Kane But Not Able

Dammit, I’m going to shoe-horn in the bad puns while I still can.
The formality that was supposed to be DeAndre Kane’s transfer to Pitt for as a graduate transfer, now is not.
However, the 6-foot-4 guard, a Pittsburgh native, did not wind up pulling the trigger, whether it was due to the fact that Panthers coach Jamie Dixon was non-committal about taking him at the time, or whether Kane just wasn’t enamored with the visit.
Now Kane told CBSSports.com that he is still open, with both Pittsburgh still under consideration and Memphis also in pursuit.
From my own perspective, I’m not exactly broken up by the possibility that Kane may not be coming to Pitt.

The thing everyone wants to know is why. Did Kane not hear the sweet nothings of assurances of how much he will be featured? Was it that Dixon started to review what went down in Huntington, WV and get a little nervous. Did Memphis make a really strong push that made Kane reconsider? Some of this? All of this? None of this?
The one thing that doesn’t

Pitt pursuing Alabama transfer Trevor Lacey

Pitt has had a whirlwind offseason to say the least. The surprising departure of Steven Adams set the Panthers back in the post. Now with Trey Zeigler and potentially even JJ Moore gone, they seem a bit thin on the wings as well. It is rumored that DeAndre Kane is leaning towards coming back home to play for Pitt, but that has not been solidified yet. Enter: Trevor Lacey.
Lacey is a former five star recruit out of high school and signed with Alabama . He was initially recruited by the likes of Kentucky, Kansas, and UConn before ultimately deciding with the in-state Crimson Tide.
Lacey has been a two year starter for the Tide, and he averaged 11 points per game in 2013. Jon Rothstein tweeted yesterday that Pitt is in play for the former Alabama guard. They will reportedly go up against conference mates North Carolina, NC State, and Miami in the recruiting battle:

UNC, NC State, Miami, and Pitt are all in the mix for Alabama transfer Trevor Lacey, per multiple sources. 2 years of eligibility remaining

Is JJ Moore transferring from Pitt?

As if this month weren't tumultuous enough (what, with the Trey Zeigler transfer, Steven Adams' announcement of leaving for the NBA, and losing out on recruit Jon Severe and transfer Eli Carter), the offseason just got a little more difficult with news that forward J.J. Moore may be transferring out of the program.
First things first - as of now this doesn't appear to be a done deal. CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein tweeted the news but it's not been confirmed by the local sources yet. The Post-Gazette says that (as of now, anyway) Moore has not yet asked for his release or informed Jamie Dixon he wants out.
The Moore transfer rumor has been around the message boards for quite a while, but I've never been able to make much of it. Moore surely would like more minutes and has been blocked a bit by Lamar Patterson the past two seasons, but he's still seen plenty of time in my opinion. There are times over his career where I've called for him to play a bit more, but since he's a bit s

No. 20 Pittsburgh 81, DePaul 66

J.J. Moore scored 21 points off the bench and No. 20 Pittsburgh shot a school-record 72 percent to beat DePaul 81-66 on Saturday in the Panthers' last Big East regular-season game.

The next stop for surging Pittsburgh is its final Big East tournament, which begins Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Panthers (24-7, 12-6), who will move into the Atlantic Coast Conference next season, have won 11 of their last 14 games and six of eight on the road.

Moore, a junior forward, hit a career-best five 3-pointers while many of his teammates got to the rim at will against DePaul (11-20, 2-16). Twenty-two of Pittsburgh's 46 first-half points came on either a dunk or layup.

Despite the Blue Demons shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, Pittsburgh led by 11 points at halftime thanks to its own sharp shooting. The Panthers hit 19 of 25 shots (76 percent) for the fourth-best shooting percentage in a half in school history. Moore, who tied his career high for points, went 8 for 8 from

Pittsburgh 72, Oakland 62

J.J. Moore had five of his team-high 16 points in overtime, and Pittsburgh set a school record for largest halftime deficit overcome with a 72-62 victory over Oakland on Saturday night.

The Panthers (4-0) trailed by 14 at the half and by as many as 18 in the second half, the third-largest deficit they've come back from at any point in a game for a win. Pitt went on a 7-0 run over regulation's final 59 seconds to force overtime.

Pitt dominated the extra session, scoring 11 of the first 13 points in overtime, including a James Robinson jumper that survived a video review to be sure it beat the shot clock.

The Panthers improved to 95-3 against nonconference opponents in the 10-year history of the Petersen Events Center.

Corey Petros had 19 points for the Golden Grizzlies (1-3), who have never beaten a Big East opponent.

Pittsburgh 86, Fordham 51

J.J. Moore netted 20 points to lead Pittsburgh in a dominant 86-51 victory over Fordham Monday night in a nonconference affair.

With the win, Pittsburgh (2-0) advances to the semifinal round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Points were divvied up among several Panthers.

