Preseason countdown: No. 7 S. Carolina

South Carolina could be closer to playing for a national championship than you might think.

Considering the long and lousy history of the program, last season's 11-2 run was the best year ever for Gamecocks football, going 5-0 in division play.

Spurrier is taking care of home putting just enough of a fence around South Carolina - while keeping Clemson at arm's length - to keep superior talents like defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, running back Marcus Lattimore, offensive tackle Brandon Shell, defensive tackle Kelcy Quarters and wide receiver Shaq Roland. These aren't just nice players to build around; these are future top NFL draft picks who could've gone anywhere. Not that long ago, players like those would've been mortal locks to be off to whatever the hot SEC school was at the moment, but now South Carolina has become one of those schools.

South Carolina Gamecocks Football Field Report: Florida Edition

South Carolina concluded its home SEC schedule by beating Florida 17-12.
Breaking it down…1st Quarter…Florida received the opening kickoff just like last year. Unlike last year, they did not return it for a touchdown. On the second offensive play Stephon Gilmore blitzed and stripped the ball from Gator quarterback John Brantley. Devin Taylor recovered the fumble on the Florida 35. The offense couldn't do anything positive with the ball and turned it over on downs after losing a yard. The defense forced a quick three and out giving the ball back to the offense on the USC 40. On third down Shaw threw to Jeffrey late, and the ball was intercepted. The Florida offense ran for large chunks of yardage and gained a first down at the 2. The defense stopped two runs for negative yardage and tackled a receiver short of the goal line on third down. Florida settled for a field goal and a 3-0 lead. South Carolina's offense found a better rhythm and started to move the ball. T...

Breaking it Down...1st Quarter...South Carolina won the toss and elected to kick the ball. Arkansas received the kick and moved into South Carolina territory. The Hogs bogged down and had to settle for a 44 yard field goal. The South Carolina offense then went three and out, and Arkansas again moved the ball into field goal range, but the 45 yard attempt missed wide left. South Carolina's offense then got on track. The Gamecocks moved 72 yards on 9 plays to take the lead 7-3. Brandon Wilds ran the ball in on a sweep to the left side from 4 yards out. A quieted home crowd quickly came back to life when Dennis Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and a 10-7 Hog lead. The Gamecock offense responded by going three and out.
