Our Iron-Chinned Intern Is Keeping His Death-Stare On The Prize

Uncle Mike is not to be trifled with. Ask Joel Quenneville. I'd send you to Bruce Boudreau but he is still eating his feelings and can't speak between bites of ice-cream covered corndogs. While Babcock continues to strike fear into his opponents, it was not always that way.

At least that's what George tells us.

During the second intermission of a playoff game in 2002, Holland recalled Babcock telling him he wanted to be the next coach of the Red Wings.

"I don't hire interns,'' Holland said he told Babcock. "The next year, he knocked us out of the playoffs."

If you aren't aware of the political machinations of a corporation, "I don't hire interns." is the equivalent to "Shut your ***** mouth." around here, and I can dig it.

In that moment of absolute heartbreak Uncle Mike realized something that has stuck with him since. The sweet baby Jesus does not let you join the greatest sports Organ-I-zation in th...

NHL announces coach-of-the-year finalists

The finalists for the Jack Adams award for the coach of the year were announced by the NHL on May 17. This season’s nominees are the Anaheim Ducks’ Bruce Boudreau, the Ottawa Senators’ Paul MacLean and the Chicago Blackhawks’ Joel Quenneville. Both Quenneville and Boudreau are former winners of the award. Quenneville won it for the 1999/2000 season when he was head coach of the league-leading St. Louis Blues and Boudreau took it home after the 2007/08 season as coach of the Washington Capitals. MacLean was also nominated for the trophy last season, but he came in second to Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues in the voting. If Quenneville or Boudreau happen to beat out MacLean for the award they will become the fifth coach to win it with two different clubs. The only person to win the trophy on three occasions was Pat Burns as he won it with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. Boudreau said there are so many good coaches currently in the NHL so it’s ...

Ducks' Boudreau finalist for NHL Coach of the Year

NEW YORK (AP) -- Joel Quenneville, Bruce Boudreau and Paul MacLean are finalists for the Jack Adams Award, given to the head coach who has contributed most to his team's success.

The NHL announced the nominees on Friday. The winner will be announced during the Stanley Cup final.

Quenneville led Chicago to a league-best 36-7-5 mark after opening the season by earning a point in each of its first 24 games, setting an NHL record. Quenneville previously won the award in 2000 with St. Louis.

"We're pretty happy with where we're at as a coaching staff but all the credit is deserved for the players and what they have accomplished this year," Quenneville said. "You've got to commend them from the start of the season, the way they prepared themselves, the consistency, the way they competed, the predictability in their game, it was fun being a part of it."

In his first full season in Anaheim, Boudreau led the Ducks to the Pacific Division title and the second seed in the Western

Boudreau Named Jack Adams Finalist

The NHL announced the three finalists for the coach of the year award (the Jack Adams trophy). Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau is one of the three, the first time a Ducks coach has been nominated. Joel Quenneville (Chicago) and Paul MacLean (Ottawa) are the other two finalists.

The criteria for the award is the coach who has “contributed the most to his team’s success.” The NHL Broadcasters’ Association votes on this award.

Boudreau has been nominated before and won the award in the 2007-2008 season as head of the Washington Capitals.

"He's a players' coach," said Teemu Selanne. "He makes everybody feel very important. Everybody just [loves] to play for him."

Boudreau took over as coach in December 2011, succeeding Randy Carlyle in the position. His turnaround was almost immediate. This season he helped lead the Ducks to the Pacific Division title and the second seed in the Western Conference. It was their best finish since wi...

A Bruce Boudreau coached team suffers another playoff letdown

The Anaheim Ducks finished second in the Western Conference, winning their second Pacific Division banner and giving their fans high hopes for the post-season. They were expected to make the playoffs this season, but the finish, despite the presence of superstars like Corey Perry, Teemu Selanne, Bobby Ryan, and Ryan Getzlaf, was a pleasant surprise.

A team with a 30-12-6 record was just knocked out of the playoffs by a team with a 24-16-8 record in a hard-fought seven game series. There's nothing to be ashamed of by that, except for the fact that the Ducks were outgunned when it mattered by a smarter Detroit team. People who counted the Red Wings out this season did so at their own risk. Mike Babcock is one of the best coaches in the league, and he proved it this series.

Bruce Boudreau was, again, outmatched. He actually told the Detroit Free Press' Helene St. James that he was mentally tired after each game:

Bruce Boudreau miffed by Anaheim's poor defense

Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau is imploring his team to get back to defensive basics.
His team lost consecutive games to the Phoenix Coyotes in 5-4 shootouts. Boudreau played each of his goaltenders and got the same result.
This left him most displeased.“I was hoping it wasn’t a repeat,” Boudreau told reporters during his postgame briefing. “I’m more upset to give up … the last five games we’ve given up a four, four and five goals against. You can’t just give that up and expect to win this game. It’s not going to happen.“Even though we do a lot of preaching about defense, we’re going to have to get back to basics.”This slippage might bode well for rangy defenseman Bryan Allen, who is still trying to lock down his regular spot in the lineup. He sat out the last two games.“We’re putting out guys that we know should be able to play and should be able to defend,” Boudreau said. “Including last game, that’s four times, we take the lead and they scored within five minutes.
Ducks face Coyotes for second straight time

PHOENIX In nearly four decades around professional hockey, Bruce Boudreau has seen a lot of strange things. But the coach can't remember seeing a team play consecutive games on the road in the same city during the regular season, something his division-leading Ducks will do Monday night when they meet the Phoenix Coyotes for the second time in three nights in Arizona.

"I can't recall. In recent years anyway," Boudreau said. "But I'm getting old, so maybe my memory's getting old too."

Forward Bobby Ryan's memory is a lot fresher. And he can't remember seeing it either.

"Nothing like this," he said. "It has a playoff feel to it."

You can thank the peculiarities of the lockout-shortened schedule for the history. That's the same schedule that has both teams flying to Anaheim after Monday's game to meet again Wednesday at Honda Center, marking the first time outside of the postseason the Ducks will play three consecutive games against t

Ducks sign Boudreau to two-year extension

ANAHEIM, Calif. The Ducks announced Thursday that the club has signed head coach Bruce Boudreau to a two-year contract extension through the 2014-15 NHL season. Boudreau was originally under contract with Anaheim through 2012-13. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Since joining the organization last November, Bruce has done an outstanding job with the team, said Executive Vice PresidentGeneral Manager Bob Murray. Hes committed to us and determined to lead us back to the playoffs.

Boudreau, 57 (1955), was named the eighth head coach in team history on Nov. 30, 2011 and led the Ducks to a 27-23-8 record in 58 games last season, including a 24-15-6 mark in 2012 that ranked fifth in the Western Conference. All-time, Boudreau has compiled a 228-111-48 record in 387 career NHL games with Anaheim and Washington for a .651 win percentage. Since making his debut as a head coach with Washington on Nov. 23, 2007, Boudreau is tied with Detroits Mike Babcock for the most standings points earned (504)
