2013 TSHQ CFB Preseason Top 25: #5 Texas A&M Aggies

As another off season of College Football material kicks off, this year marks the third year I’ll throw my hat in the ring and look at a number of topics and categories. In the process I’ll look to do everything from predicting next year’s 25 best teams, identify the games of the year, narrow down the Heisman field, identify those replacing 2012′s stars and ultimately make predictions for each league, culminating in a national championship pick. They’ll be many things I’ll be ridiculed for. There will be a number of things that will surprise some people. Ultimately you’ll come away from the next 6 months of material as ready for the college football season as I can possibly make you. While I’ll be sure to miss on things I would like to remind the skeptics I did correctly predict the same number of bowl teams preseason as Phil Steele a year ago as well as top him in BCS Bowl participants predicted before the year. Nonetheless I’m not putting out any magazines soon so keep buying his ...

Biggest Upsets of 2012 (#1): Texas A&M 29 Alabama 24

Texas A&M came into this game at 7-2 and was ranked 15th in the Nation. At first glance, this might not seem like that big of an upset. You would be wrong. Before this game, the Aggies best victory was over Mississippi State and they had lost to the best two teams that they had played (Florida and LSU). The Aggies also had the reputation, earned under the previous coaching regime, of being a team that struggled to finish games and underachieved. Alabama came into this game at 9-0 and was on a 13 game win streak. Alabama was a 14 point favorite to win and they were also playing on their home field.

The Aggies came into Bryant-Denny Stadium and jumped all over the Crimson Tide. By the end of the first quarter, the Aggies were up 20-0 and Alabama fans were trying to figure out what had just happened.

Predictably, Alabama climbed back into the game and seemed to seize all of the momentum as they pulled to within 20-17 going into the fourth quarter. The combination o...

Spring Football: The stars have aligned at Texas A&M

First Practice: March 2
	Spring Game: April 13

These are heady times at Texas A&M, where after a decade of futility, the Aggies head into spring ball as the talk of the college football world. Kevin Sumlin is back for another year after leading Texas A&M to an 11-2 mark in his first campaign as head coach in College Station, and he’s bringing along some guy named Manziel along with him.

But as A&M preps for quite possibly the biggest season in recent school history, there are plenty of questions which still remain.

How will the defense respond to losing several key players? How will the offense look without star coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who has taken over as the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders? And can Sumlin and his staff keep Manziel on a leash, as his quarterback spends most of the spring and summer off campus.

AT&T Cotton Bowl: Texas A&M rips OU

Johnny Manziel tiptoed the sideline for a 23-yard touchdown on Texas A&M's first drive of the game.

The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback known as Johnny Football and the 10th-ranked Aggies were just getting warmed up in the Cotton Bowl. There were plenty more highlights after that nifty run.

In his first game since becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman, Manziel set a Cotton Bowl-record with 516 total yards and accounted for four TDs as the Aggies capped their first SEC season with a 41-13 win over 12th-ranked Oklahoma on Friday night.

With first-year coach Kevin Sumlin and their young star quarterback, the Aggies (11-2) fit right in with the SEC after leaving the Big 12. They broke the SEC record with their 7.261 total yards this season (the first over 7,000 after 633 in Cowboys Stadium). They also averaged more than 40 points a game.

And they capped their debut season with an overwhelming victory in the only postseason game matching teams from those power conferences. It is the Aggies&

Projecting The Best 2012-2013 Non-BCS Bowl This Postseason

Follow @Dan Vasta and like Gridiron Grit on Facebook
While everybody will be clamoring over the BCS title between Notre Dame and the SEC champions, there will be several games that can end up being nearly as entertaining.
Taking all of the other BCS bowl out of the equation, there are a bunch of other matchups that potentially will have even greater hype leading up to it.
I could name all of the non-BCS New Year’s Day games, but just fly out to lovely Arlington, TX where the Cotton Bowl could be the talk of the entire country.
Think about who will win the Heisman because the Texas A&M Aggies are a legit top 10 squad that is simply lighting up the scoreboard and who exactly will end up meeting this high-powered offense on the fourth of January?
How about an ole classic Big 12 matchup between the Aggies and the mighty Oklahoma Sooners?
Landry Jones will playing in its final collegiate game and his 120 career passing TD is worth the ridiculous price to watch this game live in perso...

Sam Houston St.-Texas A&M Preview

After one of the most significant wins in school history, the stage is set for Texas A&M's euphoric return to Kyle Field.

With a sellout crowd expected, the ninth-ranked Aggies and Heisman Trophy candidate Johnny Manziel will seek to avoid an upset Saturday against one of the top teams in the FCS, Sam Houston State.

Texas A&M's successful debut season in the SEC reached a new high last week with the program's second victory against a No. 1 team, a 29-24 stunner at Alabama.

"At the beginning of the season, (coach Kevin Sumlin) told us we can beat anybody on our schedule, and we firmly believed it," linebacker Jonathan Stewart said.

Manziel bolstered his Heisman hopes with 253 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. The freshman also had 92 rushing yards, giving him 1,014 on the season to maintain the SEC lead.

Manziel also remained among the nation's best with 379.4 total yards per game, and kept Texas A&M (8-2) on pace to break the 1995 Florida squad's conference

Texas A&M 29, Alabama 24: Johnny Football and the Aggies Take Down No. 1

For all the off-season drama, NCAA investigations and arrests, once college football season does start, there are days and moments that make you remember why we all love the sport the way we do. Why, on its best day, there really is nothing better than college football.

One of those days was Saturday, and the final scoreboard in Tuscaloosa said more than the written word ever could:

	Texas A&M 29, Alabama 24.

A new college football power has arrived, right as another one was knocked off their perch at the top.

Simply put, Texas A&M-Alabama was one of the best games, of one of the most compelling seasons in recent college football memory. It had everything: Drama, back-and-forth battling, two teams who refused to quit.

It also had Johnny Football. And in the end, it was the Texas A&M quarterback who was the difference in the game. The Aggies had Johnny Manziel, and the Crimson Tide didn’t. The entire college football world has now been flipped on its head ...

Southern Mississippi 49, Houston 28: Bye BCS (And Coach Sumlin?)

If the CBS-Houston report that Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin will be named as the new Texas A&M head coach in the next 24 hours, his team's performance Saturday probably wouldn't be quite the exit that he had envisioned. The Cougars fell 49-28 to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in the Conference USA championship game.
In his postgame comments, Sumlin refuted the report, maintaining that he has yet to have any discussions with any other schools.
Sumlin has been Houston's head coach since 2007. He and and veteran quarterback Case Keenum rode a wave of success behind a high-powered spread offense. Now, if he moves on to A&M, the pieces seem to be in place for similar offensive success.

A&M recruited well under former Aggies head coach Mike Sherman. The Aggies return a solid group of quarterbacks (Jameill Showers, Luke Joeckel and Johnny Manziel) to go with another solid group of wide receivers (Ryan Swope, Malcome Kennedy, Uzoma Nwachukwu, Kenric ...
