Martin wins Gamecocks debut in OT, 82-75

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Frank Martin patiently explained several things people should know about him as South Carolina's new basketball coach. One of the biggest, he stressed, is he doesn't get down on his guys, no matter how much he yells or glares during games.

So Martin wasn't surprised when South Carolina guard Brenton Williams rebounded from a late tongue-lashing from the coach to score 12 of his 14 points in overtime, leading the Gamecocks to an 82-75 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday in Martin's debut.

"I might substitute during games, but I don't lose faith in my players," Martin said.

Williams rewarded Martin's faith in the extra period. He made back-to-back layups to stretch the lead to 74-68 then went 8-of-8 from the foul line to keep the Gamecocks (1-0) out front. Martin soaked in the cheers when the game ended, congratulated his players and took a couple of deep breaths after a moment he'd been waiting for since accepting the job in March.

"It's always

Butler will be on attack | UWM BASKETBALL Panthers face tough Bulldogs defense

It's a safe bet that Butler will do everything possible to make it difficult on UW-Milwaukee's perimeter shooters in a second-round Horizon League tournament game Friday night.

The Panthers have won five consecutive games thanks in large part to outstanding three-point shooting, particularly from senior forward Tony Meier and junior guard Paris Gulley.

Meier has made 19 of 32 three-point shots over that span and Gulley has made 17 of 33. Together, they've accounted for 41.2% of the Panthers' offense.

If the Bulldogs clamp down on them, can the Panthers adjust? "Tony Meier might not get as many looks as he's been getting," said UWM coach Rob Jeter. "But the things we do open up certain opportunities.

Sometimes they might be inside and sometimes they might be other guys on the perimeter." Milwaukee (20-12) faces Butler (19-13) at the Valparaiso (Ind.) Athletics-Recreation Center. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. The winner meets top-seeded Valparaiso on its home court in the semi

Milwaukee 86, Cleveland St. 84

Tony Meier made two free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining to give Milwaukee an 86-84 victory against Cleveland State on Tuesday night.

Meier, who scored 15 points, was fouled on a 3-point attempt. He made the first two shots but missed the third for the Panthers (16-12, 9-7 Horizon League).

James Haarsma had 25 points and made five 3-point shots for Milwaukee. Paris Gulley added 17 points, Kyle Kelm 13 and Kaylon Williams 12.

Trevon Harmon scored 27 points and Jeremy Montgomery 15 for the Vikings (20-7, 10-5), who rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit but could not prevent their conference regular-season title hopes from taking a hit.

Valparaiso (19-9, 12-4) defeated Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday and holds the tiebreaker over Cleveland State. The Crusaders can clinch first place by beating Loyola Chicago on Feb. 21.

Milwaukee made 33 of 40 free-throw attempts; Cleveland State was 20 of 24.

Charlie Lee had 14 points and Anton Grady 10 for the Vikings, who shot 28 of 46 (60.9 percent) from the field.

Kendrick Perry scored 30 points and Youngstown State defeated Milwaukee 73-65 Tuesday night.

Perry was 9 of 16 from the floor, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Damian Eargle and DuShawn Brooks scored 14 points each for the Penguins (12-9, 7-4 Horizon), who completed a sweep of their Horizon League rivals. Youngstown State won 68-66 at home on Jan. 20.

This time, the Penguins led 35-28 at halftime and led by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Kaylon Williams had 17 points for the Panthers (14-10, 7-5), and contributed five assists and six rebounds. Kyle Kelm had 12 points and five rebounds and Tony Meier added 10 points for the Panthers.

Milwaukee held a brief lead at 18-17, but that was all as it lost for just the third time at home in 13 games this season.

Paris Gulley had 16 points, Kyle Kelm 15 and Tony Meier 13 for Milwaukee (10-6). Kaylon Williams dished out 12 assists.

Stainbrook's tip-in with 7:28 remaining gave Western Michigan the lead for good, 51-49. The Panthers went scoreless for 3:57 as free throws by Stainbrook and Richie helped the Broncos build a seven-point cushion.

