UConn honors victims before win

Connecticut wanted to show that the Huskies care about the victims and the involved in the shooting of 20 children and six adults in their state last Friday.

Freshman Omar Calhoun scored a season-high 22 points, sophomore Ryan Boatright had 21 points and UConn shot a season-high 66 percent in an 84-50 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore at the XL Center.

It was UConn's first game since the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

''We just wanted to make sure we came out here and put on a good show for the crowd and stick together as a team, and play for everybody that was in that tragedy,'' Calhoun said.

A pre-game ceremony was held and there was a moment of silence as 26 cheerleaders, members of the dance team and the band held candles and formed a circle with the UConn players at midcourt.

As a tribute to the victims at Sandy Hook, UConn players wore patches on the front of their jerseys with the white letters ''SH'' on a green background -- the eleme

No. 11 Cincy rolls to stay unbeaten

Winless and short-handed, Maryland-Eastern Shore couldn't keep up with one of the nation's top teams.

Point guard Cashmere Wright set a career high with six 3s, and Sean Kilpatrick scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half Saturday, keeping No. 11 Cincinnati unbeaten with a 92-60 victory over the Hawks.

The Bearcats (9-0) have opened the season with nine wins for the 10th time in school history. They also did it in during the 2010-11 season, winning their first 15 games.

Cincinnati dominated every aspect, including rebounds, where it had a 55-31 advantage.

''They killed us on the boards with their size, their strength, their athleticism,'' Maryland-Eastern Shore coach Frankie Allen said. ''We were playing really short-handed. We only had seven or eight guys available to even play.''

Kyree Jones led the Hawks (0-9) with 25 points. The Hawks shot 29.9 percent from the field.

No. 11 Cincinnati 92, Md.-Eastern Shore 60

Cashmere Wright got ready to shoot a long 3 from the left wing, thought better and pulled the ball in. When the defender didn't respond, he fired away and swished it.

Cincinnati's senior point guard seems to be getting better at deciding when to shoot and when to pass, one of the things the 11th-ranked Bearcats want to see as they get ready for Big East play.

Wright set a career high with six 3s, and Sean Kilpatrick scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half Saturday, keeping Cincinnati unbeaten with a 92-60 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Bearcats (9-0) have opened the season with nine wins for the 10th time in school history. They also did it in during the 2010-11 season, winning their first 15 games.

One of their areas for improvement is the half-court offense. Wright ran it smoothly, getting 20 points with nine assists and only one turnover in 24 minutes.

''Right now, the coaches are giving me the green light to shoot,'' Wright said. ''If you feel you're

Bearcats Beat UMES with the Greatest of Ease

For the 11th time in school history, the Cincinnati Bearcats are 9-0. I didn't have to look that up because Tommy G said that roughly 49,823 times during the broadcast. Maryland Eastern-Shore is very bad. Cincinnati is very good. That was the story of the game. There is a week off before the Bearcats play again, so this game got the job done as an exercise in ass kicking.

Cashmere Wright had 20 and 9 assists. The SI box score says 8. We'll find out officially soon. Either way, Cash passed Damon Flint for 5th place all time in assists at Cincinnati. Congrats to Cash. Sean Kilpatrick had a huge game with 23 points on 10-15 shooting. JaQuon Parker added 12-7-4 in another solid game for the senior trio.

The surprise was Shaq Thomas. He scored 11 points to go with 5 rebounds. He and Cashmere Wright had a little alley oop party going for a few possessions. You like to see the young games get some run. And get some run Thomas did.

Props to Kyree Jones of Maryland East...

No. 11 Cincinnati tops Maryland-Eastern Shore

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Point guard Cashmere Wright set a career high with six 3-pointers, and Sean Kilpatrick scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half Saturday, keeping No. 11 Cincinnati unbeaten with a 92-60 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Bearcats (9-0) have opened the season with nine wins for only the 10th time in school history. They also did it in during the 2010-11 season, winning their first 15 games.

