NFL Predictions

Holy Bristol Palin, it's been almost 5 years since the last real NFL football game was played. Rocco & Tiger, Steven Curry, Michael Phelps, and Big Brown did their best to distract us. Yet every night I wake up in cold sweats...disgruntled as Robert Meachem is now everyone's sexy sleeper pick...confused as how Ocho Cinco translates to "eight five" and not "eighty five"...and dumbfounded as how "Luggagegate" was given priority over the shooting of a offensive lineman.

Here are my ten predictions for the 2008-09 NFL Season.

1. Giants lost too much. Departed Strahan, Shockey, Wilson, and the injury to Umenyiora will prove to be too much for this team that relied heavily on pass rush. Kevin Boss, TE, will be decent in filling in for Shockey and Justin Tuck will be more than formidable as the #1 DE, but weaknesses in LB and DB will be exposed now that the Giants lost too much on the D-line. So....

2. Giants will miss the playoffs. They are stacked at WR and RB, which should help Manning improve on his 23 TD/20 INT 2008 season. But in order for this team to make the playoffs, D-coordinator Steve Spagnolo will have to dial up many different looks and blitzes to mask the Giants' weaknesses in the secondary and at LB.

3. The Browns will fall back to earth. They have a really tough schedule and Derek Anderson (concussion) might still be seeing stars during the first snap of the season. They do play in a less-than-formidable division, but they should not overtake the Steelers.

4. Fantasy Sleepers: Rashard Mendenhall, Robert Meachem, and DeSean Jackson.

First-Mendenhall. Steelers RB Willie Parker will get a lot of carries and yards, but he is coming off a broken right leg and a season in which he only scored 2 TDs. Look for Mendenhall, a power runner, to get carries down by the goal line and maybe emerge as this year's Boo Williams

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gp9tyGwzww8/SMAIwnFLteI/AAAAAAAAA9M/ap9MDMVhCL4/s320/img.59505_t.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242199597476722146" />

Meachem. Last season was a lost year for the former UTenn star after being placed on IR. I watched two of his games this preseason, and he should emerge as the #2 receiver on the pass-happy Saints. He will be Drew Brees' deep target.

Jackson. His size can cause many to question his durability, but he is a straight route runner, which could limit the chances of him going over the middle and being annihilated by big hitters. He is a playmaker who showed blazing speed and confidence during the preseason as both a receiver and returner. P.S. don't forget about Kurt Warner too...

5. The most productive QB fantasy wise will be Drew Brees. New Orleans had trouble with pass blocking last year, but Birthmark Brees still threw for more yards than any other QB last year. He has an added threat in Shockey, and Deuce returns which will help jump-start their running game.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gp9tyGwzww8/SMAI3xKmd6I/AAAAAAAAA9U/8xSNhPlDPgY/s200/drew%2Bbrees_120106.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242199720442886050" />

6. Patriots will be the top team in the regular season again, but with much more (3) losses. Look for their secondary to be exposed (Ellis Hobbs and Fernando Bryant are far from shut-downs) after losing Asante Samuel and Eugene Wilson. But they are still playing in the worst division in football, even if Buffalo and New York Jets are on the upswing.

7. The Lions will win the NFC Central. The Vikings' wont be able to rely on the NFL's second-best RB for a whole season (AP will require 8 men in the box and his running style will lead to more injuries), the Packers have loads of talent around Aaron Rodgers, yet this he's still a huge question mark, and the Bears, two seasons removed from the Super Bowl, don't have enough on defense to carry neck beard to 10 wins. The Lions will do just enough with Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson leading the running game to win the division.

8. Seattle will emerge out of the NFC to reach the Super Bowl. They have the best DBs in the league. Matt Hasselbeck destroyed opposing defenses with a non-existent running game. And Seattle's special teams are among the best in the league.

9. The Steelers will win the AFC

10. Super Bowl Champions: Seattle Seahawks.

Next Weeks predictions done by this guy..

Patriots sign CB Deltha O'Neal

As overheard on WEEI, the New England Patriots have signed cornerback Deltha O'Neal. O'Neal a for former first round pick by the Denver Broncos and a two time pro-bowler was released by the Cinncinnati Bengals and will bring more experience to the defensive back position since Jason Webster and Fernando Bryant were released over the past week.

