Despite Early Exit, Coliseum Was True Advantage for New York Islanders

Photo credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Nassau Coliseum was quite different Tuesday than it had been three days prior. The ice was gone and instead of fans there were only workers. There was no cheering anymore, just the sound of silence.
But as the New York Islanders gathered their things and said goodbye to the 2013 season, they fondly remembered one last time the excitement and adrenaline that they received from the fans at the Coliseum.
“I’ve heard a lot about it over the three years I’ve been here and I’ve never really seen it,” Matt Martin said of the atmosphere for games 3, 4 and 6. “The last three home games and in the playoffs, it was just electrifying. It made a huge difference for us I think. It turned into the funnest rink in the league to play in.”
Other members of the team were quick to comment on how exciting it was to play in the building.
“The best experience I’ve ever been a part of,” David Ullstrom said. “I’ve played some juniors or something,

Another Cut Tendon Injury

from the PostStar,

The Sound Tigers won 4-1 behind two goals from David Ullstrom, but the Phantoms also lost left wing Eric Wellwood to a severe lower leg injury in the second period.

Wellwood fell into the boards on a penalty kill and caught the back of his right leg with his own skate, cutting tendons. He skated to the bench, then off the ice with the trainer while the puck was still in play, leaving a trail of blood. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for surgery.

“They’ll obviously close up the wound with the vascular injury and he’ll have surgery again (Monday) morning if there’s any need to have surgery pertaining to the tendons,” head coach Terry Murray said in a phone interview. “I don’t think anyone really saw it. It was away from the play. In conversation, everyone figures it was an accident that happened to himself. The play was already in the offensive zone and this happened in the neutral zone, so we’re not sure exactly what took place.”

Dee Karl: Ullstrom Back in Line-up

David Ullstrom's game winning goal last night for Bridgeport against the Falcons earned him the right to return to the NY Islanders line-up today. However Nino Niederreiter's team leaiding 25th goal wasn't enough to earn him a call-up.

Jesse Joensuu will make the trip to Florida with the team and Michael Grabner has officially been placed on IR as of March 10th.

Islanders Add Size to Line-up Tonight

In an effort to add size to their line-up, Arthur Staple at Newsday reports that the Islanders have replaced David Ullstrom with 6' 1", 225lb Eric Boulton for tonight's game vs. the Rangers.

Boulton is scoreless in five games this season, while Ullstrom has 2g, 3a in 12 games.

Capuano wants more size in lineup tonight, felt #Isles were outmuscled last week here vs. #NYR. Would expect Ullstrom back vs. NJ on Sat.
	— Arthur Staple (@StapeNewsday) February 14, 2013

...please don't tell me this is the reason Boyle is in the Rangers lineup over Kreider tonight.

...got to love the Islanders. Team is struggling to score goals and they take one of the few guys with multiple goals out of their line-up for someone who hasn't been on the scoresheet this season. Nice work.

Lightning rally ends just short vs. Islanders

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- David Ullstrom scored early in the third period to give the Islanders a big lead, and New York held off the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 Monday.

Coach Jack Capuano returned to the Islanders and guided them to their first win of the season. He missed the opening-night loss to New Jersey on Saturday because of surgery to remove a kidney stone.

Michael Grabner, Matt Martin and Kyle Okposo scored in a 12-minute span of the second period to put the Islanders ahead 3-0. Ullstrom gave New York a four-goal lead 91 seconds into the final period.

Martin St. Louis, Benoit Pouliot and Steven Stamkos scored in a 5-minute stretch, pulling Tampa Bay within a goal with 12 minutes left. The Lightning couldn't get anything else past Evgeni Nabokov, who stopped 23 of 26 shots.

Anders Lindback allowed all four of New York's goals on 44 shots.

For the first 40 minutes, New York was much tighter defensively than it was in the 2-1 loss to the Devils. The Islanders took away the middle of the ice, for

Around the Farm: Whale defense fails in loss to Bridgeport

Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5, Connecticut Whale 2
Bridgeport, CT, December 26, 2012 – Nino Niederreiter scored two goals, and David Ullstrom had a goal and three assists, to lead the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Connecticut Whale Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Johan Sundstrom also contributed three assists for Bridgeport, and Casey Cizikas had a pair of helpers. Marek Hrivik had a goal and an assist for the Whale, and Chad Kolarik had two assists.
It took Bridgeport only 63 seconds to open the scoring, as good early forechecking pressure led to Niederreiter’s first goal, which came on a high shot from the left-wing side of the slot. Niederreiter scored again from almost the same spot at 7:04, on a rebound after Ullstrom got a couple of tries at a loose puck.
The Bridgeport power play made it a 3-0 advantage at 11:45, as John Persson found Colin McDonald with a pinpoint cross-slot pass and McDonald one-timed the puck in from along the goal line on the left-wing ...

Montoya, Ullstrom to Practice; Poulin Could be Called Up

After a poor finish to a three game road trip, the Islanders may be getting some good news.
Goaltender Al Montoya and forward David Ullstrom are scheduled to practice with the team today according to Newsday’s Arthur Staple. Both have been out since December 21 with concussions suffered during a game against the Winnipeg Jets.
According to the report, Montoya will not be ready in time for Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings at Nassau Coliseum and the team may call up Bridgeport goaltender Kevin Poulin. Poulin has been a roll as of late, posting three consecutive shutouts for the Islanders farm team and set an organizational record.
Anders Nilsson has played back up to Evgeni Nabokov for the past two weeks due to injuries to Montoya and Rick Dipietro. Nilsson’s only start of the season was against the Pittsburg Penguins back on November 21. He allowed 5 goals against in game remembered for the return of injured Penguins start Sidney Crosby.
Nabokov has started eight cons...

Ullstrom and Four other Islanders Score in 5-1 victory

It was a memorable night for Tim Wallace and David Ullstrom as they both contributed in the Islanders 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Wallace was credited with his first point as an Islander and Ullstrom scored his first career NHL goal at the 3:39 mark of the third period.
The Islanders came into the game without Jay Pandolfo and Michael Grabner, who are both sidelined with respective injuries. The injuries did not prevent them from rolling over the Lightning in a game that saw five different Islander players score.
It was the Lightning who opened up the scoring with a goal from Martin St Louis at the 6:55 mark of the first period. It would take the Islanders seven minutes after the Tampa goal to answer back. John Tavares scored from in front of the net to tie the game at one. Four minutes later, Matt martin made it a 2-1 lead scoring on a feed from Tim Wallace behind the net. The point would be Wallace’s first since January 1, 2009 and his first as a New York Islander....
