Tigers Prospect Nick Castellanos is Best Pure Hitter in Minors

Nick Castellanos, the 44th-overall pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft by the Detroit Tigers out of Archbishop McCarthy High School (Florida), has been on a roll as of late for Triple-A Toledo in the International League. In his last ten games, Castellanos has batted .450 (18-for-40) with three home runs and 10 RBI, along with an impressive OBP/SLG/OPS line of .521/.750/1.271. Castellanos’ recent success has capped a strong season in which he has batted .300 (81-for-270) with 10 home runs and 38 RBI in 69 games. In all, Castellanos has had 23 multi-hit games this season, 10 of those in which he registered three or more hits.Coming into professional baseball, Castellanos was slotted as a third baseman, but has since transitioned to the outfield as means to focus attention on his offensive game…and what an offensive game that is.Castellanos is one of, if not the best pure hitter in the minor leagues, as he is able to effectively adjust to different pitches and rake the ball to all ...

Tigers prospect Castellanos progressing in Triple-A

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Nick Castellanos made it look easy in spring training.

The youngster batted .360 with six walks, two doubles, one home run and six RBIs in 15 games in Grapefruit League play.

The Tigers sent Castellanos down to Triple-A Toledo not so much so he could work on his hitting, but so he could continue to develop as a left fielder. Castellanos came up the system as a third baseman.

"What (manager Jim Leyland) said is when the rest of your game looks as comfortable as you do in the box, then you'll be up here," Castellanos said during the Mud Hens' last home stand. "Obviously at that time, I swung it really well in big league spring training, but he's talking about playing defense, running the bases, picking up signs from the coaches, just everything, being a complete baseball player."

Currently, Castellanos is playing left field every day and learning how to adjust from Double-A Erie to Triple-A.

Detroit Tigers Spring Training, Game 7: Nick Castellanos Goes 3-for-3 in 11-2 Win

Nick Castellanos raised his early spring average to .667 with a 3-for-3 effort against Tampa Bay on Thursday, as the Detroit Tigers rolled to an 11-2 win. Castellanos, the Tigers’ prized prospect, has seen some extended action thus far with expected starting left fielder Andy Dirks sidelined by an injury.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on RBIs from Miguel Cabrera and Castellanos, before the Rays tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Jhonny Peralta handed Detroit the lead back with an RBI fielder’s choice, then Austin Jackson made it 5-2 with his first spring homer.
Daniel Fields, Danny Worth and Argenis Diaz each had an RBI, while Dixon Machado brought home two with a ninth-inning double.

Anibal Sanchez started for Detroit and pitched three shutout innings, allowing four hits. Ryan Robkowski relived him and landed the win, despite giving up two runs in his only inning of work. Four Tigers relievers combined to shut out the Rays over the final five innings.

Dombrowski talks about OF Castellanos' prospects

Dave Dombrowski realizes the offseason is never over until opening day.

That was certainly the case last year, when the Detroit general manager brought slugger Prince Fielder to the Tigers in late January. This offseason has been quieter in Detroit, but Dombrowski keeps his ears open for possible acquisitions even now, with spring training set to start in a couple weeks.

The biggest questions facing the Tigers are left field, the fifth spot in the starting rotation and the closer role. Minor league standout Bruce Rondon may have a chance to close, but the AL champions can be a bit more patient with top outfield prospect Nick Castellanos. Dombrowski says Castellanos will have a chance to make the team, but he'll need to show he can play fairly regularly.

Detroit Tigers trade rumors: Nick Castellanos edition

There has been one constant swirling around the Detroit Tigers trade rumor campfire so far this July. No matter which position it seems the Tigers will go after and who may be dealt and received in return, prized prospect Nick Castellanos is here to stay.
Nobody doubts this course of action. Very few question it. And the resolute tone that this topic is generally dismissed with is entirely understandable.
But the Tigers should consider trading Nick Castellanos.
Yes, the same Nick Castellanos who was the organization’s 2011 Minor League Hitter of the Year, and likely will be again in 2012. The same 6’4’’, 210 lb., 20-year old rising star who just earned MVP honors at the annual Futures Game. Yeah, that guy.