The Patriots are still trying to improve their defensive backs position since the loss of Asante Samuel and Randall Gay during the offseason.

Tight-end Stephen Spach was released to make room for O'Neal.

Pats' "final" roster has some surprises in the corner

The New England Patriots, along with every other NFL team, released enough players to get down to the 53-man roster requirement. As is usually the case, there were some surprise cuts and some surprise players who made the roster. One surprise cut/keeper was the cut of QB Matt Gutierrez in favor of QB Matt Cassel. Cassel really had a poor preseason, and while Gutierrez wasn't much better, he did lead the team to the end zone. Cassel could only muster 2 field goals the entire preseason. The surprises didn't stop there.

With Kevin Faulk suspended for the first game of the season due to having marijuana in his possession earlier in the year, the Patriots were able to hold onto one extra player, as Faulk does not count against the 53-man roster. Now, of course, the roster can change in a heart beat as the personnel department looks at who they could possibly pick up to bolster the roster. Players could also be brought back due to injuries/suspensions. Here are some cuts that came as a surprise to me:

    * QB Matt Gutierrez

    * CB Fernando Bryant - Bryant put in a lot of time in preseason games, and he didn't really impress. Despite starting each preseason game, his coverage was notably soft and his tackling was pure. Recall that in the first preseason game, he was yanked early for poor coverage and then in the finale against the Giants, he was driven into the end zone by the Giants' back-up TE Darcy Johnson on the Giants' opening scoring drive.

    * C Mike Flynn - This cut actually came yesterday, but surprised me nonetheless. I thought he played well in the preseason finale and had the experience and position flexibility to be a valuable back-up. I put Flynn near the top of emergency call-backs.

    * LB Vince Redd - I thought Redd, an undrafted rookie, showed enough solid play on defense and special teams to make the roster. If he clears waivers (a big 'if' in my opinion), I would expect him to land on the Patriots' practice squad.

For a full list of cuts and players placed on IR, click here.

The following are the keepers that surprised me:

    * QB Matt Cassel

    * WR/S Ray Ventrone - I was really pulling for him to make the team. He reminds me of a poor man's Wes Welker, and his retention might actually reflect the severity of Welker's injury suffered in the 3rd preseason game. Let's hope not.

    * WR/KR C.J. Jones - Here's another player I was pulling for to make the cut. He has shown terrific ability to return kicks, but I'm surprised he made the roster because he has had his bouts with fumblitis.

    * C/G Dan Connolly - Connolly had some QB exchange problems, including a memorable shotgun snap that sailed over Cassel and was returned for a TD by Tampa Bay. He has also been injured, so I figured he was a PUP/IR candidate. I figured Flynn was going to take Connolly's place for at least this year.

    * S/KR Matthew Slater - Slater showed flashes of ability returning kicks, but I figured it would be either CJ Jones or Matthew Slater to stick, not both. One of these guys could be candidates to be cut when Kevin Faulk returns after his suspension.

Here's the 2008/2009 New England Patriots' 53-man roster, as it stands now, position by position:

Quarterback: Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Kevin O'Connell

Runningback:Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, LaMont Jordan, Heath Evans

Wide Receiver: Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Chad Jackson, Sam Aiken, Ray Ventrone, CJ Jones, Kelley Washington

Tight End:Benjamin Watson, David Thomas, Stephen Spach

Offensive Line:Dan Koppen, Logan Mankins, Matt Light, Wesley Britt, Dan Connolly, Russ Hochstein, Nick Kaczur, Billy Yates

Defensive Line: Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, Jarvis Green, Mike Wright, Le Kevin Smith

Linebackers:Tedy Bruschi, Jerod Mayo, Mike Vrabel, Adalius Thomas, Gary Guyton, Larry Izzo, Eric Alexander, Pierre Woods, Shawn Crable

Cornerbacks: Ellis Hobbs, Lewis Sanders, Terrence Wheatley, Jonathon Wilhite

Safeties: Rodney Harrison, James Sanders, Brandon Meriweather, John Lynch, Matthew Slater

Special Teams:Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, Punter Chris Hanson, Long Snapper Lonie Paxton

One thing that stands out to me is the fact that the Pats kept only 4 corners, two of which are rookies. Now there is flexibility with safeties, most notably Meriweather, who can play nickel corner. It could also be a reflection of the team's first opponent, Kansas City. The Pats have more to worry about in terms of the running game than getting beat by K.C.'s air attack. The signing of Ty Law is also a possibility. It will be interesting to see how things shake up once the Pats scour the cuts from other teams and also who will get released when Kevin Faulk returns.

