Providence Bruins and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins brawl during AHL playoffs

On Saturday night the Providence Bruins were unable to close out their Calder Cup AHL playoff series against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as they lost 4-0 and the Penguins forced a game six. The Bruins refused to just take the loss quietly though and the brawl that ensued certainly set the stage for an interesting game six on Monday.
The Bruins and Penguins combined for 117 penalty minutes with the majority coming from Bruins forward Graham Mink, who received a match penalty for attempting to injure Penguins goalie Brad Theissen. Mink went after Theissen after Theissen had frozen the puck and started throwing punches at him for no reason as Theissen laid there and tried to protect himself. The referee did a good job to dive on top of Mink to try and break the two up, since Mink was just wailing on Theissen. According to AHL rules, Mink will be fined $200 and the penalty will be reviewed by the league for supplemental discipline.
Two minutes later after Penguins forward Pau...

Providence Bruins Brawl With Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins During Playoff Game (Video)

Playoffs aren’t usually the time for line brawls, but every now and then, the emotion gets the better of two teams, especially if the game is already out of hand. That’s what happened Saturday between the Providence Bruins and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during their AHL playoff game.
With the P-Bruins trailing 3-0 in their second-round series with the Penguins, things got a little out of hand in front of Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen. At 14:37, a Providence player fell into Thiessen and that set off just about everyone on the ice. The two teams paired up and started to scrap all over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton zone. When it was all said and done, 52 penalty minutes were handed out for the altercation.
Just a couple of minutes later, as the Penguins scored to make it 4-0, Providence goalie Niklas Svedberg slashed Paul Thompson in front of the Providence net, and that led to another brouhaha.
Game 6 is slated for Monday in Providence.

Connecticut Whale 2, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 0

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, January 6, 2013 - After watching Cam Talbot pick up his first shutout of the season in Hartford on Friday, Jason Missiaen decided he wanted one too. Supported by two goals from Kyle Jean, the Connecticut Whale skated to a 2-0 victory over the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, despite being outshot by a margin of 35-18. The Whale earned five points over a three-game weekend, to gain ground in the Northeast Division standings.

Brandon Segal set the tone in the first 90 seconds when he delivered a hard check to Dominik Uher behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goal. Christian Thomas followed suit and dumped Bobby Farnham on the way to the net minutes later.

In his eighth start of the year, Missiaen was tested early and often. Shots from Paul Thompson, Philippe Dupuis, and Warren Peters were all turned aside in the first five minutes.

Although Missiaen saw most of the rubber early on, the Whale put together some quality plays. Kris Newbury pulled...

The Charlotte Checkers vs. the rest of the AHL

In case you haven't heard, the Charlotte Checkers have one the best offenses in the American Hockey League. Even after being shutout by the Texas Stars last night, they still have scored more goals than any other team in the league and have been held to three or fewer goals in only five games this season. They are also the only team in the AHL to currently have at least five players with five or more goals, so the scoring has been relatively spread out amongst the forward corps. The NHL and the Hurricanes might be MIA for the time being, but the Checkers are at least doing their job of keeping hockey interesting in the Carolinas.
The start the Checkers are off to has gotten a lot of fans excited about some of the Canes younger prospects, namely Zach Boychuk who has been a point-per-game player for most of the year, but Charlotte isn't the only team in the league with a high-powered offense. The NHL's absence has led to there being a massive talent increase across the en...

Scranton shuts out Connecticut

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3, Connecticut Whale 0
Wilkes-Barre, PA, April 7, 2012 – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goaltender Scott Munroe shut out the Connecticut Whale for the third time on the season, and second in just over a week, Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, making 27 saves in a 3-0 Penguin win.
Munroe also blanked the Whale last Friday night in Hartford, with 32 stops in another 3-2 verdict.
Rookie defenseman Simon Despres had the game-winning goal and an assist for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, which also got goals from Bryan Lerg and Geoff Walker. Chad Johnson made 24 saves in the Whale net, including one on a Nick Petersen penalty shot at the end of the second period.
The loss dropped the Whale to 35-25-7-5 on the year and, combined with Adirondack’s 5-3 win at Albany, kept Connecticut’s magic number for clinching a playoff spot at three points.
The only goal of a fast-paced first period came at the 12:16 mark, when Despres scored his fifth of the ...
