Did Robert Stiegtlitz head butt his way to victory over Arthur Abraham?

When I checked my boxing news on Sunday morning, I was shocked at the coverage of the Stieglitz vs. Abraham II outcome. True, Abraham losing by TKO4 was a surprising upset in a fight where virtually no one favored Robert Stieglitz, even though the latter German was fighting before his hometown crowd. Even so, what left me stunned was how the coverage made it sound as if Abraham was fairly pummeled and whipped into submission, and that this alone was responsible for the stoppage. The assertion is so blatantly wrong that I wonder how many of the people making it actually bothered to watch the four rounds of the fight!
Stieglitz Turned Dirty

As I predicted, Abraham started the fight busier than is his usual want, no doubt more comfortable and familiar with Stieglitz after cleanly defeating him in their previous encounter. That was the limit of his adjustments for the rematch: getting busier sooner. Stieglitz's adjustments for Abraham, such as they were, wer...

Stieglitz shocks Arthur Abraham, scores 4th round TKO victory

Former WBO champ Robert Stieglitz (44-3, 25 KOs), a Russian native who fights out of Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, regained his world title by avenging his title loss to two-division world champion "King" Arthur Abraham (36-4, 28 KOs), a native of Armenia who lives in Berlin, in a rematch of their first fight from last summer. Stieglitz scored a shocking TKO victory in the 4th round of the fight. Check out the photos, video and recap of the results right here.

Robert Stieglitz is the new champion of the WBO super middleweight. Before 7,000 spectators in the sold-Arena Magdeburg GETEC he defeated former champion Arthur Abraham by technical knockout at the start of the fourth round. Achieved by a blow on the left eyelid swelling effect of the defending champions at the end of the second round made for a surprisingly quick end.
But first things first: Abraham started, as already known from his previous fights, rather subdued in the battle. Waiting on the actions...

Stieglitz reclaims WBO belt

Robert Stieglitz reclaimed his WBO super middleweight title from fellow German Arthur Abraham on a technical knockout after three rounds on Saturday night.

Roared on by the crowd in his adopted hometown, the Russian-born Stieglitz took the fight to the defending champion from the start, opening a cut above Abraham's left eye in the second round and leaving it swollen shut by the end of the third.

The ring doctor stepped in to end the bout before the fourth could begin.

The 31-year-old Stieglitz improves to 44-3 with 25 knockouts after regaining the belt he lost to Abraham by unanimous decision in Berlin in August.

Abraham, 33, who was born in Armenia but fights out of Berlin, dropped to 36-4 (28 KOs).

Abraham-Stieglitz workout photos & quotes

The biggest shopping mall of Magdeburg, Germany played host for today's public workout ahead of Saturday'big fight night at the GETEC-Arena. The main event of the evening will see current WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs) take on Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) for the second time. Check out a collection of photos, quotes and notes from the public workout session below.

The excitement of the fans was a close resemblance to the fights of Sven Ottke, who celebrated some of his greatest victories in the east of Germany. More than 1,000 people came to see the boxers up close and were more than impressed with the skills they put on display.
First to step into the ring inside the mall was former champion Robert Stieglitz, who once more made his intention of getting revenge on Abraham clear. However, the challenger was keen not to give too much away and only went one round with his coach Dirk Dzemski while hitting the pads.

Abraham vs. Stieglitz II final presser quotes & photos

There can only be one winner, and that is Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs). At least, that is the opinion of the WBO Champion himself and his team. The world title rematch between Abraham and Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) is just around the corner and unsurprisingly both camps are convinced that they have the edge over their opposition. At today’s press conference, in Magdeburg, Germany, the protagonists of the world title bout as well as their trainers and the WBO's current number one heavyweight contender, Robert Helenius (18-0, 11 KOs), gave their statements ahead of Saturday night.

Arthur Abraham, WBO Super Middleweight Champion: I am very excited to be fighting in the city of Magdeburg. My first fight here was when Sven Ottke retired and the atmosphere was amazing. The crowd was even doing the Mexican wave which you normally only get during soccer games. I have never seen anything like that outside of Magdeburg. I can only say one thing about the fight. We won the first fi...

Q&A with Robert Stieglitz: Abraham has just been borrowing my belt, I’ll win it back

Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) feels very confident. The 31-year-old super-middleweight will face off with Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs) in their rematch on March 23. Stieglitz is hoping to avenge his loss on points back in August of last year when the pair meets up for a
second time at the GETEC-Arena in Magdeburg.
But according to Stieglitz himself, their next fight will be a whole different story and he will ensure that the WBO Title finds its way back to Magdeburg. In fact, he believes that Abraham has simply been borrowing the belt which will once again be his own.
Robert Stieglitz, you lost your WBO Title against Arthur Abraham on August 25. Now you had some time to reflect on the fight. What are your thoughts?
Robert Stieglitz: I’m not the kind of person to look back and dwell on the past - I always have my sight on what lies ahead. Of course, I have mixed feelings when I reflect the happenings of that night. Although I did lose on points and consequently my title, I do beli...