The following are more well-known players cut by other teams that I feel could be picked up by the Patriots:

    * QB Chris Simms - the Pats would instantly have a legitimate back-up QB who has led a team to the playoffs

    * Offensive tackle Willie Anderson - the former Pro Bowler could play right tackle or serve as a veteran back-up who could help solidify what has been a suspect offensive line

    * CB Deltha O'Neal

    * CB Tyrone Poole - knows the system and could return if the Pats were in a real pinch

Pats Set Final Roster

The Pats cut their roster down to the required 53 players today and there were a couple surprises. The biggest would have to be the release of CB Fernando Bryant. Bryant was a staple in the preseason starting lineup and seemed like he had sewn up the job of replacing Asante Samuel. Alas, now he's gone and it looks like rookie Terrence Wheatley or vet Lewis Sanders will now be starting opposite Ellis Hobbs.I guess seeing Bryant get steamrolled by a Giants running back into the end zone Thursday night should've been an indication that he could be in trouble.The other surprise is that Matt Cassel is still on the team while Matt Guttierrez has been let go. While many thought Gute outperformed Cassel, clearly the Patriots did not. Kevin O'Connell slips into the third quarterback spot with the potential to be Tom Brady's backup in 2009 when Cassel's deal expired.Though Cassel apparently played well enough to hold on to his job, I doubt he played well enough to earn a contract extension.The surprises who made the team include Sam Aiken, a WR who will contribute on special teams, as well as undrafted rookie LB Gary Guyton. Guyton was all over the field on Thursday night, leading the team with 10 tackles. He's clearly got the speed that the Pats have been lacking from the position in years past.Ray Ventrone is another surprise, and another one of those swiss army knife-type players Belichick loves. He can do a little of everything and might even see some time at slot receiver should Wes Welker miss any games.Cut players who are candidates to be on the practice squad include Vince Redd, another undrafted rookie LB who showed some promise, Antwan Spann, who likely had his roster spot taken by John Lynch, and Mike Richardson, who hasn't been healthy in his two years with the team.One area to keep an eye on will be on the offensive line. With Stephen Neal and Russ Hochstein both out with injuries it was somewhat of a surprise to see both vets John Welbourn and Mike Flynn cut. This makes Dan Connolly the only remaining healthy back-up at guard. Hopefully it's a sign that Hochstein is close to returning.It's doubtful Flynn or Welbourn will catch on elsewhere, so it's good to know they are available should the injuries mount anymore.The 2008 Patriots team is set, one week from Sunday it all begins.

Pats Roster at 53 After Cuts and Roster Moves

The AFC Champion Pats made moves today to get their roster to 53. Gone are the following players: DL Titus Adams, CB Fernando Bryant, TE Tyson DeVree, S Mark Dillard, C Mark Flynn, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, QB Matt Gutierrez, LB Victor Hobson, LB Vince Redd, CB Mike Richardson, T Stephen Sene, DB Antwain Spann, DL Santonio Thomas, and G John Welbourn. The team also put tackle Oliver Ross (shoulder) on the reserve/non-football injury list, while linebacker Bo Ruud (ankle) and defensive lineman Kenny Smith (arm) were placed on the reserve/injured list.

