Weekend Afterthoughts On Jamie McDonnell, Ricky Burns, Kazuto Ioka And Others

Since Patrick Connor already had you covered for Friday Night Fights and I already had you covered for ShoBox on an already-light week, there normally would be little need for any Weekend Afterthoughts. But a few contenders of note were in action, including a few who found themselves amid some drama, so here's a drizzling of W.A.'s:

Jamie McDonnell vs. Julio Ceja. This was the bout of the weekend -- two contenders wringing every ounce of sweat out of their bodies and fighting at a high level. In the end, McDonnell had just a smidge more technique, movement and overall ability than the more brawling-oriented Ceja, pulled away for a majority decision and probably established himself as a top-5 bantamweight in the process (although it's a thinner division these days than just a year or two ago). McDonnell pulled away in the 12th after a hotly-contested 11th where Ceja landed a big left hook. I did not closely score the fight because most people seemed to agree while...

Video: Ricky Burns post-fight presser, comeback victory over Gonzalez

Well, it didn't exactly go as planned, but Ricky Burns emerged as the victor on Saturday night in Glasgow, Scotland, sending home Puerto Rican challenger Jose Gonzalez with the first loss of his career, and notching another successful defense of his WBO lightweight title. Burns though fell behind early in the fight, and seemed to be heading towards a loss. He needed to ratchet up the heat and begin looking for a big knockout.
Right here, you'll find a video of the post-fight presser from the Burns vs. Gonzalez fight, and you'll see what Burns and his team have to say about the performance and the entire bout.

Burns gets credited with a 9th round TKO victory, with Gonzalez retiring after the round. After taking a good deal of punishment as Burns soared back into the fight, Gonzalez stayed on his stool, also citing a hand injury. Burns was behind on the scorecards of all three judges, and as mentioned, had to begin looking to turn things around several rounds earlier afte...

Burns retains WBO lightweight title

Ricky Burns kept his minor WBO lightweight belt when unbeaten challenger Jose Gonzalez of Puerto Rico retired after the ninth round on Saturday.

Gonzalez, the winner of 22 fights, 17 by knockout, stayed on his stool because of a suspected broken wrist.

Burns (36-2, 11 KO) started better but Gonzalez troubled the champion in the sixth round and a brutal seventh, subduing the partisan crowd. Gonzalez was hesitant in the ninth, and though he quit afterward, he led on the judges' scorecards.

''I knew the rounds were close. The judges had me behind,'' Burns said. ''I couldn't believe how awkward he is. I take my hat off to him, he is a class, class opponent. He's very hard to hit.''

Ricky Burns (36-2, 11KOs) outlasted Jose Gonzalez (22-1, 17KOs) in Scotland on Saturday night to earn the RTD win and retain his WBO lightweight title. The differences in ability and style between the two men created one of the best fights this year though it ended both excitingly and disappointingly.
Ricky Burns not concerned with the power of Gonzalez

Ricky Burns says that he is not concerned by Jose Gonzalez’s KO ratio as he prepares to defend his WBO lightweight title in Betfair’s ‘Fighting Pride of Scotland’ on May 11 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports.
The mandatory challenger comes to Scotland with 17 KOs from 22 wins and after Burns was floored by Gonzalez’s fellow Puerto Rican ‘Rocky’ Roman Martinez in the first round of their title clash in September 2010.
Burns showed true grit to climb off the canvas and rip the title from Martinez, and the 30 year old says he proved that night that he can handle anything thrown at him.
“His knockout ratio doesn’t concern me at all,” said Burns. “When I fought Martinez he was knocking everybody out and after the first round when I got caught clean I was fine. I have been in with big punchers before so I will just go in there and do what I have to do.
“I think Gonzalez is a totally different fighter [to Martinez]. He switch hits, he likes to catch you with a big left hook;

Undefeated Jose Gonzalez ready to take out Ricky Burns

Jose Gonzalez has warned Ricky Burns he’s willing to go to the trenches to rip the Scotsman’s WBO lightweight title from him in Betfair’s ‘Fighting Pride of Scotland’ show on May 11 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports.
The Puerto Rican travels to Scotland confident of upsetting the Coatbridge star, and despite a formidable KO record of 17 from 22 fights, the unbeaten mandatory challenger says he’s prepared to go the distance to rip the title from Burns’ hands.
“I’ve been able to get a lot of knockouts through my power but on May 11 I have to box as well as Ricky Burns from the first bell until the last,” said Gonzalez. “The fans over there can expect to see me at my best and be pleased with the show that they’re going to see. We know we’ve got a tough fight and it’ll be very hard to win on points in Scotland but we will be victorious.

Santander hires Cervera as 3rd coach of season

Racing Santander has hired its third coach of the season, signing Alvaro Cervera from Recreativo Huelva until the end of the season.

The struggling Spanish club this week fired Juan Jose Gonzalez, who led a three-man coaching crew that had replaced Hector Cuper in December. Santander is 18th in the league and three points from safety.

Cervera's contract with Recreativo Huelva was dissolved. The former Santander player got off Recreativo's team bus at a service station near Seville to return and negotiate his new deal while the second-division club continued on to Almeria for a match.

Cervera, a former Spain international, is expected to be on the sidelines Sunday when Santander hosts three-time defending champion Barcelona at the Sardinero stadium.

Racing Santander has reduced its three-man coaching staff to two by firing Juan Jose Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, who was let go on Wednesday, had been appointed with Fede Castanos and Pablo Pinillos as coaches with relatively equal responsibility after head coach Hector Cuper was fired in December.

Castanos and Pinillos will now lead the team for its final 13 games of the season.

Santander is in 18th place and three points from safety in the Spanish league standings. The club is winless in seven games going into Sunday's match at its Sardinero stadium against defending champion Barcelona.

Santander to stick with 3 coaches for season

Racing Santander says it plans to stick with its three-man coaching team until the end of the season.

Juan Jose Gonzalez, Fede Castanos and Pablo Pinillos took over after Argentine coach Hector Cuper was fired with the club in last place. The financially stricken Spanish club plans to stick with its current trio for the remaining 22 games after it moved up to 19th, one point off 17th place and safety from the drop.

Santander says in a statement that ''the club have closed the current uncertainty of the Racing bench, giving the coaches the stability needed to successfully continue their work.''

Racing plays last-place Zaragoza in its next league match on Jan. 7.
