Raiders get down to 75 by cutting James and Elling

The Raiders were only two players away from reaching the mandated maximum roster size of 75. While the Raiders are still in need of a third receiver to fill the hole by the Drew Carter injury, they chose to instead thin their already thin ranks at the position by letting go of Drisan James. While James...

JEREMY BLOOM BECOMES STEELER ALUM

And so we bid adieu to punt returner Jeremy Bloom, the now-former Steeler whose resume also includes male modeling and olympic skiing. The female division of Steeler Nation is surely beside themselves with the news.

Bloom's 2008 preseason stats included zero punt returns, which isn't a good number for a guy who was trying to make the team as a punt returner. So it goes without saying that his release was not a major surprise. That only leaves about 22 other punt returners in camp.

Also released were quarterback Mike Potts and defensive lineman Martavius Prince. The team must release one more player by 4 p.m. tomorrow to get the NFL roster limit of 75.

Steelers cut Bloom, place Sepulveda on IR [Trib]

Eagles players to worry about

In the course of perusing the news today I noticed a common thread that pops up this time of year. The preseason for almost every first string player is over and now is the time where people start to look at who stepped up in preseason and who has been a let down. Just to start off on a positive note, you won't find a member of the media, analyst, or fan that hasn't been truly impressed by what Brodrick Bunkley has done so far this preseason. Peter King recently singled out Bunk in his MMQB column.

Eagles defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley, who was a waste of a roster spot last year in Philly, after being a mid-first-round pick. Now he's playing like the interior space-eater he was drafted to be. Embarrassed by his poor play and his weight last year, Bunkley reported in shape this year and is playing like a house possessed.

Not surprisingly, writers have tended to focus on the negative a bit more. There were a few I found particularly interesting,

Philly sportswriters have a crush!

It's actually starting to get a little weird. Every Thursday I do "The Linc" where I post a bunch of worthwhile Eagles links and a few months back I started to note that almost every week some sportswriter in this town would write a total fluff piece on Jeremy Bloom.

When I say "fluff piece" I mean an article lacking any actual relevancy or value. Not about football or anything on the field, just simply "isn't he cute? He was a model! He used to ski! He was in the Olympics! He's small!"
