JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 5-15-13

Tennessee Smokies 4 @ Jackson Generals 8
Things didn’t fall apart for the Smokies until after starter Eric Jokisch left the game. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowed 7 hits and 2 runs. He walked a batter and struckout 5. Then Trey McNutt came in and pitched 0.2 innings. He gave up 2 hits and 2 runs. He was followed by Brian Schlitter who also pitched .2 innings. He allowed 3 hits and 4 runs.
Matt Szczur was 1-4 and was caught stealing for the 3rd time. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-3 and so was Jair Fernandez. Fernandez hit a home run and drew a walk. Rubi Silva, Christian Villanueva and Jonathon Mota each added a hit.
Charlotte Stone Crabs 7 @ Daytona Cubs 1
Austin Kirk has had a rough season. He threw 4 innings and gave up 7 hits and 6 runs. He walked 4 and struckout 4. To give you an idea how useless wins and losses for pitchers are, he’s thrown 38 innings this season, given up 46 hits and 24 runs on 7 home runs, 16 walks and 30 strikeouts. Despite being awful, he’s 4-2.

Cubs Make Roster Moves and a Trade

Today was the deadline to add players to the 40-man so they would't be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. The winners were: RHP Trey McNutt, RHP Robert Whitenack, 3B Christian Villanueva and INF Logan Watkins. Bryan LaHair was desginated for assignment and RHP Carlos Gutierrez was waived (I swear I don't even know who that is). LaHair is apparently going to sign to play in Japan. Nick Struck seems to be the only surprise name left off the 40-man additions.
The Cubs also traded RHP Jake Brigham (acquired in the trade for Geovany Soto) right back to the Texas Rangers for RHP Barret Loux and a player to be named later. Brigham allegedly has an elbow injury according to Bruce Miles, so that would explain why the Cubs are getting such high upside with Loux. Loux was a former first round pick of the Diamondbacks (6th overall in 2010) out of Texas A&M. After agreeing on a $2M deal with the D'Backs, the club backed out citing an issue with his elbow and shoulder and the Rangers...

Trey McNutt makes best of it

Saw this on my rss feed today about Trey McNutt.

As in the abstract, McNutt is saying, this process is not exact. Unfortunately, Chicago's seventh-ranked prospect has been far from spot-on himself. Southern League batters are batting .266 against him, and he's posted a 55-to-39 strikeout-to-walk ratio unbefitting his powerful repertoire. After 17 starts, his last eight appearances have come out of the bullpen, where he pitches more often but with less time to introduce his secondary offerings to opposing hitters.
"I've got all the pitches. It's just a matter of throwing them for strikes on a consistent basis. That's the reason I'm in Double-A now," the Birmingham, Ala., native said, not long after playing in his 50th game for the Tennessee Smokies over the last three seasons. "When I get to where I can throw the pitches for strikes whenever I want to, I'll have it made."

McNutt fell off a cliff a year or so ago, but it's still p...

What more can be said about Rizzo? Another night another pair of HR's and a ringing ground rule double. The future looks bright at 1B. Josh Vitters was 2-4 with a BB as well. Also, can somebody tell me why Jay Jackson still has a job?
Smokies
Trey McNutt's ERA finally caught up with his secondary #'s as he was rocked last night. 9 hits and 8 ER in 3.1 IP will do that do you and we can forget about this guy being anything but a RP. Junior Lake was 1-5 with a HR and BB. In his first rehab appearance Beef Castle lit up the other team to the tune of 1-2 with a HR and BB.
Daytona
Matt Loosen put up a hell of a start working 6 shutout innings where he allowed only 2 hits and struck out 7. Loosen is somewhat of an interesting arm he struck out nearly a batter per inning last year and is doing the same so far this year as well. That said he is 23 and in Daytona so nothing to get overly excited about. His good pitching must have been contagious because even Hayden Simpson d...

