Michael Dropping The Hammer – June 18, 2013

It was a rough week for NASCAR competitors as the weekend’s events at the Michigan International Speedway were overshadowed by the death of driver Jason Leffler Wednesday night.
Alliance Truck Parts 250 thoughts:
Austin Dillon started off Saturday by capturing his fourth straight pole and that is a new Nationwide Series record. That was Dillon’s seventh career pole in 57 starts and puts him tied at 40th all-time in poles. Mark Martin is the all-time leader with 30 poles.
It was a long day for title contenders Brian Vickers and Sam Hornish, Jr. after being involved in a lap 1 accident. The Due finished 33rd and 32nd respectfully, which isn’t good considering the driver they’re chasing won the race.
That driver was Regan Smith, who picked up his second win of the season, and first that wasn’t under controversy. It’s great to see a driver like Smith get a huge opportunity and make the most of it.
Solid outings by a couple of part-time Nationwide Series drivers with Brad Sweet (6th) and...

Austin Dillon Alliance Truck Parts 250 Race Recap

Austin Dillon earned his fourth-consecutive Pole Award in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, setting an all-time series record, but ultimately posted a 20th-place finish in the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet at Michigan International Speedway after cutting a tire in the closing laps of the Alliance Truck Parts 250.
Dillon led the 39-car starting field to the green flag and showed the way for the first half of the race until the caution flag was displayed for a debris on lap 65. Several teams pitted under the yellow flag, but the No. 3 team followed a different pit strategy and stayed out during the caution period. Leading the field to the restart on lap 68, Dillon immediately dropped to seventh in the running order and reported that a left-rear tire was flat on the black No. 3 Chevrolet, forcing an unscheduled green-flag pit stop for four tires and fuel.
The pit stop caused Dillon to fall one lap down to the race leader, in the 16th position. Dillon raced his way into position to earn the “Luc...

Austin Dillon: From Rookie of the Year to NASCAR’s Rising Star

A young driver has been making a name for himself on the NASCAR circuit this season. Nationwide Series driver Austin Dillon put himself on the map this past season by being named NASCAR’s Rookie of the Year.
This season, Dillon hasn’t lost a beat, starting strong with three top five finishes, including a runner-up position at the Iowa Speedway last Sunday. He led by more laps than any driver in the race and currently ranks fourth in the nationwide standings. For Dillon, this is a dream come true.
During an interview on June 12, Dillon discussed his success this season and feels that he and his crew have been putting out solid cars (for) every race, giving themselves a good shot at winning. Dillon also mentioned that the car he drove last week would have competed well in the Sprint Cup Series Race, where the best drivers in NASCAR duel it out on the racetrack.
Dillon, who has raced in three Sprint Cup series and at Daytona this year, is on track to becoming a full-time Sprint Cup dr...

Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon led 207 of 250 laps in the Iowa Pioneer 250 at Iowa Speedway on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately settled for a second-place finish in the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet after losing forward drive during a long green-flag run in the closing stages of the NASCAR Nationwide Series event. Dillon started the 12th race of the 2013 season from the front row after earning his third-consecutive Nationwide Series pole award on Saturday afternoon, tying the record for most consecutive poles in the Series’ history.
The green-flag was displayed to the 40-car starting field shortly after 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday afternoon after rain showers on Saturday caused NASCAR officials to postpone the start of the 200-mile event. Dillon showed speed from the start of the race, immediately driving away from the field and only briefly relinquishing the point position from laps 9 through 24. At times, Dillon extended his lead by as much as six seconds over the second-p...

Dillon looking forward to Iowa

Austin Dillon holds a special place in his heart for Iowa Speedway -- it was at that track on July 11, 2010, where he won his first NASCAR national touring series race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
This Saturday he arrives in Iowa for the DuPont Pioneer 250 (8 p.m. ET, ESPN) three years wiser, three years more experienced and running full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. By the end of the race, he hopes to have improved upon his best finish of fourth, which he posted in last season's edition of the race.
Dillon has traditionally qualified well in Iowa with an average starting position of 7.0 in four series starts. He's started in the third position twice. He and his team, however, aren't as pleased with their finishes -- 28th, 10th, fourth and 15th.
"Iowa Speedway is a place where we have given away a few races," Dillon said. "Going there this year, I've always been pretty strong there and hopefully we can capitalize this year."

France Discusses State of Sport; Dillon on Winning HISTORY 300 Pole

BRIAN FRANCE DISCUSSES SPORT: NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France visited the Charlotte Motor Speedway media center Saturday for what amounted to a “state of the sport” discussion and question-and-answer session with the media, touching on everything from the evolution of the Gen 6 car to the Drive for Diversity to the Air Titan.
Despite discussing many subjects, France said his main point in addressing the media was to highlight the recent hiring of Gene Stefanyshyn as Vice President of Innovation and Racing Development. France said Stefanyshyn will be based at NASCAR’s Research and Development Center in Concord and will focus on improving the racing product and fan experience.
“What we’ve decided is to get more separation between inspecting the cars and running the races every weekend and developing the rules packages of the future and other related items,” France said. “And we’ll be going in a direction … that we’ll be using a lot more science than art in establishing the very t...

