Lil Wiz and Hulk: A Look at the Oakland Raiders Offensive Line

Last season’s disaster experiment with Greg Knapp’s zone blocking scheme turned the Oakland Raiders once vaunted running game into a joke. Not only did Darren McFadden look like a shell-of-himself but the young stars on the offensive line Jared Veldheer and Stefen Wisniewski looked lost. With new offensive coordinator Greg Olsen reinstalling the power run blocking scheme the Raiders run game should revert back to the way it was.

Jared Veldheer Twitter Page (Veldheer68)

During his first two years in the NFL, Jared Veldheer looked like a perennial pro-bowler at left tackle. The 6’8 Veldheer had the size and athleticism to not only protect the blind side but he also could open up holes for the running back. Veldheer’s dominance was important to the Raiders offense because he was able to make up for the weakness at right tackle. Like everyone else on the offensive line last year Veldheer seemed to regress under the zone blocking scheme. Most Raiders fans have seen the picture of the m...

With the official free agency period approaching quickly, the Oakland Raiders continue to work on clearing salary cap space. After guard Mike Brisiel agreed to a restructured contract on Monday, today was Tyvon Branch’s turn to accept a new deal, as reported by Contra Costa Times’ Steve Corkran.
The Raiders restructure Mike Brisiel

The Raiders made their first significant off season move today when the team reached an agreement to a restructure of veteran Mike Brisiel’s contract.

Brisiel, the team’s most expensive free agent pickup a year ago underwhelmed at right guard although GM Reggie McKenzie indicated that he thought Brisiel might have been hampered more by an ankle injury that required him to have after-season surgery than by a lack of talent.

The terms of the restructure are not clear but what was disclosed, by Steve Corkran of Contra Costa Times, is that Brisiel’s cap number for this year was reduced from $4.35M down to $1.35M.

As a 7 year veteran, the absolute minimum a one year contract that Brisiel would negotiate this year would pay him $840,000.00 per year so this contract is not a bad cap hit for the Raiders at all.

What this means for the Raiders long term is up in the air – it depends on the terms of the restructure. It’s likely the base salary dropped and Brisiel converted ...

Brisiel restructures contract with Raiders

Oakland Raiders offensive lineman Mike Brisiel has restructured his contract to give the team salary cap relief.

Brisiel converted $3 million of his $4.35 million base salary into a guaranteed roster bonus paid next week, agent Jeff Sperbeck said in an email. The restructuring was first reported by the Bay Area News Group.

Brisiel is in the second year of a $20 million, five-year contract. He struggled in his first year with Oakland and underwent major ankle surgery in the offseason to fix a problem that hindered him during the season.

Brisiel was brought in for his experience as a zone blocker, but Oakland is switching to a more power-based blocking scheme this year under new coordinator Greg Olson.

Losses of Winston, Brisiel leave holes in O-line

HOUSTON The concern over the right side of the Texans' offensive line has yet to reach its crescendo. With one week of organized team activities plus mini camp and training camp left to complete, ample time remains to fretfully analyze the losses of Eric Winston and Mike Brisiel.

It was a testament to Winston and Brisiel that their departures triggered such widespread panic. Winston had started 87 consecutive games at right tackle before being released and subsequently signed by the Chiefs. Brisiel previously shared reps with Antoine Caldwell at guard before ultimately claiming the starting job outright and shining alongside Winston. Brisiel signed with the Raiders as a free agent.

In recent years the Texans presented the camaraderie of their linemen as an asset, therefore significant alterations to that unit were rightfully greeted with skepticism. That Caldwell and Rashad Butler, the presumed heir to Winston, are familiar should assuage some anxiety.

"The good thing about it is me and Rashad ha

Raiders To Host Texans Free Agent OG Mike Brisiel

On the heels of releasing veteran right guard Cooper Carlisle on Wednesday, the Raiders lined up a visit with free agent Mike Brisiel. Brisiel, who turned 29 today, has spent all six of his NFL seasons with the Texans. He started 47 games the past five seasons, including 13 last season. It’s possible that the Raiders will bring back Carlisle at some point, just at a cheaper salary than the $3 million he was slated to earn in 2012. In the interim, the Raiders are checking out other options. Source: Oakland Tribune Attached Thumbnails

Contract Talk: Mike Brisiel

One of the symbols of the Houston Texans season in 2011, Mike Brisiel won the respect of his teammates and fans for his play in the division clinching game on a fractured leg. Brisiel who has battle for his NFL career and a spot on the Texans roster, makes Brisiel one of the team favorites.

When Brisiel came to Houston in 2007 he was backup lineman looking to stick in Houston, and then he learned the Texans zone system and went to being a spot starter to a full-time starter for the Texans in 2011.

It was pretty apparent to what Brisiel meant to the Texans when he came back in the first playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals when he was opening holes on the right side for Arian Foster’s big day. More importantly was he solidified the pass protection for T.J. Yates, and with the Texans offensive line continuity is important.

At the age of 28, the Texans don’t want to lose an important piece of their offensive line. He still has some good football left in the tank, and could...

Texans Hope to Get Guard Mike Brisiel Back for the Playoffs

PFW reports that the Texans are hoping that they can get guard Mike Brisiel back in time for the postseason.
The Texans hope to get ORG Mike Brisiel back in time for the playoff run after he suffered a broken leg in the Week 14 win in Cincinnati. But S Danieal Manning, who missed only three games with the same injury, was an exception — not the rule — in making such a speedy recovery. It could be a much taller order for a much bigger man, Brisiel. Backup Antoine Caldwell, a former third-rounder with starting experience, should not be a huge drop-off from Brisiel, we hear. Houston loves Brisiel because he is the ultimate tough guy. “He would run through a wall if the coaching staff asked him to,” according to a source on the scene. “But Caldwell is actually a better athlete.”
