Offseason Needs: Carolina Panthers

1. Defensive Tackle
The Carolina Panthers selected Sione Fua and Terrell McClain in the third round of the 2011 draft to solidify their interior line. McClain is now gone and Fua is coming off another disappointing year. The Panthers top priority this offseason needs to be to solve their issues up front on defense.
2. Wide Receiver
Steve Smith is still playing at a high level and Brandon LaFell was a solid contributor this year. But Cam Newton needs another weapon to help continue his development as a passer. In the second or third round the Panthers should consider bringing another receiver aboard.
3. Offensive line
Jordan Gross and Ryan Kalil are still locked in to starting roles. And left guard Amini Silatolu will be given at least one more year to develop. But the right side of the line is a liability. Veteran guard Geoff Hangartner and right tackle Byron Bell could both be replaced this offseason.

Panthers showing interest in defensive linemen

The Carolina Panthers have been busy preparing for the NFL Draft, already hosting at least three players for pre-draft visits.
The Panthers have reportedly met with defensive tackle Michael Brockers and defensive ends Chandler Jones and Quinton Coples. Both Coples and Brockers are likely 1st rounders, who the Panthers may consider at No. 9.
Are the Panthers targeting Brockers?
Based on the Panthers’ perceived weakness at defensive tackle, Brockers has frequently been popping up in connection with the team in mock drafts. However, the Panthers invested two 3rd-round picks in Sione Fua and Terrell McClain a season ago. Brockers is a penetrating three-technique, who would likely bump McClain from the starting lineup if he were to join the Panthers.
Defensive end was expected by many to be further down the Panthers list of needs, but their apparent interest in Coples and Jones may indicate otherwise.
Coples, a possible top-10 pick, is a true three-down lineman (when he wants to be) and ...

The Denver Broncos have signed guard C.J. Davis.
Davis was a college free agent signed by the Carolina Panthers in 2009, he was placed by injured reserve by the club after suffering an injury at the end of training camp in his rookie season. In 2010 he was signed to the active roster and participated in seven games.
Davis was waived/injury settlement in September not active in the 2011 season. He is a 6’2″ and 308 pounds out of the University of Pittsburgh where he played in 45 games with 43 starts earning first-team All-Big East Conference honors as a senior. Davis is 25 years old.
The Broncos currently have five guards on their squad.

Panthers look for stability in defensive line

This is the first part of 7-part series focusing on the position groups of the Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers were nothing short of an adventure along the defensive line in 2011. Head coach Ron Rivera wasn't always sure not only who would start on the interior from week to week, he wasn't sure who would be activated to play.

Carolina, which finished 6-10, began the season with rookies Sione Fua and Terrell McClain at tackle. As was expected, the growing pains with the newbies came with some rough Sundays. At times, the Panthers simply couldn't stop the run, and at other times the pair displayed real progress.

Anchoring the line with some stability were ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy. But run support isn't just about the guys up front, and that's where the team's heavily depleted linebacker corps compounded the youth issue up front, lending itself to some ugly performances.

But there is hope. Fua (11 starts) and McClain (12 starts) got plenty of experience and they

After absorbing the loss of rookie defensive tackles Sione Fua and Terrell McClain well Sunday, the Panthers found out Tuesday they'll have to work without the pair of third-round picks for the rest of the season.

Fua and McClain were put on injured reserve, out for the year with the injuries that forced the Panthers to go without their starting defensive tackles in the 38-19 win over Tampa Bay.

Fua strained his right hamstring in pre-game warmups while McClain sustained a sprained left knee in the second half.

Andre Neblett and Frank Kearse replaced them against the Buccaneers, earning praise for their play.

"As a group, the defensive line played well. They played physical," defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said after Sunday's game. "To have what happened to us -- with Sione going down before the game and Terrell during the game -- I thought they fought through that adverse situation. The duo had started every game since the season opener after being selected in the third round of the draft. Fua has a right hamstring strain and McClain suffered a sprained left knee.
The Panthers signed defensive tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo and added defensive tackle Jason Shirley from the team's practice squad to fill the vacated roster spots.
Carolina has lost 14 players this year to season-ending injuries.

Panthers Place Rookie DTs Terrell McClain, Sione Fua On Injured Reserve

The Carolina Panthers have placed rookie defensive tackles Terrell McClain and Sione Fua on injured reserve, Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports. McClain and Fua were bookend picks in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, with the Panthers using the first pick of the round on McClain and the last, compensatory pick of the round on Fua. A training camp injury to Ron Edwards pressed both rookies into the starting lineup, with McClain and Fua starting next to one another for the first 11 games of the season. Fua injured his hamstring during warmups before Sunday's 38-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while McClain, who played his college ball at South Florida, re-injured his knee during the game.
Panthers lose both DT's ahead of Atlanta clash

By STEVE REEDCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers are placing both starting rookie defensive tackles -- Terrell McClain and Sione Fua -- on injured reserve, a person familiar with the decisions said on Tuesday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because moves have not been announced.

Fua and McClain were both third-round draft picks this year and have been starters since week one. However, Fua suffered a significant right hamstring strain prior to Sunday's game against Tampa Bay and didn't play. McClain sprained his left knee during the first half and did not return.

It's unclear at this point if either player will need surgery.

They become the 13th and 14th players to join Carolina's lengthy list of players on injured reserve -- seven on each side of the ball. Defense, however, has been hit particularly hard. The Panthers lost starting defensive tackle Ron Edwards in training camp and then linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis the first two w

Panthers coach Ron Rivera has expressed concern about starting defensive tackles Sione Fua and Terrell McClain “hitting the wall” and wearing down as their rookie seasons progressed.
On Monday, Fua didn't hit the wall. He hit the MRI machine.
Fua and McClain are being evaluated Monday after injuries Sunday before and during the Panthers' 38-19 win at Tampa Bay.
Fua injured his hamstring in pre-game warmups and did not play. McClain re-injured an MCL sprain he suffered at Indianapolis in Week 12.
Andre Neblett and Frank Kearse took over for Fua and McClain against the Bucs. The Panthers also used defensive ends Greg Hardy, Charles Johnson and Antwan Applewhite on the interior at times.
The Panthers gave up a season-low 78 rushing yards against Tampa Bay, and limited LeGarrette Blount to 19 yards on 11 carries.

Panthers Insider: Bye will help rookies avoid "wall"

Coach Ron Rivera said the bye week is a great chance for rookies like Sione Fua, the team's starting nose tackle, to get his feet back under him.

"A great example is Sione Fua. That young man has taken a lot of snaps," Rivera said. "All the way back to training camp, I don't think he's missed a practice, a rep. He's taken on a lot, and he's one of the guys that you notice looking a little heavy-legged, a little lethargic. I think this week is really good for a kid like him to get revitalized and reset himself.

"We've got to be smart with him, too. We've got to start limiting his practice reps as well, because he's an important part of what we want to do now and what we want to do in the future."

The same, Rivera said, goes for fellow rookie starting DT Terrell McClain.

"For those rookies who have played a lot, they'll get a little break," Rivera said. "Then, for those rookies who haven't gotten a lot of work, they'll get a