5 Keyz: Preseason Pats vs. Giants

The end of the preseason is finally upon us and we're mere days away from games that actually count. It will be nice to finally put both this preseason and last season's devastating end behind us. The fourth preseason game is traditionally the least interesting, often times starters don't even play more than a series or two. If Tom Brady's absence from practice Tuesday is any indicator, it's probably a safe bet he won't even suit up. Brady's been having some fun with the media this week. First, there was his infamous walking cast lying in his locker on Monday. That of course led some (like the Boston Herald) to speculate it might mean his 'deep foot bruise' was more serious than anyone was letting on, despite Brady looking fine at practice. Then on Tuesday a pair of crutches were lying in his locker and the brilliant beat reporters started to catch on that it was probably Brady messing with them. By Wednesday there will probably be a wheelchair in there. Gotta love a star quarterback with a sense of humor. Anyway, on to our final Keyz of the preseason... 1. Let's See Gute with the Ones – I'd really like to see Matt Gutierrez get the start and go against the first team defense from the Giants. Cassel has had three games with the ones and unless you've been in cave you probably know he hasn't been so good. Don Banks of SI.com didn't even rank him in his back-up quarterback ratings. "Gute" may be third to last in Banks ratings but he's done pretty well against the backups, so let's see how he does against top notch competition. 2. Corners Got Back – With the release of Jason Webster the cornerback situation is starting to take shape. Ellis Hobbs, Fernando Bryant and Terrence Wheatley are clearly the top three. After that the picture is a little more hazy. Rookie Jonathan Wilhite just got his first game action last week. Lewis Sanders has been in and out with injuries. With Safeties John Lynch and Brandon Meriweather assured siginificant playing time the Pats might only keep four corners. Look to see who's playing where and with who Thursday night. The Pats almost always experience injuries at the corner position during the season. Quality depth here is critical.3. O-line in the Sand – Though Matt Light returned to practice this week it's probably doubtful that he'll play Thursday night. But with his return we can be sure that the Offensive Line will just about be back to full strength for the opener. The only question mark will be at Right Guard. With Stephen Neal being put on the regular season PUP list Tuesday, he's out at least the first six games of the season. The candidates to replace him: Mike Flynn, John Welbourn and Billy Yates are currently the healthy ones, and Russ Hochstein could be in the mix as well once he returns to practice after being injured earlier in the preseason. Welbourn and Flynn have a lot of flexibility and both could be in the mix. It wouldn't even be out of the question to see Flynn starting at Right Guard and Welbourn replacing Nick Kaczur at Right Tackle should he be ineffective. Regardless it will be interesting to see how the line plays out, especially at Right Guard. Look to see who's starting there Thursday night, it could be an indicator of who will be there week one.4. The Chad Gotta Bring It – It doesn't sound like Wes Welker's rib injury is serious but if he even misses one game the Pats are going to need something out of The Chad. He had his best game against the Eagles, but one nice touchdown grab in the preseason doesn't mean much unless he continues to build on it. Hopefully Welker will be back and ready to go week one and Chad can just relax and play. That's probably the best recipe for success. It will also be interesting to see if The Chad gets any punt returns like he was before Welker came off PUP. 5. Remember the Super Bowl – I can't say I'm surprised that there hasn't been much talk about any sour feelings about seeing the Giants again so soon after they ended the Pats season in February. Of course, you'll never hear words like "revenge" or "payback" out of Bill Belichick's team. But I know that just seeing those blue helmets lined up across from them again will be a nice reminder of how 2007 came to a tragic end and should be good fuel on the fire just before the 2008 campaign begins.

Despite a Win; First Preseason Outing Showed Little

The Baltimore Ravens exhibition win over the New England Patriots last Thursday was uneventful except for the following:(1) Ravens HC John Harbaugh had the team playing crisp, mistake-free football for the most part unlike the team's past performances under former HC Brian Billick;(2) the Ravens QB picture is still clouded since none of the three contestants distinguished themselves; and(3) the most impressive Ravens players were DT Justin Bannan, WR/KR Yamon Figurs, RB Ray Rice, DB Haruki Nakamura and LB Brenden Ayanbadejo;and (4) the best play of the night involved a 52-yard punt return by Figurs down to the NE 2-yard line where the speedster was caught from behind by LB Gary Guyton of the Patriots. It reminded me of the play where Washington Redskin DB Darryl Green caught Dallas Cowboy RB Tony Dorsett from behind at the 2-yard after a ninety-eight yard run.
P.S. If I was the Patriots I would be pursuing a trade for a starting left CB after watching the Ravens QB Kyle Boller open the game with 3 completed consecutive passes to WR Derrick Mason over CB Fernando Bryant. IMO a possible trade with the Philadelphia Eagles could fetch disgruntled left CB Lito Sheppard for WR Chad Jackson and a 2009 second-day draft pick.

