Competition for Packers backup QB job is getting ugly in a hurry

Trent Green. Mark Brunell. Aaron Brooks. Gus Frerotte. Joey Harrington. Tim Rattay. Quinn Gray. The tryouts for Green Bay's backup QB spot are starting to resemble the first couple of days of American Idol auditions. And as a Lions fan, I couldn't be happier.

The Great Q.B. Mistake!

The Hands down best player in the 2007 NFL draft is a wide receiver. The problem with that is the Oakland Raiders depth chart shows us that they are deep at that position & very thin at Quarter Back. So the question becomes do you draft the best player or do you draft the best player for your team?

Aaron Brooks must find a new team to lose for

One season, eight losses, eight interceptions to three touchdown passes…in Detroit, it's enough to earn a three year-contract extension. In Oakland, where the standards are ever-so-slightly higher, it's enough to cost Aaron Brooks his job.

To be fair, Brooks didn't have a whole lot to work with; his offensive line helped him eat turf 26 times and his top two targets, Randy Moss and Jerry Porter, are spoiled prima donnas who spent a significant portion of the season on the sidelines getting their nails done. We think...

Raiders cut ties with Brooks

After his 1st horrendous season with the Raiders, the option for a 2nd year was denied by the Raiders. Look for them to target Russell or Quinn in the draft.

Order Your Own Breakfast; Raiders Hire New Offensive Coordinator

The days of looking to a bed and breakfast manager for play calls are over in Oak-Town. The Raiders have hired Greg Knapp to call the plays next season. Knapp spent the 2004-2006 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, and before that was with the 49ers.

Knapp's offense has led the NFL in rushing for the past three seasons, and averaged 183.7 ypg in 2006.

This looks to be a good move for the Raiders. Granted they still have the worst O-Line in the game, they now have a coordinator who understands how to use a quarterback outside of the pocket. With Aaron Brooks, and the high chance that Jamarcus Russell is drafted by the Raiders, new head coach Lane Kiffin may be looking at an improving offense.

Will the Raiders Draft Brady Quinn?

A year after a blunderous draft for the Raiders, they're thinking QB again. After making the HUGE error of not drafting Matt Leinart, the Raiders opted to spend way too much money on a dumb Aaron Brooks.

Let's face it- Brooks has been the shittiest all year long (when he played, that is). For the most part, Brooks has thrown more INTs than TDs and didn't play for a lot of the season as a result of the injury. Just think about it...with the Raiders' talent at WR, think about how much better they would be with Matt Leinart at QB.

With all this said, do you think it's realistic for the Raiders to draft Quinn in the draft, or do you think they'll stick with shitty Brooks and keep their sub-par offense just that- sub par?

Podcast on Aaron Brooks and Jerry Porter

Check out this podcast by Raiders' reporter David White about whether or not Aaron Brooks will be able to reclaim his role at QB and whether Jerry Porter will even play a single down this season. In other side news today, Porter rejoined the Raiders today after his suspension was reduced. Do I think that Aaron Brooks will reclaim the start? He certainly shouldn't. The Raiders were dumb for picking him up in the first place, and now they have to stick with their QB of the future, Walter. Last week, for the first time, Walter played a decent game against the Cardinals' defense that scorched Rex Grossman the week before.

Raiders Latest Team Added To List of Volek Suitors

The Tennessee Titans appear to be the only team in the NFL that has no interest in making Billy Volek their starting QB. The Oakland Raiders have now inquired about Volek, since their current combo of Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter have yielded little or no offense (although Art Shell seems to be having a positive effect on Aaaron Brooks, as he is now throwing the ball forward, just like he was projected to, coming out of college.)

Volek is currently (and curiously) the Titans' third string QB. Volek had been a more than serviceable backup during the McNair era, even putting up fairly prolific numbers while hooking up with Drew Bennett at the end of the 2004 season, but it looks as he'll never see the field as a Titan again, since Jeff Fisher is just about changing his QB's series by series, not once including Volek into the mix.

Jerry Porter Was Lovin' His Team Getting Smashed

I'm not a big Aaron Brooks fan, but you can't have a wide receiver pumping his fist after his quarterback gets sacked. Actually, Jerry Porter wasn't even active for last night's game against the Chargers making the situation even more awkward. He was caught laughing on the sidelines in street clothes after Brooks was sacked for the seventh time. Porter has squabbled with management thoughout training camp and he's been demoted from his starting spot opposite Randy Moss. Pissing off the guy who throws you the ball after already angering the people that write your checks is not the way you want to start a season. This won't help his fantasy value.

Who would have guessed Randy Moss would be the one keeping this team together.

Aaron Brooks a bust?

Here's an article I penned a few weeks ago about the bust potential of Aaron Brooks in the Raiders offense. He did have a decent game last week, but the Lions defense can make anyone look good. With Andrew Walter hurting and Jeff George just signed, you have to wonder how long it will be until Randy Moss explodes for not getting the ball enough.

Raiders Sign Jeff George...Really

No, this is not 2001: the Oakland Raiders have signed former No. 1 pick Jeff George. The same Jeff George that hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL in five years. The Raiders already have three QBs - starter Aaron Brooks, 2005 3rd rounder and former ASU standout Andrew Walter, and Marques Tuiasosopo, an oft-injured vet who has started some in the past.

The rationale for signing George, particularly this late into the preseason, isn't exactly clear. At the very least, he will have a fair amount of rust to shake off. This, of course, is the team that brought Art Shell back after they fired him from his last coaching gig 12 years ago.

In other news, the Raiders are coming close to terms with Fred Biletnikoff and Kenny Stabler.

Raiders Win Battle of the Bay

The Oakland Raiders looked impressive in their third preseason game, as they beat their Bay Area-rivals 23-7. Aaron Brooks threw an 8-yard touchdown to Doug Gabriel on Oakland's opening drive. Alex Smith, on the other hand, struggled as he went 6 for 12 and threw an interception.
