AHL Playoff Preview: Charlotte takes on Oklahoma City

If you're a Carolina fan still itching for some live hockey then you are in luck because the Charlotte Checkers will be playing in the AHL playoffs. It will be the second time in three years that they have qualified for the post-season and the first time that they have earned home-ice advantage in a series since moving to Charlotte. Those who followed the Checkers during the lockout know that the team was brewing something special with how well they played for the first half of the season. They have managed to continue this success even after losing so many players to injuries, NHL graduation and other means. The players they've lost include their top defense pairing, both starting goaltenders and a few of their top scorers. Head Coach and GM Jeff Daniels has managed to get it done, though and lead the Checkers to the playoffs even with all of the roster changes.

Their first round opponent will be a familiar foe in the Oklahoma City Barons, who were divisional rivals wit...

Fight Night OKC; Admirals fall 5-2

The Milwaukee Admirals closed out their back-to-back road games with the Oklahoma City Barons, again losing 5-2 Saturday night. Just the night before, the Admirals fell to the Barons 2-1 in overtime. So the trip to Oklahoma City didn’t benefit the Admirals except earning a point for the standings. The road trip ended with three Milwaukee players being injured.

A very exciting first period started off 3:38 into the game with Admirals’ Charles Olivier-Roussel and Barons’ Dan Byers having an altercation and receiving a game misconduct. Milwaukee captain Mike Moore received an unsportsmanlike conduct minor as well. Just several seconds later, Daniel Bang gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead knocking the puck out of mid-air. Austin Watson had the assist on the Bang goal, which continued his point streak to five games.

The Barons answered back later in the first period with two goals. Justin Schultz scored the tying goal from the point that deflected off the post on the...

Ads lose Beck/Henderson to injury, lose in OT 2-1

If you would have asked me before the game if I'd be happy with a point tonight, I would have said yes. The Milwaukee Admirals got a point, but lost much more than that tonight against Oklahoma City. In a game facing one of the most stacked teams in the AHL, the Admirals would have to come out with their full effort to have a chance tonight.

After a scoreless first period that saw the Admirals out shoot OKC 9-7, Austin Watson would get the visiting team on the board first early in the 2nd period. After a hit by Gabriel Bourque at the blueline to hold the zone, he fired a puck towards the net where Watson collected it and fired a backhanded shot over the right shoulder of Yann Danis to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. The goal gave Watson points in 4 straight games. Milwaukee held the lead until the midway point of the 2nd period, when Barons defenseman Taylor Fedun picked up his first professional goal on a slap shot from the point to tie the game at 1.

	The score rema...

Long Time Coming

After years of discussion, it looks like the NHL is ready to adopt a hybrid icing rule:

Oklahoma City Barons defenceman Taylor Fedun, who broke his leg on an icing race against the Wild in Minnesota in September 2011 and missed an entire season, certainly wants the hybrid icing rule that the AHL is trying out.

A linesman can now whistle icing if a blue-liner is ahead of a charging forward at the faceoff dots.

The league will vote on whether to keep it a permanent fixture on Nov. 19. It’ll likely stay in. The experiment is for the NHL’s benefit to determine if they’ll go that route as well.

Hybrid Icing Sounds Great To Those Affected

Edmonton Oilers’ prospect defenceman Taylor Fedun suffered a broken femur in an icing race to the puck during the pre-season and has only recently begun skating again. With news from the GM meetings saying that hybrid icing has been gaining support, the Oilers decided to ask Fedun what he thought.

No one goes to a hockey game excited to watch the races for the puck, and Fedun is not the only player to have suffered such a traumatic injury. Because the focus of the league has turned to player safety in the wake of Sydney Crosby’s concussion issues, the long talked about hybrid icing suggestions may finally get somewhere.

Taylor Fedun Once Again Skating

For yet another season, the Edmonton Oilers have seen some terrifying injuries and accidents. The most recent was Taylor Hall’s warmup skate cut to the face, but shockingly that may not have been the most horrific injury. The most horrific injury suffered this year, when you consider the end results, had to have been Taylor Fedun’s broken femur suffered during a race to the puck in a pre-season game against the Minnesota Wild. Taylor Hall’s injury elicited calls for mandatory helmets on the ice during warmups and Taylor Fedun’s injury once again was cause for the league to look at a no touch icing rule.Continue reading "Taylor Fedun Once Again Skating"

#21-#30: The Rest

Despite having his finest AHL season, the clock is ticking on Alex Plante. He's a few months away from being waiver eligible, and his chances of being exposed are high; what's more, interest is unlikely to be close to Taylor Chorney level. Alex Plante's mobility is a major item.#21: D Alex Plante A solid year in OKC so far (his numbers suggest Plante has been their best fulltime defender) but the players ahead of him with similar skills (Smid, Peckham, Teubert) either have a wider range of skills or are ahead of him in the pecking order. It's very difficult to create a scenario next fall that sees Plante protected from waivers. #22: C Tanner House College grad appears to be finding the range (3 goals in his last 5 games) and may supply enough offense to be a callup option. The Oilers early adoption of Lander makes it tough for all of the OKC centermen. #23: C Chris VandeVelde Falls behind House just a little based on season performance so far. I thinkVV needs to find...

#19 Prospect: Kyle Bigos

Winter 2011: #19Not Previously RankedKyle Bigos has made good progress since being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2009. The 22-year old from Upland, Californa has played in Canadian hotspots like Wilcox, SK and Vernon, BC in an effort to make his way as a hockey player. No one should question his level of dedication to the game, at least no one who has spent a winter's day in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. Kyle Bigos has had a stealth development since 2009 summer. Not a lot of things leaked out of Merrimack aside from "hits hard" and "he's a big guy" but that changed last summer. The Oilers organization started to talk about Bigos as a guy who was developing as a prospect and a player of interest in their estimation.Stu MacGregor: "His game has done nothing but get better. A young man whose development curve is just beginning to move forward. Great shot, skates well for a big guy, he's someone we see huge potential in down the road."Mike Sillinge...

Monday Hockey Thoughts In Mid-November

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC, • Those Fedor Tyutin/Evgeni Nabokov trade rumours were insane. Tyutin’s part of the solution, not the problem, in Columbus. Here’s what happened. After Thursday’s loss to Chicago, the team asked Tyutin and Kris Russell to stick around. We all know now Russell was traded, so somebody assumed Tyutin was gone, too. The Blue Jackets actually asked Tyutin to stay in case they needed to talk to Nikita Nikitin, who they got for Russell. Nikitin doesn’t speak much English.

• Word is that Nabokov has not been asked to lift his no-move clause. And Garth Snow told Hotstover Eric Francis that there isn’t a lot of interest. I still think the Islanders want this three-headed goalie monster to go away.

• One NHL GM: “There are a lot of us who don’t like our teams.” It’s hard to make trades, though, with so many not wishing to add salary. Will be interesting to see what happens when all of them are together for meetings Tuesday.

• Curious to see if anyone at the GM
