Titans' McCarthy primed for productive, healthy season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Tennessee Titans have liked what they've seen in two seasons from Colin McCarthy.

The thing is, they just havent seen the middle linebacker enough for their liking.

Ditto that feeling for McCarthy, who exploded onto the scene to earn the starting slot two seasons ago as a rookie and unheralded fourth-round draft pick out of Miami (Fla.). By the time 2012 rolled around, his defensive teammates thought highly enough of McCarthy to vote him captain.

But 2012 didn't turn out exactly as McCarthy planned. He injured his left ankle in the season opener and struggled when he wasnt made inactive for four of the first seven games. When he finally made it back, he suffered a concussion and didnt play in the final four games.

"Thats my goal to play all 16 games and, obviously, be healthy and be available when my number is called," said McCarthy on Thursday, claiming to have no ill effects from either injury that plagued him last season.

Titans LB Colin McCarthy Recovering From Ankle Surgery

Titans middle linebacker Colin McCarthy had a procedure earlier this offseason on the right ankle he injured in Week One of the 2013 season.

McCarthy sent a message via Twitter on Tuesday he’s already running again, however.

McCarthy suffered the injury on September 9 against the Patriots, and ended up missing four games. Later in the season he suffered a concussion, which caused him to miss the final five games of the regular season. He ended the season on Injured Reserve.

Concussion To Sideline Titans LB Colin McCarthy For Season Finale

Linebacker Colin McCarthy is expected to miss his ninth game of the season and fifth this year because of a concussion suffered in the Tennessee Titans' first meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

McCarthy, who had been expected to be one of the Titans defensive stars, had already missed four games with a high ankle sprain suffered in the season opener against the New England Patriots.

“It's not the way I wanted it to go, but it's football and it's part of the game. I'll deal with it and hopefully bounce back for next year,” McCarthy said Thursday.
Coach Mike Munchak revealed Thursday that the middle linebacker is out this week with one game to go.

“McCarthy will be out this week I'm sure,” Munchak said.

Munchak said Wednesday that McCarthy hasn't returned to normal in order to gain clearance.

“He just doesn’t feel 100 percent, he doesn’t feel clear enough to where he’s back to feeling normal. He just hasn’t gotten there yet. Certain things he’s been abl

Titans LB Colin McCarthy Now Dealing With A Concussion

Titans middle linebacker Colin McCarthy suffered a concussion in Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville.
He didn’t practice on Wednesday and Titans coach Mike Munchak said his status for Sunday will be determined by how he progresses the next couple of days.
“It’s one of those things where he seems to be getting better and seems to be fine, but I don’t know how that will all work out,” Munchak said.
McCarthy’s concussion wasn’t diagnosed until after Sunday’s contest.
“I think that happens a lot (to players),” Munchak said. “Guys play and unless you’re knocked out or on the ground or something … it’s hard (to diagnose a concussion).” Source: The Tennessean Attached Thumbnails

4 takeaways help Titans beat Dolphins 37-3

Colin McCarthy returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown, and four takeaways helped the Tennessee Titans beat the Miami Dolphins 37-3 Sunday.

The Titans came into the game on pace to set an NFL record for points allowed in a season, but they stymied Miami by intercepting Ryan Tannehill three times and recovering a Reggie Bush fumble to set up a touchdown.

Tennessee (4-6) rebounded from a 51-20 loss a week ago against the Bears that prompted owner Bud Adams to put the organization on notice. Last week the Titans trailed 28-2 after one quarter; this week they led 21-0 after 16 minutes.

For Miami (4-5), the home loss was the most lopsided since 1968.

Titans Injury Report: Linebacker Colin McCarthy Questionable

The Wednesday injury report for the Tennessee Titans is now out as they prepare to host the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night in Nashville.

As expected, quarterback Jake Locker (left shoulder), running back Javon Ringer (knee), and tackle Mike Otto (knee) all were officially ruled out.

Linebacker Colin McCarthy (ankle) did not practice again Wednesday and is officially listed as questionable. Titans head coach Mike Munchak said Tuesday that he expected McCarthy to play, so he now looks to be a game-time decision and would be a huge loss on defense for the Titans if he can't go.

McCarthy to miss 2nd straight start due to ankle

Titans middle linebacker Colin McCarthy will be out against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, his second consecutive start missed since hurting his right ankle.

McCarthy hurt his ankle in the opener against the New England Patriots and has not practiced or played since. Coach Mike Munchak says Friday he hopes the defensive captain can return next week.

Offensive tackle Mike Otto is the only other Tennessee player who sat out practice Friday due to soreness in his right knee following arthroscopic surgery. He is questionable against the Detroit Lions.

Linebacker Zach Brown (knee), right guard Leroy Harris (right knee) and defensive tackle Mike Martin (foot) are probable for Sunday. Running back Javon Ringer (elbow) and defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks (knee) are questionable.

Titans LB Colin McCarthy Says Ankle Injury Isn't Serious

As if getting battered by the New England Patriots’ offense wasn’t bad enough, the Titans were left hoping that the ankle injury suffered by middle linebacker Colin McCarthy isn’t too serious.
McCarthy suffered the injury toward the latter end of the second quarter, limping off the field after a six-yard run by Danny Woodhead. He came back before halftime and actually started the third quarter, but was soon replaced by Will Witherspoon when it became clear the ankle was still giving him problems.
McCarthy was sporting a walking boot in the locker room following the contest, and he wasn’t much interested in talking about the injury.
“I just tweaked my ankle. I’ll be fine,” McCarthy said before leaving the locker room.
Said Titans coach Mike Munchak: “(McCarthy) came back in and went back out, so we’ll need to see exactly where he is and how sore he is.” Source: The Tennessean Attached Thumbnails

Titans Feel They Have A Core Player In LB Colin McCarthy

The Titans believe they may have found a potential core player in Colin McCarthy. They figured they were going to take it slowly in developing their fourth round pick, but McCarthy, a football junkie, was intent on acclimating quickly. He was at the Titans’ facility when the coaches showed up every morning, he practiced hard and tried to absorb as much as he could from veteran Barrett Ruud. When Ruud missed time with injuries, McCarthy stepped in. He started seven games, showed excellent instincts, and made an impact. Source: National Football Post Attached Thumbnails

Titans Insider: Colin McCarthy shows his worth

The Titans might not be ready to make it official just yet, but it is coming.

Rookie middle linebacker Colin McCarthy needs to be the starter for the remainder of the season and beyond.

McCarthy has played the past three games (two starts) for the Titans while Barrett Ruud has nursed a groin injury.

Ruud was signed to a one-year contract just after the lockout ended and was expected to at least hold the position this season while the Titans evaluated what they had in McCarthy, a fourth-round pick from the University of Miami.

Now 11 games into the season, the Titans can be certain that what they have in McCarthy: a playmaker who is seemingly always around the football creating havoc.

There are two types of defensive players -- some who find the football, and others whom the football finds. In that regard, McCarthy is certainly of the former variety.

In three games filling in for Ruud, McCarthy has posted 32 tackles, including five for losses. He forced a fumble Nov. 20 against the Falcons. On Sunday aga