Dillon ready for double duty at TMS

FORT WORTH Austin Dillon's double duty at Texas Motor Speedway came to fruition pretty late in the game.

Dillon, who is a regular in the Nationwide Series, didn't find out until Monday that he would be running in Sunday's Sprint Cup race. The seat was originally going to A.J. Allmendinger, but Dillon ended up getting the spot.

"We just kind of got everything put together," said Dillon, who will be running in the Phoenix Racing entry. "Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet here in Texas, along with Red Barn, along with Realtree has come together to work with us to run this week's race."

Dillon, who is fifth in points in the Nationwide Series after five races, said the key for him running both races is to stay hydrated.

He also hopes to keep the string of solid races for Phoenix Racing going. James Finch's team is 11th in the owner point standings with Regan Smith, Allmendinger and Dillon handling the driving duties. Dillon finished 31st and 21st in his two starts this year.

Austin, Ty Dillon in title battles

Things might be tense in the Dillon household this weekend.

Friday night, Ty Dillon is battling for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series title. He enters the race third in the standings, 12 points behind leader James Buescher.

Saturday, Austin Dillon will vie for the NASCAR Nationwide Series title. He also enters his race third in the standings, 25 points behind Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

The Dillons, grandsons of team owner Richard Childress, seem to be taking the pressure in stride. Austin Dillon, 22, won the Truck crown last year and is watching his younger brother try to keep it in the family.

"It's a great week with coming to Homestead and both having a chance to win a championship," Austin Dillon said. "RCR won the Cup race last week. That was really big for our team, and welcome to North Carolina. It's good right now. Yeah, it's a good year other than -- I am pushing Ty. I hope he can finish off the championship, and I think he's got a great shot going into Friday."

Dillon loses pole position

Austin Dillon is in trouble again.

His Nationwide Series pole-winning speed on Friday afternoon was disallowed after his car failed post-qualifying inspection. Officials found an illegal open cooling hose that went into the cockpit, a violation of Rule 20A-2.1J.

He dropped to the rear of the field, No. 42, for the start of the Jalapeno 250 on Friday night but is still credited with winning the pole. However, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will start from the No. 1 position.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said further penalties might be announced next week.

Dillon was also penalized last weekend when his race-winning No. 3 Chevrolet failed post-race inspection at Kentucky Speedway. He still got to claim the win, but the points penalty dropped him to second in the championship.

Dillon's car fails inspection at Daytona

Austin Dillon could be in line for another penalty.

Dillon's No. 3 Chevrolet failed a post-qualifying inspection at Daytona International Speedway on Friday after NASCAR officials found an open cooling hose in the cockpit, which would boost aerodynamics.

The announcement came after Dillon claimed the pole for Friday night's Nationwide race at Daytona. It also came four days after NASCAR penalized Dillon because his car failed inspection following his victory last week at Kentucky. Dillon was docked six points in the standings Monday, dropping him from the top spot.

Dillon earned his first career Nationwide victory by leading 192 of the 200 laps. NASCAR ruled afterward that his car was too low.

Following Dillon's disqualification Friday, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. earned the pole.

Dillon would be open to No. 3 in Sprint Cup Series

Austin Dillon says he'd be honored to drive the late Dale Earnhardt's iconic No. 3 in the Sprint Cup Series.

Dillon is the grandson of Richard Childress, who owns the rights to the number and uses it for Dillon in the Nationwide Series. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has also used the number before in the Nationwide Series, but the No. 3 has not been in a Cup race since Earnhardt's 2001 death.

Dillon picked up his first career Nationwide victory last week at Kentucky, and Childress said after the win he'd be open to moving the number up with his grandson. But he'd want the number to have a different style from how Earnhardt had it designed, and he'll only ever let an Earnhardt or a Dillon use the number.

Dillon loses points lead with penalty

NASCAR has penalized the No. 3 Nationwide Series team of Austin Dillon following rule infractions discovered during postrace inspection last Friday at Kentucky Speedway.

Dillon has been docked six championship points, which will cost him the lead in the standings. He did have a two-point lead in the championship race, but will now trail Elliott Sadler by four.

Dillon's Richard Childress Racing entry was found to be in violation of the rule concerning body height requirements as the car failed to meet the minimum rear car heights.

Crew chief Danny Stockman Jr. has been fined $10,000, while owner of record Morgan Shepherd and Dillon have been penalized with the loss of six championship owner and six championship driver points, respectively. Stockman and car chief Robert Strmiska will remain on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.
