Gamecocks' Shaw to miss spring practice

South Carolina starting quarterback Connor Shaw will miss spring practice this year after having surgery on his left foot Friday.

Team physician, Dr. Jeffrey Guy, says Shaw's surgery for a left foot sprain was successful, but he would not recover in time to take part in spring workouts.

Shaw injured his foot in a victory over Tennessee on Oct. 27. After sitting out the final regular-season game against Clemson, Shaw played in the Outback Bowl and re-aggravated the injury in a 33-28 win over Michigan.

Guy says Shaw was expected to make a full recovery.

Freshman linebacker Cedrick Cooper had surgery on his left knee Friday. Guy says Cooper is also expected to fully recover and will also miss spring practices.

Shaw doesn't start at QB for No 13 South Carolina

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is not starting against No. 12 Clemson.

Shaw aggravated a sprained foot last week for the No. 13 Gamecocks and practiced sparingly before Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Sophomore Dylan Thompson got the start instead. It is Thompson's second start. He replaced Shaw earlier this year against East Carolina after the junior suffered a hairline fracture to his shoulder.

Thompson threw for 330 yards against the Pirates. Since then, his only significant time has been in the second half against UAB and the final two quarters against Florida.

Shaw ran for 107 yards and ran for a touchdown and threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns as the Gamecocks beat the Tigers 34-13 last season.

South Carolina QB Connor Shaw reinjures foot in win over Wofford.

South Carolina starting quarterback Connor Shaw reinjured his left foot in the early first quarter of the Gamecocks' 24-7 win over Wofford.

"Yeah, I'm a little banged up and retwisted it in the first series (of the game Saturday)," Shaw said.
"I was able to finish strong, but it bothered me throughout the game."

He completed 16 of his 21 passes for 122 yards, one touchdown and one
interception, but he didn't have a completion over 15 yards the entire
game.

Shaw also ran the ball 10 times on his bum foot but totaled just 18 yards; his long of the day was 11 yards.

Shaw was sacked four times and seemed to struggle getting on track early in the game."

The injury will reportedly not keep Shaw from missing the Gamecocks' regular season-ending game against in-state rival Clemson.

Shaw, No. 12 S.C. pull by Arkansas

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Connor Shaw threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score as No. 12 South Carolina beat Arkansas 38-20 on Saturday. Shaw was 15-of-23 for 279 yards for the Gamecocks (8-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference), who finished with six league wins for only the second time in 20 years in the SEC. Arkansas (4-6, 2-4) will now have to beat both Mississippi State and LSU to make a bowl game after starting the season No. 10 in the country. It was only the second win over the Razorbacks in the last seven games for the Gamecocks and it broke a three-game losing streak during which the Hogs embarrassed South Carolina by double-digits.

Shaw's passing enhances 6th-ranked Gamecocks

South Carolina's Connor Shaw is adding to his repertoire and increasing the sixth-ranked Gamecocks prospects in the Southeastern Conference.

Shaw connected on 20 straight passes and threw a pair of touchdowns in South Carolina's 31-10 victory over Missouri on Saturday. It was a major step forward for a junior quarterback mostly known for beating teams with his legs. If Shaw keeps passing like he did - and keeps opponents guessing whether he'll run or throw - it will give the Gamecocks' offense the added dimension at quarterback it has been missing most of coach Steve Spurrier's eight seasons.

South Carolina's defense was never in doubt and showed out again against the first-year SEC team. The Tigers managed 255 yards and didn't cross the goal line until the game's final seconds.

College football week 2: Tailgater picks of the week

Last week got us back in the swing of things as college football returned and the Tailgater crew resumed its gridiron speculation. The results varied (as a reminder, all picks are against the spread):
Zach Bigalke: 3-3
John Mitchell: 5-1
Matt Strobl: 3-3
While week 2 doesn’t offer the top tier matchups that opened the season, there are still a handful of compelling games. Here are our weekly selections along with some thoughts on who might emerge with wins.
*****
Week 2 Picks
This week offers some interesting betting lines and competitive inter-conference games among good (but not great) programs. We also have the SEC debut of the Texas A&M Aggies and the Missouri Tigers, who will looking to prove that they belong with the big boys by securing home victories against Florida and Georgia, respectively.
Here’s what the Tailgater crew is predicting. Rankings are according to the AP Top 25 poll. All times are eastern. All picks are against the spread as defined by Yahoo! Sports’ final lines.

Gamecocks QB Shaw returns to practice

Injured quarterback Connor Shaw was back at practice Wednesday for No. 9 South Carolina.

Shaw sustained a deep bone bruise in his throwing shoulder in last Thursday night's 17-13 victory at Vanderbilt. He hadn't practiced since the game and coach Steve Spurrier said his status for Saturday's home opener against East Carolina (1-0) was wait-and-see.

However, Shaw appeared calm and in no pain as he left the team's practice fields. He said he felt OK and threw passes at the workout. Shaw was not made available for questions.