Pats Vs. Ravens: 5 Keyz to Victory

OK, I know it's the preseason and having a "Keys to Victory" story is kind of pointless since a victory doesn't really matter. After all, the Colts have lost 13 of their last 15 preseason games and they've done just fine (if you don't count the postseason, of course).So, instead, here are five things to keep an eye on Thursday night when the 2008 Pats kick off their preseason schedule versus the Ravens. 1. Nobody Get Hurt! Seriously, the Pats could lose 70-0 and I really wouldn't care as long as no one got injured. Okay, maybe I'd be a little concerned if they lost that bad, but nothing can derail a team faster than a preseason season-ending injury to someone important. We have no choice but to leave this one in the hands of the Football Gods, so I'm going to stop writing about it for fear of bringing on any kind of curse or jinx. Just pray someone upstairs isn't looking to punish us for last year. 2. Battle of the Back-UpsSo far, neither Matt Cassell, Matt Gutierrez, nor rookie Kevin O'Connell have been exactly lighting it up in camp, but Thursday night will be a chance for one of them to pull away from the pack (I hope). Early indications are that Tom Brady, as well as many other vets, will have the night off. In a perfect world, Cassell would lead a couple touchdown drives with zero instances of tucking the ball and running because he doesn't want to risk throwing an interception. Stuff like that is fine if you're Vince Young; if you haven't started a game since high school and want to prove you're a viable NFL backup, not so much. I wouldn't complain if Kevin O'Connell flashed some kind of brilliance, either.3. Bring the Pain, RooksThis could be the first time in a long time that rookies see significant minutes on defense once the regular season rolls around. But first they've got to prove they've got what it takes to play in an NFL game. By all accounts Jerod Mayo has been living up to expectations in practice. He's fast, physical, and seems to be grasping Bill Belichick's complicated defense. Meanwhile, Terrence Wheatley has also impressed despite getting lit up from time to time by Randy Moss (show me an NFL corner who doesn't).As for the rest of the rookies, like Shawn Crable, Jonathan Wilhite (who probably won't play after pulling up lame Monday night), Gary Guyton and Vince Redd, among others, this will be a chance to see who the "gamers" are. All will surely get significant playing time. And don't call any of them Shirley.4. We Need an O-line Depth ChargeAs I've touched on constantly the last week, my biggest concern for the 2008 Patriots is the offensive line. Matt Light, Stephen Neal and Ryan O'Callaghan are all probably out. The extent of each of their injuries in unknown, but the Pats have been scrambling to sign journeymen tackles so that can't be a good sign. Especially when every opponent this year will try to their best to get pressure on Brady the way the Giants did, though none of them have the talent of the G-men's defensive line.So the play of the current makeshift line, especially in the early offensive series, will be something to watch. Billy Yates and Wesley Britt need to show they are capable starters or at the very least could fill in until everyone gets healthy…if everyone gets healthy, Belichick willing.5. Free Agents Fitting In?Fernando Bryant has thus far looked capable of taking Asante Samuel's place at cornerback, now we'll see if that translates into the game. Linebacker Victor Hobson has been fairly quiet, and has been passed by Mayo on the depth chart according to some observers. But he's an NFL vet and we know he can play at this level. It will be interesting to see his play compared to Mayo once the action is live.Other Individuals to Keep an Eye On:Matthew Slater – universally described as an "explosive" kick returner, he'll need to show that explosion Thursday night if he's going to make the team.Chad Jackson – of course "The Chad" makes this list; Patriots fans are going to watching him like a hawk all preseason. He'll take some punt returns, but it will hard to judge his performance at receiver with the backup quarterbacks throwing him the ball. Still, he needs to do something to show he's ready to contribute this year.Sammy Morris & Lamont Jordan – these two could be fighting for a job, though I tend to believe both will make the roster. Regardless, both will need good games to ensure that.Antwan Spann – he's been having a great camp; that must translate into the game if he's got a shot at making the roster.Tank Williams – Belichick will most likely keep the newly installed defensive wrinkles under wraps for the preseason, but it will be interesting to see if Tank takes any reps at linebacker like he has been doing in practice.We'll be back this weekend with a full analysis of how all this mess plays out Thursday night. Until then, Go Pats! PatriotsPropaganda@gmail.com