Q&A with King Arthur Abraham, as he readies for Stieglitz rematch

March 23 will be another glorious day for Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs), or so he hopes. That's when he will meet Robert Stieglitz (43-3, 24 KOs) for their rematch inside the GETEC-Arena in Magdeburg, Germany. The 33-year-old Abraham captured the WBO super middleweight world championship last August when he beat Stieglitz on points in his hometown of Berlin. This time the champion is making his way to his opponent's backyard.
In the following interview, he reveals what kind of performance can be expected.

Mr. Abraham, the last time people saw you putting on the gloves you beat Frenchman Mehdi Bouadla by technical knockout on December 15. Were you satisfied with your first title defense at super-middleweight?

Curtis "Showtime" Stevens, 22-3, 16 KOs, was training for his upcoming fight with New Haven, CT middleweight Elvin Ayala, 26-5-1, 12 KOs, when he read what Ayala had to say about him. Many of Ayala's comments sounded like typical pre-fight trash talk, but one remark struck a nerve in the New Yorker.

"He said that I'm no Arthur Abraham," Stevens recalled. "Well, I got news for him, I'm a bigger puncher than Abraham. I'm going to wear him down from round one to round ten. If I catch his ass early, it's going to be over for him. I believe he has to say things like he did to give himself motivation and confidence. So by telling a reporter that I'm nothing like Abraham, he was just psyching himself up."
Stevens added,"He (Ayala) said he wasn't ready when he took the fight with Abraham, well he's had alot of time to prepare for me, so there better be no excuses when I beat him."

Arthur Abraham, Mateusz Masternak & Jack Culcay all victorious in Nuremburg

WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham ends the year with a bang. Abraham proved that he is right where he belongs by defeating Mehdi Bouadla 8th round TKO in Nuremberg, Germany on Saturday night. The 7,000 fans in attendance witnessed a great performance by the titlist, who presented them with an early Christmas gift.

Abraham began the fight forceful. The prodigy of coach Ulli Wegner pressurized Bouadla right from the get go, just like he did in his fight against Robert Stieglitz on August 25. Powerful jabs found their way through the defense of the French challenger. Right towards the end of round one the champion let loose a salvage of heavy blows, which got Bouadla into trouble and the crowd rising from their seats and chanting Abraham's name.
But the hard hitting titleholder did not only rely on his power and high volume of punches. By constantly switching his target from head to body, he was eager to keep the challenger guessing as to where he would attempt to h...

Abraham beats Bouadla to retain WBO belt

Arthur Abraham of Germany successfully defended his WBO super middleweight title with a technical knockout win over Mehdi Bouadla of France in the eighth round on Saturday.

Abraham dominated until American referee Mark Nelson stepped in to stop the one-sided contest 2 minutes, 11 seconds into the round, when Bouadla's vision was impeded by streaming blood from repeated left and right blows.

''This is where I started boxing. To be here now, in front of 10,000 people as world champion - there's no better feeling,'' Abraham said after his first defense of the title he won on points from Robert Stieglitz in Berlin in August.

''We have only one recipe - to win. But I have to say that he never gave up. He kept going to the end, and he punched hard. 2012 was a great year. I became world champion. I'm very happy.''

Abraham (35-3, 28 KO), an Armenia-born German, had been in such control that he received a telling off from his coach after the fourth round for his gung-ho

Arthur Abraham-Mehdi Bouadla presser photos, quotes

Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KOs) is looking forward to the first defense of his WBO Super-Middleweight title. The 32-year-old, who dethroned the previous Champion Robert Stieglitz in Berlin in August, returns to the ring at the
ARENA NUERNBERGER VERSICHERUNG on December 15 where he will meet challenger Mehdi Bouadla (26-4, 11 KOs) from France.
During the first official press conference on Tuesday, Abraham was seemingly relaxed. “It is a great feeling to be a world champion again. The title has not changed me as a person; I am still the same Arthur Abraham as I was before. But being in possession of the belt is important to me, I sleep a lot better.”

After winning the IBF Middleweight World Championship back in 2005 and ten successful defenses of the belt, it took a while before Abraham got back to the top of the game. “It is very special for me to defend the WBO title in Nuremberg. I spent a lot of my youth in Franconia and it is where I learnt how to box. Back in the day, I used to ...

Abraham wins by unanimous decision

Former middleweight champ, Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KOs) is now a two-division world titlist after taking the WBO super middleweight belt from defending champ, Robert Stieglitz (42-3, 23 KOs) via twelve round unanimous decision on Saturday by scores of 116-112, 116-112, and 115-113.

Abraham came out quicker than usual and immediately made his heavier hands a factor against Stieglitz, bothering the defending champ on several occasions. The Armenia-born German star also focused more on straight punches, rather than his trademark wide swinging bombs as well as a more consistent flow of action than has usually been the case.

Stieglitz was never blown out of the water, but his face was fairly battered by the later rounds and it was clear that his solid, but rather pedestrian skill set was simply not good enough to handle a determined, focused Abraham who was, possibly, one loss away from the end of the line as a legitimate main stage fighter.

Now, despite high-profile losses to Andre Ward, Carl Froch, and Andre
