Alabama-Missouri Preview

(AP) -- Nick Saban believes Alabama faces a unique challenge with a visit to SEC-newcomer Missouri on Saturday.

The test seems far greater for the Tigers, however, as they face the nation's No. 1 defense without their starting quarterback.

In their first trip to Faurot Field in 34 years, the top-ranked Crimson Tide try to frustrate redshirt freshman Corbin Berkstresser and prevent Missouri from picking up its first SEC victory.

The Tigers (3-3, 0-3) squandered a golden opportunity to notch their first SEC win last Saturday by falling 19-15 at home to perennial conference doormat Vanderbilt.

"This year, there's so much hype being in the SEC, and you've got all the outside voices telling you that you (stink) and you're not worthy," Missouri offensive tackle Elvis Fisher said.

"We know what we do here. We work our butts off. And then it's devastating to go out there and not put on your best performance."

Winning this week seems far less likely considering the Tigers

Tigers blow chance at first SEC victory

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- A botched Missouri extra-point snap and a bobbled punt attempt that led to a safety helped Vanderbilt beat Missouri 19-15 Saturday night, depriving the former Big 12 school of its first Southeastern Conference win.

Missouri (3-3, 0-3 Southeastern Conference) took an early 6-0 lead and kept Vanderbilt from gaining a first down until nearly nine minutes into the second quarter. Missouri couldn't muster much offense after an early injury to starting quarterback James Franklin, who sprained his left knee on a first-quarter run and didn't return.

Tiger Coach Gary Pinkel said Franklin injured his medial collateral ligament and, "will be out for a few weeks," including a home game next weekend against No. 1 Alabama.

Backup quarterback Corbin Berkstresser was just 9 of 30 for 189 yards, including an 85-yard scoring pass to Bud Sasser that cut a Commodores' fourth-quarter lead to 16-15. Missouri missed the extra point and a chance to tie on a bad snap.

Malcolm Mitchell:

“I expect Sanders (Commings) to come back and play his spot that he’s been playing for a couple of years,” Mitchell said. “I’m stepping into help. If the coaches want me to stay there, I’ll stay there.”
Georgia coach Mark Richt said that probably 10 days before the Buffalo game, Mitchell could be integrated again into a “few things” offensively.
“We’re not going to expect him to play every play, but I do want him to be available to play offense as early as the first game,” Richt said. “As the season rolls on, I think that will increase.”

Opportunity knocks:

Mitchell won't be getting 100 plays a game any time soon, but coach Mark Richt said he could be in for 60 plays during the first couple of games before getting to 70 or 80 when the weather cools.
