New Jersey Players in the 2012 NCAA Tournament

As you look through the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket, you will see there are no teams from our home state of New Jersey. Seton Hall got snubbed while Princeton, Rutgers, St. Peters, and others did not have seasons worthy being included in the big dance.
Despite not having any New Jersey teams, there are plenty of players on other teams that have ties to our great basketball state. DoubleGSports.com will take you through the local players and give you an idea of the names to look out for.
All-NJ Tournament Team
Our All-NJ tournament team this year will feature a three guard set.
Guard – Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas). Taylor is a senior guard for the Jayhawks. The Hoboken native who played his high school ball at St. Anthony’s appeared in all 33 games this season including 32 starts. He is second on the Jayhawks with 17.3 points per game. He also averaged 1.9 rebounds a game and dished out a total of 159 assists this season while averaging a team high 33.3 minutes per game....

Brown's Career Night Helps Temple Past CMU, 86-74

Aaron Brown scored a career-high 20 points to lead Temple past Central Michigan in the Owls’ home opener, 86-74. The Owls hit season highs in three-point attempts (24) and makes (11) as they used a scorching opening 20 minutes to build a 14-point halftime lead.
With their starting center out for the next six weeks, the Temple Owls are going to have to rely on strong guard play and spreading the scoring around if they want to survive a rocky stretch of injuries. Strong guard play was what they got in front of a crowd of 5,215, with four members of the Owls’ backcourt scoring in double digits.

Brown, who head coach Fran Dunphy calls his “hardest-working player,” was the player of the night for Temple, connecting twice from distance in a first-half spurt that saw the Owls increase their lead to 24 points, the high water mark of the night.
“It felt good to be out there and knock down the first couple shots,” Brown said after the game. “I felt good, so I just kept shooting.”

Philly College Hoops Weekly Review: 12/1/2011

This is our third weekly College Hoops Review, and the debut of our first-ever City 6 Monthly Honor Roll. Zack Rosen won the first player of the month award and was joined by four other Philadelphia area ballplayers for this month's team--three guards and two forwards. This was a tough week overall for Philly squads, with some bad losses and injuries hurting some of the city's top teams, while some of the younger squads look to be playing stronger than one would have thought this early in the season. Hit the jump for our November honor roll and the rest of the Philly College Hoops Weekly Recap!

*A quick note about the game predictions and advanced statistics. We use Ken Pomeroy's fantastic college basketball website for his predictions, which are based on advanced basketball metrics. The early-season predictors are skewed to last season's data with some adjustments, and will become more relevant as the season progresses and this year's numbers affect the form...

Puerto Rico Tip-Off : Preview and Predictions

It’s that time of the year again; the early season basketball tournaments are about to get underway. This is the best week in college basketball until March comes. Here at Roundballchat I will be previewing each of the major tournaments and giving my predictions has to who will win the tournament. I will also give my season previews for each of the major teams involved.
First up is the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The 1st round of games take place on Thursday and the championship concludes on Sunday. Check out my previews and predictions below.
1st Round
Temple vs. Western Michigan – WMU returns all five starters from last year, and Temple returns 4 starters including star guards Juan Fernandez and Ramone Moore. I like Temple in this one too much talent.
Purdue vs. Iona – Iona is one of the best teams that nobody is talking about. Mike Glover is a star. In the end Purdue has too much depth and with Robbie Hummel healthy they should roll here.
Maryland vs. Alabama
Maryland will ...

Top 10 Mid Majors for the 2011-12 College Basketball season

No, I did not forget about the mid majors. Here are my top 10 mid majors for the 2011-12 basketball season.
# 1. Memphis
Coach: Josh Pastner (Two seasons at Memphis 49-20)
2010-11: Record: 25-10 overall, 10-6 in Conf. USA (4th)
Starters Returning (4) Joe Jackson, Charles Carmouche, Will Barton, Tarik Black
This will be by far Josh Pastner’s best team; they were a young team last year and it showed. This year they bring back their top 6 scorers therefore the higher expectations. Leading the way for the Tigers is wing Will Barton (12.3 ppg). He does a little bit of everything; he excels at creating his own shot. Barton needs to improve his three point shooting. Joining him in the backcourt is point guard Joe Jackson (9.9 ppg). Jackson can break down his defender and get to the rim at ease, and also create for his teammates. Charles Carmouche (7.4 ppg) will likely start at shooting guard. The Tigers have a ton of depth here. Leading the way is Antonio Barton (8.2 ppg) and...

Teams 1-50 in my College Basketball Countdown

Here are teams 1 through 50 in my college basketball countdown. I ranked all the 74 programs in the six major conferences, as well as 26 mid majors in my top 100 countdown.
1. North Carolina
Coach: Roy Williams (Eight seasons at North Carolina 225-62). Overall 643-163, 23 years
2010-11: Record: 29-8 overall, 14-2 in ACC (1st)
Starters Returning (5) Harrison Barnes, John Henson, Kendall Marshall, Dexter Strickland, Tyler Zeller
You need just one word to describe this team - loaded; they bring back everybody from a team that made the elite 8 last year. This team has the potential to be better than the team that won the national title in 2009. Harrison Barnes (15.7 ppg) could have been the number one pick in the NBA draft, but he decided to stay in school; he can do it all, and he is as clutch as they come. Tyler Zeller (15.7 ppg) and John Henson (11.7 ppg) round out the best frontcourt in college basketball. Zeller has excellent post moves and runs the floor better than...

Temple Newcomers Prepare for Upcoming Basketball Season

With the Temple men’s basketball team just days away from their season opener at the Palestra, taking on Big Five rival Penn, the feeling of college basketball is sweeping the campus. As the team prepares for a new season, we look at this year’s new faces in the cherry and white. Will Cummings, Nick Pendergast, Jimmy McDonnell, and Anthony Lee will be new contributors to the Owls this year.
Cummings, the 6-foot-1 point guard from Jacksonville, FL signed with Temple in the early signing period last fall. He averaged 18.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 4.0 steals as a senior at Providence School. ESPN rated Cummings 29th in the 2011 ESPNU Top 50 Point Guards index. He was named First Coach Player of the Year and Coaches FACA All-State Team as a senior. The transition from high school to college is one that Cummings is handling well.
“It’s been interesting just as far as a different pace from high school to college, just being able to balance your daily schedule as far as always being on t...

Recap College Basketball Countdown: Teams #21-#30

In case you missed it here are teams 21-30 in my college basketball countdown.
# 21.Marquette
Coach: Buzz Williams (Three seasons at Marquette), overall 83-54, 4 years
2010-11: Record: 22-15 overall, 9-9 in Big East (Tie/9th)
Starters Returning (3) Johnson-Odom, Crowder, Otule
Head coach Buzz Williams hopes the strong play in the NCAA tournament will carry over to this season. The Golden Eagles bring back 4 of their top 6 scorers. Guard Darius Johnson-Odom (15. 8 ppg) is probably the most underrated star in the country. He does a little of everything for Marquette. Junior Cadougan (4 ppg) will get the first crack at point guard. He was second in assists last season. Vander Blue (5.1 ppg) is an excellent back up off the bench. Freshman Derrick Wilson and Todd Mayo will also help out in the backcourt. Leading the way in the frontcourt is Jae Crowder (11.8 ppg). He is a tough player, and despite being undersized he led the team in rebounds. Joining him up front will be ce...