Milwaukee got within four points on Kelm's 3-pointer, but Hutcheson hit from behind the arc with 1:34 left to make it 62-55. With the Panthers forced to foul, Western Michigan pulled away at the free-throw line.

Another Parity Party in the Horizon League

For the first time in 31 seasons, three teams finished the Horizon League regular season tied for first place last February. Milwaukee, Butler and Cleveland State all finished 13-5 (Milwaukee got the nod, however, for sweeping Butler during the season), and Valparaiso, at 12-6, was just a step behind.
Two of those four teams were each taken down by a team that finished among the league's bottom three during the regular season (2-16 Youngstown State took down Butler and 7-11 Loyola Chicago beat Milwaukee). That's a lot of parity.
This season it's more of the same, and perhaps, to an even greater extent. The league's 18 games played so far have been decided by an average of 5.8 points, and seven games of those have been decided by three points or less. Nine of the ten teams have at least one win, and no team is undefeated. Six teams are either 3-1 or 2-1.
So, who's in it to win it? This isn't the 2009-2010 season; there are at least four conte...

No. 10 Marquette 64, Milwaukee 50

Junior Cadougan tied his career high with 15 points and No. 10 Marquette beat cross-town rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the 39th straight time, 64-50 on Thursday night.

Darius Johnson-Odom and Davante Gardner added 12 points each for Marquette (11-1), which was coming off its first loss of the season Monday at LSU. Cadougan also had a career-high seven rebounds.

Ryan Allen led Milwaukee (9-4) with 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, and Kaylon Williams had 11 points.

Marquette's 39-game winning streak against Milwaukee is the second-longest involving two Division I teams. Syracuse has beaten Colgate 45 straight times.

The series dates to 1917, and Marquette's 75-72 victory last season was the closest game in series history. This one also had the look of a rivalry, with physical and sometimes sloppy play on both ends. The teams combined for 41 fouls, including three technicals.

Gardner had three fouls in the half - two on one play, as he followed a hard foul on an alley-oop attempt by Allen wi

Horizon League wide open for Cleveland State

With Butler rebuilding this season, the bright lights of the national spotlight are turned away from the Horizon League.

That's made the conference landscape a little blurry with no clear-cut favorite heading into the bulk of conference play.

Cleveland State, however, has emerged as a strong contender to unseat the Bulldogs, who have made the NCAA tournament five straight years. In their season opener, the Vikings travelled to then seventh-ranked Vanderbilt and upset the Commodores 71-58.

Five straight wins to start the season made Cleveland State look like it might be the favorite to win the Horizon League, but a 63-53 loss to an inferior Hofstra team was cause to question the Vikings' consistency.

Though they've rebounded to win five straight, all have been against opponents they were expected to beat, including squeaking by 45-43 at Wright State.

It would be fortuitous to disregard Butler as a legitimate conference contender. Though the Bulldogs have had a rough start record-wise, their ou

Taylor seeks higher percentage in Milwaukee

Aside from back-to-back defeats to two of the better teams in the country, Wisconsin has handled its opponents with relative ease.

It hasn't faced much difficulty in its series with in-state rival Milwaukee, either.

The No. 14 Badgers look for a 19th consecutive victory over the Panthers as the teams meet at US Cellular Arena on Tuesday night.

Three days after falling 60-57 at No. 5 North Carolina, Wisconsin (8-2) suffered a 61-54 defeat to then-No. 16 Marquette on Dec. 3. The Badgers, though, have outscored teams by an average of 30.3 points in their eight wins.

Much of Wisconsin's success can be attributed to its stellar defensive play. The Badgers rank first in the country with an average of 44.9 points allowed.

Wisconsin's defensive prowess was on display during Saturday's 62-51 victory over usually high-scoring UNLV. The Badgers held the Runnin' Rebels to nearly 30 points below their season average and limited them to a season-worst 39.1 percent from the floor.

Milwaukee's Kyle Kelm led the game in rebounds, pulling down 10. McCallum finished with 14 points on four 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

The Panthers are off to their best start since 2004, when they opened with six straight wins.
