Peter Tessier: Jets Thoughts & Game Day vs Carolina

It seems almost fitting that today's game against the Hurricanes coincides with the return of Jets defenseman Zach Redmond to playing hockey, albeit a conditioning stint with the St. John's Ice Caps. It was during a morning skate in Carolina where Redmond and teamate Antti Miettinen collided with the latter's skate landing on the upper thigh of Redmond slicing his leg wide open in a gushing p...

Zach Redmond reveals nasty scar after his horrifying injury

Zach Redmond is pretty lucky to be in a position where he can consider a return to the NHL. In fact, Redmond is extremely fortunate to even be alive. If you recall, Redmond suffered a horrifying injury back on February 21st when a teammate accidentally stepped on his leg during practice, slicing his leg open and cutting the femoral artery. Thanks to the quick actions of teammates and team doctors out on the ice, Redmond not only survived, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Roughly six weeks later, Redmond is back on the ice skating and has one of the ugliest scars in the NHL.

Be warned - the photo below is not for the faint of heart.

"It’s nothing short of a miracle considering what’s he’s been through. We’re all aware of what happened. Considering the magnitude of the injury and the insult, not only to the leg but the whole body, it’s quite miraculous."

-Winnipeg Jets head physician Dr. Peter MacDonald regarding Zach Redmond skating today.

In case you don't recall what happened to Redmond...

Redmond had his femoral artery lacerated by teammate Antti Miettinen’s skate during a practice in Raleigh, North Carolina in late February.

Winnipeg’s Zach Redmond shows scar from when femoral artery was cut (Picture)

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Redmond is lucky to be alive, and he now has a massive scar to remind him of that on a daily basis. In February, Redmond had his femoral artery slashed by a skate during practice and underwent three-hour emergency surgery. The injury occurred during a practice drill in front of the net, and blood reportedly pooled onto the ice as trainers tended to the 24-year-old.
As you might expect, the laceration required a lot of stitches and staples to close. CBS Sports’ Mitch Peacock shared a photo of Redmonds scar on Friday, and it helps give us an idea of just how horrifying the injury must have been.
A massive scar like this might look a bit more alarming since it’s on a player’s head, but Redmond’s injury was no less dangerous. We’re glad to see he has recovered nicely and was able to avoid any serious long-term damage.

Zach Redmond Shows Off Gruesome Scar After Skate Split His Leg Wide Open (Photo)

Scars are just as much a part of hockey as pucks, pads and swear words.
Zach Redmond, who was cut by teammate Antti Miettinen’s skate during a practice at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Feb. 21, has made a “miraculous” recovery, Jets team physician Dr. Peter MacDonald told the Winnipeg Free Press.
And he’s got the cool scar to prove it, as seen below.

Zach Redmond reveals scar from horrific injury

Cited by doctors as a “miracle” recovery, Winnipeg Jets forward Zach Redmond was back on the ice skating on Friday morning, only a little more than a month after suffering a lacerated femoral artery after a teammate’s skate gashed his upper leg. Jets team doctor Peter MacDonald was quoted in the Winnipeg Press as stating that the team expects Redmond back in training camp next fall, referring to that timetable as “nothing short of a miracle.” A photo revealing the ghastly scar on Redmond’s upper right leg provided sufficient and disturbing evidence of just how much damage was done when a teammate stepped on the back of his leg with his skate during a morning skate in late February. Via a tweet from the CBC’s Mitch Peacock: Yikes. And while the scar is a grim reminder of just how severe the injury was and how much worse it could have been for Redmond, what’s far more important is astounding doctor’s by making a remarkable, unexpected and unbelievable comeback so soon.
Redmond's artery lacerated by skate

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Redmond underwent three hours of surgery Thursday afternoon after his right femoral artery and a vein were lacerated by an ice skate during a morning practice drill.Redmond, who was cut mid-thigh, was taken to a nearby Raleigh hospital for treatment. Winnipeg is in town to visit the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night."What took place is we were trying to get our extra players conditioned, there was a 1-on-1 battle at the net and (Redmond) was tripped up, ended up on his back and the player happened to step on him just above the back of the knee," Jets coach Claude Noel told the Winnipeg Sun. "It's a fairly wide cut, so we're taking him to the hospital and we'll see what the diagnosis is when they take a look at him there. He lost a fair bit of blood and he's in some pain. It looks like it's a vein. It's tough on your team."The team released the following statement on the incident:"Zach is currently restin...

Winnipeg’s Zach Redmond Suffers Serious Cut In Practice

via Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press,

Winnipeg Jets' defenceman Zach Redmond was taken away by an ambulance this morning after suffering a serious cut to the back of his leg during a morning practice at PNC Arena.

The rookie blueliner was apparently slashed by a falling teammate's skate.

Several players and assistant coaches huddled around Redmond after it happened. Head coach Claude Noel was off the ice when the injury occurred.

Once the players cleared away, a lot of blood could be seen on the ice, and players like Antti Miettinen and Anthony Peluso came off the ice with blood stains visible on their socks and jerseys.
