La Salle 80, Boise St. 71

One hot guard is awfully handy at NCAA tournament time. Four? Pretty much unbeatable.

Tyrone Garland led La Salle's guard-driven offense with 22 points, and the Explorers wrapped up the NCAA tournament's First Four by getting the better of an old-fashioned shootout, beating Boise State 80-71 on Wednesday night.

It was a notable moment for the 13th-seeded Explorers (22-9), who hadn't even been in the tournament for 21 years. Now, they head to Kansas City to play fourth-seeded Kansas State on Friday.

And it'll be a nostalgic trip back to the city where they won the national title 59 years ago by beating Bradley in the title game.

Kansas City? Here they come.

''Unbelievable tradition here,'' coach John Giannini said. ''I think people have tended to have forgotten what a basketball power La Salle was for over four decades. So it's a big deal. It's a big deal to re-establish that. It's a big deal for people who attended La Salle and love La Salle, who had gr

Michael Lyons scored a career-high 37 points, leading Air Force to a 91-80 victory over Boise State on Saturday.

Lyons hit 13 of 18 shots - including 3 of 5 3-pointers - and was 8 for 8 at the free-throw line for the Falcons (10-6, 2-2 Mountain West). He had been averaging 17.7 points per game this season.

It was the most points scored in a game by an Air Force player since Jarmica Reese scored 40 vs. UNLV on Jan. 10, 1998.

Mike Fitzgerald added 17 points and eight assists for the Falcons.

No. 19 New Mexico gets 79-74 OT win over Boise St

Boise State coach Leon Rice isn't about to let his young team get down after a disappointing loss to No. 19 New Mexico.

The Broncos played well and battled into overtime before the Lobos pulled away in the final 5 minutes for a 79-74 victory. The defeat snapped the Broncos' seven-game winning streak, was the first home loss of the season and marked the third straight loss to New Mexico (16-2, 3-0 Mountain West Conference) since the Broncos joined the league a year ago.

''Our guys are devastated. They battled their tails off and wanted this one really bad,'' Rice said. ''But we can't hang our heads. We've got to wipe this one off. We've got to really be able to flip the switch.''

Now, Boise State (13-3, 1-1) needs to regroup in time for hitting the road Saturday to play Air Force.

Derrick Marks, who returned after serving a one-game suspension, led all scorers with 27 points. Four other Broncos scored in double figures and Boise State shot better than the

Boise St.-San Diego St. Preview

San Diego State will have had three days to think about the ugly loss that ended its 11-game winning streak. Boise State could bear the brunt of the Aztecs' frustration Wednesday night.

The No. 17 Aztecs look to get back on track at home, where they've won eight in a row and will be facing a struggling Broncos team that's winless on the road.

San Diego State (18-3, 4-1 Mountain West Conference) shot a season-low 31.3 percent as its run was snapped in a 77-60 loss at Colorado State on Saturday. The Aztecs went 3 of 21 from 3-point range - also a season worst - and were outrebounded 40-30.

Mountain West leading scorer Chase Tapley went 3 of 17 from the field and scored 10 points - 6.1 below his average.

"We were beaten today. We played hard. We had a difficult time making shots," said coach Steve Fisher, whose team got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Jamaal Franklin. "Part of that goes to Colorado State and how they guarded. We had a hard time making shots and they made shots. They