Cincinnati moved up to No. 11 this week -- its highest ranking since it finished the 2003-04 season at No. 11 -- off impressive wins over Iowa State, Oregon and Alabama. The Bearcats had back-to-back home games this week against overmatched teams.

They set a school record with 23 steals during an 87-53 win over Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday, getting easy baskets in transition off 32 turnovers. This time, they hit open shots against a team that has lost all of its games by double-digits.

Wright finished with 20 points and nine assists.

Md.-Eastern Shore-Cincinnati Preview

Undefeated Cincinnati has consistently blown out much weaker opponents. There isn't any reason to think that trend won't continue against winless Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The 11th-ranked Bearcats try to open 9-0 while the visiting Hawks hope to avoid starting 0-9 when these teams square off Saturday.

Cincinnati has been somewhat tested in three games against teams from major conferences, though its only real scare came last Saturday in a 58-56 nail-biter against Alabama. The Bearcats have outscored foes by an average of 34.4 points in their other five contests, most recently cruising past Arkansas-Little Rock 87-53 on Thursday.

Among the Big East leaders with 19.6 points per game, Sean Kilpatrick scored 18 while Cheikh Mbodj and fellow center David Nyarsuk posted season highs of 12. It was the Bearcats' defensive effort, though, that proved most noteworthy: they set a school record with 23 steals and forced a season-high 32 turnovers.

Logan Aronhalt scored 15 of his 17 points from beyond the arc, and Maryland breezed past winless Maryland-Eastern Shore 100-68 Wednesday night for its seventh straight victory.

Charles Mitchell had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (7-1), who had five players score in double figures. Alex Len contributed nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks in only 17 minutes.

Playing the first of eight straight home games, Maryland improved 16-0 in this lopsided in-state series. The Terrapins shot 64 percent from the floor in building a 49-28 halftime lead.

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon opened with a lineup that did not include usual starters Len, Pe'Shon Howard and Nick Faust. In spite of this, the Terrapins hit their first four shots and raced to an 11-3 lead.

Freshman Shaquille Cleare had two baskets in the surge and scored 10 of his 12 points before halftime.

3 teams that could lose every game they play

Not since the New Jersey Institute of Technology did it in the 2007-2008 season has a team managed to run the table on losses, but there's been at least one one-win team every season since then. NJIT also makes that list which includes Bryant, Marist, Centenary (R.I.P) and Towson (thanks, UNC-Wilmington).

So, with 13 winless teams remaining, it's time to start asking that question: Which teams have the best chance of losing every game they'll play this season?

I found three, and I ranked them by likelihood of complete failure.

	3. Louisiana-Monroe (0-2)
Pomeroy chance of winless record: 0.4%

The key with a lot of this is scheduling, and while winless teams like Alabama State, Mississippi Valley State, Idaho State, Jackson State and Liberty aren't looking great, they all are basically guaranteed at least one win because they're all either surrounded by terrible teams in the SWAC or they have a non-D-I team on their schedule. Liberty even has th...

Kyree Jones led Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-3) with 21 points. Ronald Spencer had 14 rebounds.

Pine Bluff led 18-17 with 5:15 left in the first half when Hammond and Kennedy hit 3-pointers to spark an 8-0 run.

Dominique Cowell hit a jumper to stop the run and pull the Hawks within 26-19 at halftime, but a 3-pointer by Jackson and a jumper by Haynes to start the second half put the Golden Lions up by 12. They extended the lead to as many as 18 when Kennedy scored inside with 11:14 remaining.

Kyree Jones led Maryland-Eastern Shore with 28 points. He was 9 for 12 from the field, including 4 of 7 beyond the arc. Olantunji Kosile added 14 points off the bench for the Hawks.

Houston Baptist shot 58 percent from the field and 6 of 11 on 3-point attempts. That helped offset 4 of 12 shooting from the free-throw line.