Nick Castellanos
Back in the winter of 2007, the Tigers pulled a trade that included two of their most coveted prospects at the time, Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin. The Tigers also threw in 4 mid-level prospects. In return they got Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. Back then Willis wasn

Cole Hamels pops up in Detroit Tigers trade rumors

It has been rumored that the Tigers may be inquiring into the asking price on Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels.
Hamels is currently 10-4 with a 3.08 ERA and 111 K’s in as many innings for the fightin’ Phils. He is a bona fide ace and would bring a dominant left-handed starter to the Tigers for the first time since, well, since when? Denny McLain? That may not be as far off as you think.
The Tigers would then boast a rotation of Justin Verlander, Hamels, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister, and Rick Porcello. Not bad. But at what price?
Trade this guy? You can’t be serious.
The Phillies are going to want a truckload of prospects and at least 2 highly touted ones at that. In Tiger Town we all know what that means: wonder boy Nick Castellanos.
Hamels is on the last year of his deal and will get a mega-contract on the free agent market this winter. That mega-deal would be one the Tigers simply cannot hand out as they are already paying 3 players over $20M/season.
Is a 3-month rent-a-arm worth unloading a feeble

Prospect Nick Castellanos Shines in AA Debut

Apparently Double-A is no big deal for Nick Castellanos. The Tigers announced on Tuesday that they were moving up their top position player prospect from Advanced-A Lakeland (where he hit .405/.461/.553 in 55 games) to AA Erie.
Castellanos made his first appearance with the Erie SeaWolves last night, and was immediately inserted into the starting lineup as the cleanup hitter. But Nick didn’t allow the bigger stage to bother him. He singled in his first plate appearance of the game, hit a sacrifice fly that drove in a run, and smacked a double (number 18 on the year).
One game is obviously a tiny sample, and we can’t come near to making any conclusions about how he’ll adjust to AA pitching, but instant success is always encouraging. At just 20 years of age, Castellanos is crazy-young for AA (he was young for A+ too), so we shouldn’t be disappointed if he doesn’t continue to put up a 1.000+ OPS against the near-major league caliber pitchers he’ll see.

Detroit Tigers minor league players to watch

The Detroit Tigers don’t exactly have one of the better minor league systems. In fact, in Keith Law’s preseason breakdown he ranked the Tigers 24th out of 30 MLB teams.
Despite the lack of firepower across the board, there are some intriguing names that bear watching. This list will illuminate 7 names that you probably already know as well 7 names that have been flying under the radar.
Nick Castellanos
Marquee Names:

Nick Castellanos (20 y/o, 3B, High A Lakeland) – Castellanos has started his 2nd season of pro ball with High A Lakeland. Last year he was awarded as the Tigers’ minor league hitter of the year. It looks like he wants to make that 2 in a row. In 21 games, he’s off to a .398 start with a .435 on-base%. He has 8 doubles, 1 homer, and 14 RBI’s. He will probably finish the season at AA Erie and start pounding on the Tigers’ door next spring.
Jacob Turner (21 y/0, RHP, High A Lakeland) – After making it all the way to Motown last year, Turner had a dreadful spring depressed by a ‘de

Flying Tigers Friday: Nick Castellanos is Killing the Florida State League

It’s been a long time since the Tigers have had a position player prospect as exciting as Nick Castellanos. We’re now used to seeing hot pitching names like Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, and Jacob Turner in the Tigers’ organization, but I don’t know that I can name another hitter that has had a realistic “All-Star” ceiling. I guess Curtis Granderson came up through the system with some pomp and circumstance, and appeared as a Top 100 prospect. But before Granderson it had probably been since Eric Munson that the Tigers had a hitter to be excited about (it’s a downer that I bring up Munson in a post about Castellanos, isn’t it?).
And so far, Castellanos has done nothing to quiet interest in his development as a hitter. After putting up a very nice .803 OPS in West Michigan last year as a 19 year-old (including a very, very slow April), Castellanos has jumped out of the gate in High-A Lakeland this spring. Through 74 plate appearances, Castellanos has for a slash line of .386/.430/.514
