Phillies Slide Hits 3 Straight With Loss in Atlanta Opener

Perhaps it was the rush of two straight day games with the trip from Florida to Atlanta sandwiched in between.

Perhaps it was the lack of time to put Monday's blown 5-0 lead behind them. Perhaps, it was both and more.

But whatever it was, the Phillies' bats went totally silent outside of a 3 for 4 game by All Star 2nd baseman Chase Utley and they continued shuttling and shuffling relief pitchers in search of a consistent, effective tandem for the stretch drive as they lost their 3rd straight, this one to the Braves by a 5-1 score in their series opener.

Marlins Edge Phillies in Finale to Take 2 of 3

The highest scoring team in the National League, the Phillies staked starter Adam Eaton to a 5-0 lead with 4 runs in the 3rd and another in the 4th off of snake-bitten Marlins' starter Scott Olsen who was pounded in his third straight start. Eaton even chipped in with a lead-off solo homer in the 4th. The Phils were looking good, too good!

Once again, the highest ERA pitching staff in the NL couldn't make a lead stand up. Eaton couldn't cope with the prosperity of a big lead as the Marlins' homer barrage began as they pounded him for three 4th inning runs on two homers, single runs in the 5th, on a fielding error, and in the 6th on a solo homer to tie the game. Reliever Kane Davis was touched for back-to-back homers in the 7th inning as the Marlins bullpen held the Phils scoreless on two hits and 4 walks until the 9th inning to win by a 7-6 score and to take the series in two of three games.

Phillies Lose Finale to Marlins Despite Another Solid Start for Kendrick

The Phillies wasted another fine pitching performance by rookie Kyle Kendrick as their offense slumbered garnering but 5 hits while being issued 5 walks and reliever Brett Myers was touched for the two winning runs in the 9th inning as Florida edged the Phils by a 4-2 score.

Braves Pitching Staff Lights out in Spring Training

Leo Mazzone or the Braves organization? Is there ever a concern that the Braves won't have enough quality arms? Check out the Spring stats. If all of the Orioles pitchers dissapoint once again and the Braves pitchers exceed expectations, I think we're going to see some of the luster come off of the great Leo Mazzone.