Steve Adams, the Preseason Big East Rookie of the Year, had an impressive game with 13 points and five rebounds. Trey Woodall was not far behind with 12 points.

Bryan Smith led the scoring effort for Fordham (0-2) with 11 points and three rebounds, and was 4 of 9 on 3-point tries. The Rams shot 40 percent (6 of 15) from beyond the arc.

But those 3-pointers could only do so much for the Rams.

The Panthers man-to-man defense slowed down the Fordham 3-pointers in the second half as Pittsburgh took control of the game with fast-paced drives down the court.

The Rams kept it close in the first fifteen minutes of the game, pulling the gap to 18-15 before the Panthers ran away with it.

In the first half, Fordham's zone defense challenged Pittsbu

Pitt's Woodall, Moore to have surgery

Pittsburgh point guard Tray Woodall and forward J.J. Moore will both undergo surgery Friday,

Coach Jamie Dixon says Woodall will have surgery to repair a sports hernia initially sustained during a win over Duquesne last November. The junior missed 11 of Pitt's next 12 games but still led the Panthers with 171 assists while averaging 11.7 points.

Moore will have surgery to repair the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. He averaged 6.1 points and 2.3 rebounds but came on during the last month of the season, averaging 11.8 points over Pitt's final 13 games as the Panthers won the College Basketball Invitational.

Both players are expected to miss three months, though Dixon expects both to be fully recovered in time for the 2012-13 season.

JJ Moore breaks foot; out for Greentree

Well, this sucks (via the Trib):

Sophomore forward J.J. Moore, whose late surge was a bright spot during a 22-17 season, will miss the next three months after suffering a broken right fifth metatarsal bone during a pick-up game last week.
Moore is the third Pitt player in the past 41/2 years to break his fifth metatarsal — the long bone that runs on the outside of the foot and connects to the pinky toe — joining former Panthers Levance Fields and Jermaine Dixon.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Moore will undergo surgery this month and likely will miss the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro-Am League, which runs from mid-June to mid-July. He should be fully healed long before the mid-October start of practice for the 2012-13 season.

Missing Greentree isn't exactly the end of the world, but the summer league will be without one of its most entertaining players.

Washington State falls to Pitt 57-53 in CBI

Washington State's sharp shooting didn't make the long trip across country to the Petersen Events Center with the Cougars, and now they'll spend a few more days in Pittsburgh than they hoped.

Reggie Moore scored 18 points, but the Cougars made were 4 for 13 from 3-point range in a 57-53 loss to Pittsburgh in Game 2 of the College Basketball Invitational championship series. The Panthers (21-17) knotted the best-of-three series and will host the Cougars (19-17) on Friday for the CBI title.

It's a unique situation the Cougars are in, but Moore appreciates the opportunity to take a win back from the Panthers.

''It's different, but it's fun,'' he said. ''We know each other really well, so I think the third game will be even more competitive.''

Talib Zanna scored 14 for the Panthers, who were playing without senior leader Ashton Gibbs for the first time this season. Gibbs was sidelined with an injured right ankle and his status for Friday is uncertain.

Pitt beat Wofford if anybody cares

After last night’s CBI opener, JJ Moore said that Pitt’s true fans showed up to support them. Well, I guess I hate Pitt then because there was no way in hell I was going down to the Pete to watch them play a school called Wofford in a tournament sponsored by Zebra Pen.
JJ can eat ‘em but he did score a game-high 16 points so let him talk. Tray Woodall scored 16 too and added 9 assists…but it was Wofford so it would’ve looked terrible if he didn’t. Five Panthers scored in double figures and Nasir Robinson grabbed 11 boards and Pitt won 81-63.
You don’t really need a breakdown of this game; no one other than JJ and the guys who were paid to be there even cared about. Regardless of how they played this year, Pitt was the better team in this one. They shot an incredible 55% and only turned the ball over six times. That’s how you win games…or that’s how everyone plays against Wofford.
It should have been a lot worse seeing as how Pitt had a 42-23 halftime lead but the Panthers played like

No. 15 Pittsburgh 71, St. Francis (Pa.) 47

J.J. Moore scored 15 points, Dante Taylor added 14 points and eight rebounds as No. 15 Pittsburgh crushed St. Francis (Pa.) 71-45 on Tuesday night.

The Panthers (11-1) won their ninth straight by holding the Red Flash (3-8) to 35 percent shooting and continuing their dominance on the glass. Pitt came in leading the nation in rebounding margin - grabbing 12 more a game than the opponent - and added to those numbers by outrebounding St. Francis 42-21.

Anthony Ervin had 13 points and Stephon Whyatt added 10 for the Red Flash, who never recovered after Pitt reeled off the game's first 13 points

St. Francis came in shooting 48 percent from the field on the season but missed its first eight shots and quickly fell behind by 21 points before settling in.
