Freddie Roach “Win or lose, Manny’s only got a few fights left; Rios is a very dangerous fight”

After suffering a brutal knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December, questions swirled if Manny Pacquiao would ever be the same again. Many called for his retirement while Pacquiao vowed to return and return he will. On November 23rd, we will get answers to the many questions we have about Pacquiao when he faces Brandon Rios in Macau, China.
What will happen when Rios connects a flush shot on Pacquiao? Is Pacquiao’s confidence in himself shattered due to the loss to Marquez? Will Pacquiao be less willing to exchange and take chances like he use to? We gotta put those questions in the bag for now, though we can all agree on one thing, Pacquiao is running on the tail end of his career.
Freddie Roach feels the same way and probably has run the questions we have about Pacquiao through his own mind as well. Roach spoke on the Rios matchup and is a little uneasy about it, “I want Manny in a action fight and this will be a tough one. It is the young vs. the old at this point and it...

Freddie Roach will tell Manny Pacquiao to retire if he loses

Freddie Roach reportedly said that he will tell Manny Pacquiao to retire if the fighter loses for a third straight time. Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) is scheduled to fight Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KOs) on Nov. 23 in Macau, China. Pac-Man is coming off back-to-back losses. He lost a controversial split decision to Timothy Bradley last June, and he suffered a devastating knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in December. Roach, Pacquiao’s longtime trainer, says he will advise his fighter to hang up the gloves if he loses to Rios. “If he loses, I will tell him to retire,” Roach told ESPN. “If you lose three in a row it’s your time. “He’s up there in age. I’ve got to keep a close eye on him. It’s part of my job to protect him. I will do the right thing.” Pacquiao is 34 and already has a career in politics in the Philippines. Not only does he have other interests in life to look out for, but Roach has long felt that Manny’s training suffered because of his multiple i...

Manny Pacquiao requests random drug testing to fight Brandon Rios

Manny Pacquiao has reportedly requested random drug testing for his bout against Brandon Rios on November 23 at the CotaiArena in Macau, China. The 26-year-old Rios (31-1-1, 23 KOs) employs controversial strength and conditioning coach Angel Hernandez. A government witness at the BALCO case who acknowledged supplying disgraced track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery with dope, Hernandez was working with Juan Manuel Marquez when the rugged Mexican knocked the 34-year-old Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) onto Queer Street in a suspiciously violent manner. Although graying, the 39-year-old Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KOs) looked like a miniature version of Lou Ferrigno battling … Continue reading →

After cracking ‘the s— out of’ Brandon Rios, Manny Pacquiao needs to retire from prizefighting

Shopworn pugilist Manny Pacquiao will meet brawler Brandon Rios on November 24 at the CotaiArena at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau, China. Many insiders expected the 34-year-old Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) to throw fists with Juan Manuel Marquez for a fifth time this autumn. However, the 39-year-old Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KOs), who knocked Pacquiao onto Queer Street in December, decided to challenge Timothy Bradley for the WBO welterweight belt on September 14. Hence, the Filipino icon was left to face the 26-year-old Rios (31-1-1, 23 KOs). A former lightweight titlist, Rios suffered a unanimous decision loss to Mike Alvarado in … Continue reading →

Rios vs. Alvarado II results, photos & video: Mike Alvarado gets his revenge

Who wants to see Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado III? That's what's on the horizon now, after Mike Alvarado got sweet revenge against Brandon Rios on Saturday night in Las Vegas, in their HBO televised rematch of last year's slug-fest, which Rios had won by knockout.
Alvarado took home a close, hard-fought unanimous decision, winning by scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 114-113.
Rios vs. Alvarado II Photos & Video

The rematch between these two men was much like their first fight. There were great, extended periods of intense, hard-hitting, back-and-forth action, with each man giving and receiving his share of punishment.
Rios started out the fight effectively and seemed to hurt Alvarado in the early-going, but soon Alvarado turned the tables and assumed control of the fight.
The match continued to ebb and flow, but Alvarado was able to get in a rhythm where he would use his superior size and strength, combined with a bit of boxing and moving, to keep Rios from si...

Alvarado wins rematch over Rios by decision

The action was much the same, but this time the result was different. Mike Alvarado boxed and punched his way to a narrow but unanimous 12-round decision Saturday night over Brandon Rios in the rematch of their slugfest from five months ago.

