How much will Bartolo Colon make this season?

Everyone knows about the tiny sum that the Sox scooped up Colon for. A lot of people called it the best deal of the offseason in terms of the amount of money for pure potential. Well thanks to Gordon Edes and our friends at The Bottom Line Nation, we now have a little bit more in-depth numbers to work with:

"The former Cy Young Award winner gets $18,000 per month on his minor league deal, with his major league contract valued at $1.25 million. He gets $100,000 for each game started between 8 and 15, and $175,000 for each game between 15 and 20. He gets $240,000 for each game, 21-25, and $350,000 for 26-30. Along with awards bonuses, Colon has bonuses for games finished if he were to come in as a reliever ($250,000 for 25, $350,000 for 35, $400,000 for 40, and $450,000 for 45). He will get $225,000 for 30 days on the big league roster and an additional $225,000 for each 30 games after that up to 150. Colon also gets $250,000 if he is traded."

That looks like a lot of money to chumps like myself, but if you compare it to what 0-7 Barry Zito (around 14.5m this season) is making, we've got ourselves quite a steal. All Colon needs to do is keep us in games and get as many quality starts as he can because if he doesn't, Manny Delcarmen and David Aardsma are going to have their arms fall off.

Bartolo Colon dominates in minor league start, in line to pitch for Boston on Tuesday?

With Clay Buchholz being put on the disabled list with a broken fingernail, the Sox now have a hole in the rotation. Who better to fill it but Bartolo Colon?

Colon, an ex-Cy Young winner, looked absolutely dominating in his start for the Pawtucket Red Sox last night. How about these numbers?

- 6 innings pitched
- 1 hit
- 95 mph as his top velocity
- 15 first-strike pitches
- 64 total pitches, 48 for strikes

Colon to join Sox soon

Bartolo Colon's impressive start at AAA-Pawtucket on Thursday has earned him a trip to the bigs, in a couple weeks that is. Boston Red Sox manager, Terry Francona said the pitcher will join the team once he's ready. The team wants to stretch Colon out to about 100 pitches before calling him up. His last start he only threw 74. So essentially, he is in extended spring training but against much tougher opponents.

Bartolo Colon looks good in Pawtucket season opener

Bartolo Colon started the season opener for the Pawtucket Red Sox last night and I'll be honest when I say I was shocked at how good he looked. Sure, it was against minor league hitters BUT his fastball topped out at 96mph and he routinely hit 93-95 on the radar gun. Not only that but he located his pitches where he needed to, throwing 74 pitches with 45 going for strikes.

His final line was: 5IP 0ER 1H 1BB 5K. Looks good so far for a no-risk, high-reward situation.

Fast track to Boston?

Could Bartolo Colon be on the fast track to Fenway Park? The Boston Red Sox might, I repeat might, have found a no-risk, very high reward gem in this years free agent class. I've talked about Bartolo Colon before and said if he's healthy this could be a very good signing for the Sox. My original thinking, was a mid-season call up to help out for a struggling rookie or an injured starter. Well you know what, Colon might be pitching before Red Sox Nation a lot sooner then anyone thought.