Shaw came back in after his injury and led South Carolina (1-0) on a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that put the Gamecocks ahead for good. Shaw finished with 92 yards rushing. He was also 7-of-11 passing for 67 yards.

Steve Spurrier says Connor Shaw is having trouble lifting his arm

*And all Gamecock fans groan*

Connor Shaw was 7 of 11 for 67 yards against Vanderbilt on Thursday night. Shaw was hit towards the end of the 2nd quarter on a short run. He was checked out on the sideline, but was later shuffled to the locker room for further examination. Shaw did return to the game and replaced his backup Dylan Thompson, who was 0 for 3 while in the game, but was slow getting up after every hit he took and in visible pain on the sideline. Shaw did stick it out and led the Gamecocks on the game winning drive later in the quarter.
“It’s just painful for him,” Spurrier said. “And he has trouble lifting his arm right now so it’s pretty hard to play quarterback.”
Spurrier said that Shaw “won’t play if he’s not healthy” against East Carolina next week.
The Gamecocks should be pretty worried, without a healthy Shaw their offense struggled massively even with Marcus Lattimore back.

Connor Shaw: South Carolina QB Not Expected to Miss Any Time

After injuring his throwing shoulder Thursday night at Vandy, South Carolina starter Connor Shaw appears OK to go next week against East Carolina.
In their 17-13 win over Vanderbilt, the South Carolina Gamecocks used a very Steve Spurrier-like three quarterbacks. However, it was for somewhat un-Spurrier-like reasons. Shaw appeared to injure his shoulder in the first half and was seen receiving treatment on the sideline. At one point, it seemed there was a chance he wouldn’t return for the second half.
He did, and finished the game completed 7 of 11 passes for 67 yards and an interception. He also ran 14 times for 92 yards as a part of a 205-yard rushing night for the Gamecocks. The other two quarterbacks, Dylan Thompson and Seth Strickland, were a combined 0-for-4 throwing the ball.

This is a completely backwards story for a Spurrier team. Usually, losing a quarterback for his teams means a dent in the passing game, but Shaw is a dual-threat guy (though some would say his passing ...

Fragility of title race confronts South Carolina

NASHVILLE The fragility of a conference championship fell squarely on the right shoulder of Connor Shaw. He walked away with the game ball, his South Carolina teammates walked away with perspective.

When Shaw left for the locker room right on the cusp of halftime, grimacing and clutching his right arm, a collective breath was drawn. A defender's helmet had found a soft spot in his shoulders padding. He said he couldn't feel his arm.

This was the No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks, projected to be one of the premier teams in the Southeastern Conference race, a Steve Spurrier-led bunch that puts up points and laughs and makes sly remarks about opponents. And yet, the scoreboard read 10-10 and the Head Ball Coach's signal caller didn't look good. Neither did their title aspirations, whether they be of the league or national variety.

"Everybody kinda got uptight," sophomore tackle Kelcy Quarles said.

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw has returned to the game against Vanderbilt after bruising his throwing shoulder and having to go to the locker room for evaluation.

The junior left the field late in the second quarter after a 2-yard gain to the Vanderbilt 46. He walked to the sideline holding his right arm close to his body and grimaced when examined on the sideline. He returned with 6:02 left in the third quarter and Vanderbilt leading 13-10.

Shaw came in having won eight of his nine career starts. He was 3 of 6 for 23 yards passing and ran nine times for 59 yards before being hurt.

Shaw, Vanderbilt thrust into the spotlight

Connor Shaws window of opportunity widened as he took the field against Vanderbilt last season, his first taste of SEC football. He inherited a nightmare and a 21-3 lead. South Carolinas starter, Stephen Garcia, had just thrown his fourth interception of the game the previous series a cardinal sin under coach Steve Spurrier and was benched for what must have felt like the 74th time in his tumultuous career.

So in came the sophomore from Flowery Branch, Ga. Shaw kept his head down, made no mistakes and handed the ball off to Marcus Lattimore, the ultimate crutch for a first-time college quarterback. His final line: eight yards passing, 14 yards rushing.

South Carolina held the score at 21-3 for the win, and two games later Shaw was named the starter and posted an 8-1 record to close the season.

Connor, I think, is a better player than he was last year, and he was pretty good at the end of the year, Spurrier said in the weekly SEC coaches teleconference. As we all know, in the last four games his quarterb

South Carolina QB Connor Shaw slams Under Armour cleats.

Connor Shaw

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw has found a way to cause controversy in Columbia, SC that even his predecessor, Stephen Garcia, couldn't even think of. Shaw make a somewhat negative comment about the cleats provided by the Gamecocks uniform supplier, Under Armor on Twitter Thursday night. The tweet has since been taken down, but its contents were preserved.

"3rd time the sole of my Under Armour shoes have completely busted. And we wonder why so many people have “freak” foot injuries on the team.”

Well, that's certainly a new way to get Steve Spurrier hot and bothered. Under Armour probably isn't too amused by Shaw's comments, either. I expect the company will be sending Shaw one of these new Bryce Harper-inspired t-shirts very soon.
