrok to Detroit to visit, not play

Red Wings prospect Calle Jarnkrok's Swedish team, Brynas IF, won't repeat as Swedish Eliteserien champions. They were ingloriously swept from the playoffs by Skelleftea AIK on Monday, leaving Jarnkrok's future up in the air.

The Wings signed him a year ago, but chose to loan him to Brynas for the Eliteserien season, and the Swedish-language newspapers have assumed that he's heading to Detroit next season...But the Wings have tended to assign players graduating to the AHL or NHL level the following season to the AHL's Grand Rapids Grifins.

According to Aftonbladet's Hans Abrahamsson and PEO Larsson report that the Wings will bring Jarnkrok to Detroit sooner than later, but he's only coming over to visit for now.
Savage explains why Dekeyser, Jarnkrok and Nyquistt aren’t at the Red Wings’ development camp

Via RedWingsFeed, I was wondering why MLive’s Brendan Savage was furiously writing away on his laptop, and here’s the reason: Savage has the scoop as to why free agent defenseman and Western Univeristy of Michigan junior Danny DeKeyser isn’t at the Red Wings’ summer development camp, and he clarifies why Calle Jarnkrok (took part in the World Championships) and Gustav Nyquist aren’t here as well:

He wasn’t going to go to any camps this year,” assistant general manager Jim Nill said this morning. “Every team is after him. He decided not to go into any camps. He wanted to focus on training. He was here last year.”

DeKeyser decided to remain at WMU, where he’s played the last two years, and hone his skills for at least one more season rather than giving the NHL a shot.