Baseball’s Hottest Wives Nominee: Stephanie McNutt

Fantasy Baseball Dugout reader Keri Bush tipped us off to a hot baseball wife that deserves to be considered for our 5th Annual Baseball’s Hottest Wives contest in 2012.
If you haven’t heard of Trey McNutt before, you had better start to take notice. McNutt is currently the #2 pitching prospect in the Cubs organization. McNutt will be fighting for a bullpen position for the Cubs in 2012, despite not having pitched at the Triple-A minor league level yet. McNutt is 22-years-old and from Birmingham, Alabama.
According to Scouting Book.com, the Cubs covet McNutt and think he has a bright future, although injuries have clearly slowed him in recent years. McNutt may spend 2012 in Double-A or Triple-A, thus making wife Stephanie McNutt ineligible for the 2012 Baseball’s Hottest Wives competition. I’m sure you will agree, however, that Stephanie is a hot prospect for future years.

Cubs Trey McNutt Would Fill Void With Red Sox

In September, the Boston Red Sox’ lack of pitching prospects at the upper levels was badly exposed, as “prospects” including Michael Bowden, Felix Doubront and Kyle Weiland failed to capitalize on solid minor league numbers. Cue the Red Sox’ interest in Cubs right-handed pitching prospect Trey McNutt as compensation in the Theo Epstein debacle.
McNutt took the hill for Tennessee, the Cubs double-A affiliate in Chattanooga and I just could not miss the opportunity to scout him squaring off against Dodgers pitching prospect Allen Webster. And while McNutt proved to be a quality pitching prospect, the potential he apparently had as a top-50 overall prospect in baseball failed to register. Would I want McNutt in my organization? Absolutely! Is he the type of prospect who profiles as the centerpiece of a deal or impact talent in a big league rotation? Not for me.

Trey McNutt For Theo Epstein: Eh, Maybe.

The latest news in the Theo Epstein Chronicles has brought right-handed pitcher Trey McNutt into the forefront of the conversation. McNutt, who the Cubs drafted two years ago in the 32nd round, has recently become not just a prospect, but a top prospect in the Cubs system.
This January, resident prospect overlord Marc Hulet ranked McNutt the Number Two prospect in the Cubs system following the Matt Garza trade, while Baseball America ranked him as the 48th best prospect (also before the season).
The question is, of course, is he worth Epstein? Or, better yet, is Epstein worth him?

No. Well, in a vacuum, no. I imagine the heft of writers and readers in this region reflect Dave Cameron’s sentiments (“What is Theo Epstein Worth?”) in the GM value department. In nerdy terms, the replacement level for a sabermetric GM is much higher than it is for any position on the field.
A franchise pitcher or shortstop is almost always going to be worth more than a GM — in relative terms. In absolut...

Report: Red Sox settle on McNutt as Theo compensation

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly settled on pitching prospect Trey McNutt as the compensation they seek from the Chicago Cubs for the right to hire Theo Epstein as their next general manager.A report out of Chicago suggests the two sides could announce a formal agreement as early as Tuesday.Talk of compensation for the signing of Epstein had become heated in recent days, even though the Red Sox had already decided on Ben Cherington as Epstein's replacement.Epstein has reportedly agreed in principle to a five-year deal worth $15 million to become the GM of the Cubs. The Red Sox sought compensation because Epstein has one year left on his contract in Boston. The young executive is considered one of the top GMs in the game after leading the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.McNutt, 22, went 5-6 with a 4.55 ERA in 22 starts with the Cubs' Double-A affiliate in Tennessee last season.

McNutt Versus Bradley - Instructs Version of Mothra Versus Godzilla

In his first start since throwing three perfect innings with eight strikeouts against the Cubs at Fitch Park on Monday, RHP Archie Bradley (7th overall pick in 1st round of 2011 draft) threw three innings of no run/no hit ball, as the Diamondbacks defeated the Cubs 3-1 in AZ Instructional League action this afternoon at Whirlwind Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale.

Bradley wasn’t as sharp as last time, walking two and hitting a batter while throwing barely 50% strikes (46 pitches – 24 strikes), and recording just two strikeouts. But the Cubs once again could do nothing with the 19-year old from Broken Arrow OK.
Cubs top pitching prospect RHP Trey McNutt got the start for the Cubs, as he prepares for the start of the Arizona Fall League (AFL) next week where he will be a rotation starter for the Mesa Solar Sox.
McNutt threw two innings, and he really struggled to get through a 26-pitch 1st inning, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk. But he...
