Gamecocks Basketball: Frank Martin Cleans House

Make no mistake about it, this is now Coach Frank Martin's basketball team at South Carolina now. He has "his players" in place for the 2013-14 season as he pretty much cleaned house to make room for his new recruits.

Gone is Damien Leonard, Eric Smith, RJ Slawson and Brian Richardson. They will be missed but this is best for the program. With four players leaving, in addition to seniors Lakeem Jackson and LaShay Page, Carolina will add seven newcomers for the upcoming season.

Anyone who follows Gamecock basketball knew this was bound to happen. You could see it on Coach Martin's face this past season, he hated losing and the team just did not have his style of play.

This is a new chapter for USC basketball and one we welcome. We are excited for the future of the Gamecocks basketball program.

South Carolina at Florida game preview

Game time: 8 p.m. ETTV: SEC Network
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida center Pat Young knows something is coming.
It could be a speech. It could be a video session. It could be a grueling practice.
Following an eight-game winning streak, a dominant start in the SEC and the program's highest ranking in nearly six years, Young figures coach Billy Donovan will do something to get his team's attention.
"I know coach Donovan's going to humble us," Young said Monday. "He's going to find something to make sure we don't get too lifted up on this attention that we're getting now. We want to be great for being recognized as a good team, but we want to make it all the way. We want to win it all. Then we'll finally be satisfied with what we've got."
Florida moved up four spots to No. 4 in the latest AP poll, jumped to sixth in the latest Ratings Percentage Index and has been projected a top seed in the NCAA tournament.

SEC Power Rankings: Florida still at No. 1

No Southeastern Conference team has gotten closer than 17 points in six games against Florida, which enters this week ranked No. 4 in the country, following two more blowout victories.

Ole Miss rises to No. 16 nationally, but the Rebels had to earn both victories last week. No. 17 Missouri seems to have righted the ship with two good wins.

But after that, several teams are eagerly positioning for NCAA tournament worthiness in a year when the SEC might only get three teams get into The Big Dance.

That includes defending national champion Kentucky, which lost at Alabama and finds itself currently on the outside looking into the NCAA tourney, according to several noted bracketologists.

Here's an updated look at the SEC Power Rankings:

1. Florida (16-2, 6-0)

While his numbers don't jump off the page, junior guard Scottie Wilbekin was named league player of the week nonetheless. He matched a career-best 17 points versus Georgia and then had 13 points and nine assists in a 35-point blowout at Miss

South Carolina 75, Arkansas 54

Brian Richardson tied his career high with 20 points and South Carolina matched its total Southeastern Conference wins from a year ago with a 75-54 victory over Arkansas on Saturday.

The Gamecocks (12-7, 2-4 SEC) trailed by 12 less than five minutes into the game, but turned things around with a 40-11 run the rest of the period. Richardson was a big reason, scoring 11 points off three 3-pointers to push South Carolina to its first SEC victory of 20-points or more in seven seasons.

Arkansas (12-7, 3-3) could never get closer than 14 points in the second half as it lost its third straight league game on the road this season. Marshawn Powell had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Razorbacks, who had come in off a 26-point victory at home Wednesday night over Mississippi State.

Arkansas' leading scorer coming, B.J. Young, was held to seven points - nine fewer than his average - on 3 of 12 shooting.

Bruce Ellington added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting for South Carolina.

Craig Sword scored 18 points, Roquez Johnson added 14 and Mississippi State edged South Carolina 56-54 on Wednesday in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Mississippi State (6-7) first-year coach Rick Ray won his SEC debut. Sword shot 6 of 11 from the field and had a dunk with 26 seconds left that provided enough separation for the victory.

South Carolina's Bruce Ellington and Brian Richardson both missed contested 3-pointers in the final seconds. The Gamecocks (10-4) couldn't overcome 24 turnovers. Richardson led South Carolina with 20 points.

The Gamecocks took a 50-44 lead with 5:25 remaining, but the Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run that provided the momentum to get the win.

Mississippi State won despite missing all 10 of its 3-point attempts. The Gamecocks were 8 of 21 from long range.

South Carolina looked like it might pull out a win, but the Bulldogs' pressure defense forced the Gamecocks into consistently bad decisions late. South Carolina's turnovers fueled seve

Lakeem Jackson tied a season-high with 16 points and three other South Carolina players scored in double figures in an 80-69 win over South Carolina State on Saturday.

Brian Richardson finished with 15 points, Breton Williams had 14 points and Damien Leonard added 10 for the Gamecocks (10-3), who played for the second straight game with eight scholarship players.

Senior LaShay Page was dismissed from the team on Friday with an academic issue. Freshman Michael Carrera missed his second straight game with a hip injury and Bruce Ellington has yet to rejoin the team since scoring the game-winning touchdown in South Carolina's victory over Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

The Gamecock's 10 wins match their total from a season ago. It's the first time since the 2008-09 season that South Carolina has won double-digit nonconference games.

Matthew Hezekiah scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for South Carolina State (4-10).

Brian Richardson tied a career-high with 17 points and Damien Leonard added a season-high 15 points to lead South Carolina to a 76-60 victory over Presbyterian Saturday.

South Carolina (9-3) trailed only after the opening basket and won a season-high fourth straight despite missing three players from its lineup.

The Blue Hose (2-11) trimmed a 20-point second half deficit to nine points, but a second technical foul on coach Greg Nibert turned the tide back to the Gamecocks. Richardson made both technical foul shots and 1 of 2 free throws on the foul call that Nibert was arguing.

That was the beginning of 11 straight points by South Carolina. Mindaugas Kacinas followed Richardson's missed free throw with a layup to push the lead back to 14 points before the Blue Hose had possession again.

Kacinas added 13 points for South Carolina. Jordan Downing led Presbyterian with 19 points before fouling out.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series. Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days. Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.
We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order. We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.
How the South Carolina Gamecocks lured Frank Martin away from Kansas State is still one of the great mysteries of this college basketball off-season. Martin will certainly have his work cut out for him since the Gamecocks lost three starters from last year’s team that finished dead last in the SEC.

Cooke lifts South Carolina over SC Upstate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Malik Cooke scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as South Carolina rallied past South Carolina Upstate 72-66 on Saturday. It was the Gamecocks' third consecutive win and fifth in the past six games.

South Carolina (7-6) moved above .500 for the first time since starting the season with a 75-50 win over Western Carolina. Not that this victory came easy.

The Gamecocks lost a 12-point lead and trailed SC Upstate (8-6) 47-46 on Ricardo Glenn's layup with 13:02 to go. But Cooke answered with two foul shots and South Carolina did not trail again.

Glenn's foul shot drew the Spartans within 68-66 with 45 seconds to go. But again it was Cooke who pulled the Gamecocks out of the fire the next time down the court, tipping back a missed shot to extend the margin with 31 seconds left.

Torrey Craig led SC Upstate with 20 points.

Brenton Williams had 11 points and RJ Slawson 10 for South Carolina.