Alvarado won by two points on two scorecards and one on the other to avenge his seventh-round loss to Rios in October.

It wasn't as dramatic as the first fight, when Rios stopped Alvarado after being rocked himself a round earlier. But the fight was still thrilling at times, fought at a high level between two game warriors.

It was the first loss for Rios, while Alvarado avenged his only defeat in the 140-pound bout.

Running Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II Undercard Results

In the opening bout of the afternoon, Manuel Lopez improved his record to 2-0 (2 KO) by scoring a TKO in 2 rounds over awkward Las Vegas native Jason Tresvan. Lopez had to find a bit of a groove, as Tresvan's head movement and weird style posed a few issues. By the end of the1st round, however, Lopez found a way in and began hammering Tresvan to the body -- even through a near chest-high foul protecor. Lopez swarmed in round 2 and forced a stoppage when Tresvan fell into a corner, clearly rocked.

Once is not enough as Rios and Alvarado meet again

They're doing it again because the money is good, and the fight should be even better. The last time Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado got in the ring together they stole the show, and this time they play starring roles.

Two old-fashioned fighters not afraid to take a punch to land one of their own. Two warriors too proud to back off an inch.

It's a fight fan's fight, just five months after they nearly knocked each other senseless in Southern California.

''It's never too soon to do it again,'' Rios said. ''We are warriors and if you are a warrior, you want to fight again and again and again.''

Both junior welterweights were undefeated when they met in October on the undercard of a Nonito Donaire fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Alvarado would suffer his first loss, but not before almost stopping Rios in a slugfest that would have been fight of the year had Juan Manuel Marquez not knocked out Manny Pacquiao a few weeks later.

The final press conference for Saturday night's rematch between Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios and Mike "Mile High" Alvarado was held today in Las Vegas. Right here, you can take a look at a full collection of Rios vs. Alvarado presser photos, videos and notes to continue gearing up for what's sure to be another fantastic back-and-forth brawl.

Both Rios and Alvarado aren't mincing words when it comes to their intentions on Saturday night. Each man expects it to be another rough outing, and each man is expecting and looking to knock out the other guy. Rios wants to erase anybody's memory who thinks it was an early stoppage and he didn't deserve the win, and Alvarado of course is out for revenge, and wants to settle the score and even the series.
Despite all of that, the two men are amiable with one another and certainly respect each other as well. Each man was definitely basking in the moment of the pre-fight buildup and all of the attention o...

In their words: Rios vs. Alvarado

Brandon Rios

What it comes down to is we are just two warriors who want to be the best and that is why we give our best inside the ropes all the time.

When I first signed to fight Mike Alvarado last year, I knew that it would a very exciting fight for the fans. With the way we fight it could not go any other way. Boxing might be a science to some but to me it is about passion, heart and courage. It's about giving the fans what they want -- a battle of wills and brawn.

Coming up from lightweight to fight one of the best super lightweights in the world seemed to me a good way to test myself in the ring. Many people felt I would be too small to take on a guy like Mike Alvarado, who is a big guy and fought his whole career at 140 pounds.

But I knew that after struggling at 135 pounds for almost a year I would be just as big as him on fight night. I knew I would be just as strong as he would be and that I had the chin and will to take his best shots and would be able to dish out some pain of my own.

Brandon Rios does not believe recent Mile Alvarado stabbing rumors; Feels stronger and punching harder

Brandon Rios is set to rematch Mike Alvarado this Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in a follow up to their 2012 fight of the year. Expectations are running high as fans are awaiting the same type of blood and guts action they witnessed a few months back at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Camp has been running smoothly for Rios who has been focusing on power in a effort to make a short nights work of Alvarado come Saturday, though rumors have been swirling that his counter part has not had the smoothest of camps.
The word is that Alvarado was stabbed sometime around Super Bowl weekend, and the apparent cuts on his face on the HBO special The Road To Rios vs. Alvarado 2 gives credence to that rumor they he may actually have suffered that injury.
In this exclusive interview, Rios comments on those rumors as well as talking a bit about the emphasis on sprints and leg workouts in the build up to the rematch. He also talks a bit about his jab being a power punch and h...