Free Agency not urgent for Patriots

With free agency seemingly dead in the water, there are still a few NFL teams looking to fill needs, but will they wait for the draft or take a veteran they know will add value?

It is interesting to see how 2008 has been similar for the Patriots to free agency periods before 2007. There was too much hype on the Patriots in 2007 and now media pundits feel the Patriots have had a terrible offseason due to losing Asante Samuel, Randall Gay and Eugene Wilson from their secondary and cutting Rosevelt Colvin.

Jamie recently gave a review on the Patriots free agency moves and outlines his thoughts and grades. Although the Patriots have found a few additions in the secondary with CB Fernando Bryant (lions), S Tank Williams (Vikings), CB Lewis Sanders (Falcons), CB Jason Webster (Bills), these players seem to be often injured and decent replacements for the likes of Gay and Wilson or at the very least special teamers.

Dom Capers knows a few of these players and they all seem to be tough physical kind of guys he likes to have to play up in the box. I am hoping that Capers is able to improve the secondary and I agree with Jamie, 'if Bryant is the starter alongside Ellis Hobbs to start the season, I don't like the Patriots' chances to make it back to the Super Bowl'.

Ty Law is still available (as well as Hank Poteat), but even then I do not like to depend on him to start the whole season. The draft is deep with cornerbacks more so then safeties, so I see Meriweather playing safety in 2008 rather then filling in at corner as he did in early 2007. If Law does join he along with Capers should be able to bring along the young talent into the Belchick mindset relatively quickly. Worse case scenario Troy Brown returns as a nickle back and the Pats at least said no to 'Pac Man' Jones.

Overall, I disagree that cornerback is the top need for the Patriots this offseason as the Patriots have often filled the voids in the secondary with players off the street and have used quantity over quality.

If we look at the Patriots roster, the greater need is still youth at linebacker with only Pierre Woods and Eric Alexander are the only 'veterans' (sorry Izzo is special teams and comes in on goal line defenses) behind Tedy Bruschi, AD Thomas and Mike Vrabel. They have never played well enough to even come in during the early blowouts in 2007…
TJ Slaughter was recently signed and Panthers Adam Seward (RFA) was brought in for a check up with no contract given. These are back-ups not starters even if they figure out the Patriots system.

Junior Seau is still surfing and has not made up his mind to return and the Pats may be interested in Takeo Spikes, but age is still a concern.

So sure the Patriots did re-sign a few key players like Randy Moss and Lonie Paxton. And Tedy Bruschi is old and slow, but still a team leader and play maker having the most tackles on the team in 2007 - not bad!

I think keeping Gaffney is great as he adds value with Stallworth gone, the others that were re-signed are all fillers and not game changers and talent to get to the Super Bowl.

I would grade the free agency as a D, based on the Patriots not doing enough to fill the gaps and not much opportunity to draft starters in the draft.

Having said that …

Detroit Lions Release Cornerback Fernando Bryant!

The Lions just released veteran cornerback Fernando Bryant. I would think the Eagles will go after him and while he is not Asante Samuel he would be a significant upgrade over James and Hanson at the nickel corner position and he would provide much better depth. He is 30 years old and still has a few good years left. Should be a much cheaper option at cornerback.

Fernando Bryant likely to retire

Poor Fernando. Three seasons pouring your heart and soul and effort into one of the worst teams in NFL history. It's a wonder the whole team doesn't retire and eat antidepressants for breakfast.

With talk of the NFL Draft increasing, the Detroit Lions may have the largest amount of ground to make up. After another season of sub-par football played well below expectations and hopes set by people across Detroit, Matt Millen may finally see his job is in jeopardy.
