3x-Italian cycling champ Visconti banned 3 months

Three-time Italian cycling champion Giovanni Visconti has been banned for three months for seeing banned physician Michele Ferrari.

The Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping court also hit Visconti with a $13,000 fine. Former Giro d'Italia champion Michele Scarponi received an identical sentence this week for seeing Ferrari.

Ferrari was banned for life by the Italian cycling federation in 2002. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency also banned Ferrari for life this year after its inquiry of Lance Armstrong, whom Ferrari advised.

Visconti's ban was backdated to Oct. 8 and will expire on Jan. 7, meaning he won't miss any races.

Cyclist banned 3 months for seeing banned doctor

Former Giro d'Italia winner Michele Scarponi has been banned for three months by the Italian Olympic Committee for seeing banned physician Michele Ferrari.

Scarponi admitted this year that he had two tests under Ferrari's supervision on the Monzuno climb near Bologna in September, 2010, but said he didn't know the doctor was banned.

Ferrari was banned for life by the Italian Cycling Federation in 2002. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency also recently banned Ferrari for serving as a doping consultant on Lance Armstrong's winning teams.

Scarponi won the 2011 Giro after Alberto Contador was stripped of the title for doping.

Scarponi's ban began retroactively Oct. 1 and expires the end of this month. His lawyer, Alessandro Sivelli, argued that Ferrari's name does not appear on a banned list.

Top riders linked to banned doctor

At least 15 more cyclists are being linked to Lance Armstrong's banned Italian sport doctor in an intricate scheme of money laundering, tax evasion and widespread doping.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reports that former Giro d'Italia winners Michele Scarponi and Denis Menchov, and this year's Olympic champion Alexandre Vinokourov, are under investigation for doping under the supervision of Dr. Michele Ferrari.

Citing documents from an inquiry led by Padua prosecutor Benedetto Roberti, the Gazzetta details how Ferrari allegedly masterminded a $40 million operation whereby riders and teams avoided taxes by recycling money through Gibraltar, Monte Carlo, Switzerland and South America.

Ferrari was barred for life by the Italian Cycling Federation in 2002.

Ferrari and the cyclists deny wrongdoing.

Voeckler wins Tour's 10th stage

Thomas Voeckler of France led a five-rider breakaway to win the 10th stage of the Tour de France as the race entered the Alps on Wednesday, while Bradley Wiggins retained the overall lead.

The 120.9-mile ride from Macon-sur-Valserine marked a return to racing after a tumultuous rest day in which a Cofidis rider was suspended by his team following his arrest by police in a doping probe.

For the first time in the Tour, the peloton scaled the 10.9-mile Grand Colombier pass - classified as one of the hardest climbs in pro cycling in part for two tough patches with steep, 12 percent gradients.

Voeckler, the Europcar rider who wore the yellow jersey for 10 days last year, got his third Tour stage victory from a decade in cycling's premier race.

With a few miles to go, Voeckler dusted off the breakaway group, beating runner-up Michele Scarponi of Italy by 3 seconds. Jens Voigt of Germany - at 40 the oldest rider this year - was third, another 4 seconds slower.

Scarponi doping hearing on Ferrari links postponed

Italian anti-doping prosecutors have postponed the questioning of Michele Scarponi over his alleged links to a doctor, who was banned from cycling for consulting with athletes on banned substances.

Scarponi's questioning was scheduled for Wednesday, but the Italian National Olympic Committee says it has accepted the cyclist's request to reschedule it for some time after the Tour de France.

No new date has been set. The Tour runs from June 30 to July 22.

Scarponi won the 2011 Giro d'Italia after Alberto Contador was stripped of the title for doping. He's facing a ban of up to six months if he's found to have consulted with the doctor, Michele Ferrari. The doctor was banned for life from the sport by the Italian Cycling Federation in 2002.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency recently brought doping charges against Ferrari, who had served as a consultant on Lance Armstrong's winning teams.

Tiralongo Triumphant, Hesjedal Leap Frogs Into Leader’s Jersey – 95th Giro d’italia, Stage 7

The first mountain top finish of this year's Giro d'Italia would go to Italian, Paolo Tiralongo of the Astana Pro Team. Locked in an uphill duel with countryman, Michele Scarponi (Lampre - ISD), during the closing kilometers of Stage 6 to Rocca di Cambio, Tiralongo patiently bided his time before jettisoning past Scarponi for the win.
Frank Schleck (RadioShack-Nissan) rounded out the day's podium in third; finishing a mere three seconds behind Tiralongo.
In the race for the maglia rosa, Garmin-Barracuda's Ryder Hesjedal took over the top place on the General Classification as Adriano Malori (Lampre - ISD) faltered on the day's final climb. Hesjedal, who finished in 5th on the stage, became the first Canadian in the long history of the Giro d'Italia to wear the pink leader's jersey.

Basso aims for 3rd win as Giro to begin in Denmark

The biggest obstacles in Ivan Basso's bid to win his third Giro d'Italia could come from the Lampre squad and a host of foreign riders.

The year's first major cycling tour kicks off Saturday with three stages in Denmark.

Basso won the Giro in 2006 and 2010. While his early season form this year hasn't been spectacular, he's the closest thing the race has to a favorite. Alberto Contador is serving a doping ban that stripped him of last year's title, and Tour de France champion Cadel Evans is focusing on that race.

Basso may be challenged by Michele Scarponi, who was bumped up to last year's winner, along with Scarponi's Lampre teammate Damiano Cunego. Also in the field is Frank Schleck, who finished third in last year's Tour.

The race ends in Milan on May 27.

Scarponi to get Contador's pink Giro jersey

Giro d'Italia organizers are planning to present Michele Scarponi with the pink jersey as last year's champion after Alberto Contador was stripped of the honor for doping.

Giro general director Michele Acquarone told The Associated Press that the presentation will be held next Thursday in Denmark, two days before this year's race kicks off with three stages in the Scandinavian country.

In February, Contador received a two-year ban that was backdated, annulling his 2011 Giro win, among other races.

''For the fans, Contador won the race last year and he wore the pink jersey in Milan. But according to the ban Contador never raced, so statistically Scarponi becomes the winner,'' Acquarone said Thursday in a phone interview.

Scarponi had finished second last year - 6 minutes, 10 seconds behind Contador - fellow Italian Vincenzo Nibali was third and John Gadret of France was fourth.

Acquarone also said that Scarponi will wear the No. 1 jersey in the May 5-27 race which ends in Milan
