Ford Racing Celebrates 1,000 NASCAR Wins

DEARBORN, MI – Henry Ford’s win over Alexander Winton on Oct. 10, 1901 in what proved to be his only race as a driver was a milestone victory that helped launch the Ford Motor Company.
Since then there have been several more memorable moments with the latest coming today at Michigan International Speedway, where Greg Biffle took the checkered flag and registered Ford’s 1,000th all-time NASCAR victory. That total includes 100 wins from Lincoln-Mercury in what is known today as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and 900 combined Ford-branded victories in NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World Series competition.
“Here we are in the summer of 2013 celebrating Henry Ford’s 150th birthday and in the same year we’re celebrating our 1,000th win in NASCAR,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “We all know how Ford Motor Company started, and I think reaching this milestone really honors the spirit of what Henry Ford started.”

Four of the five inductees who comprise the 2014 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame – Dale Jarrett, Maurice Petty, Tim Flock and Jack Ingram – have ties to Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR’s Most Competitive Track or the fine state of Alabama.
The quartet, who will also be joined by the legendary Fireball Roberts, was announced during a ceremony Wednesday evening in Charlotte, NC, after all votes were cast by the 54-member NASCAR Hall of Fame voting panel.
Dale Jarrett
Jarrett, the 1999 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion, was stellar at Talladega’s 2.66-mile layout during his career, capturing two checkered flags – the 1998 and 2005 Camping World RV Sales 500 (formerly Winston 500) – and claiming 11 top-five finishes in NASCAR’s premier division. He also competed in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and IROC on Talladega’s high banks.

Jarretts, Pettys add family to class

Ned Jarrett's eyes glistened with moisture as he spoke with reporters minutes after his son Dale was announced as one of five members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2014, joining Maurice Petty, Tim Flock, Fireball Roberts and Jack Ingram for January's inductions.

The elder Jarrett, himself a NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee in 2011, spoke eloquently about the role of family in NASCAR's history and how it helped he and Dale become the third combination of fathers and sons in the hall, along with Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr. and Lee and Richard Petty.

"This sport -- NASCAR -- has been built on families, starting with the France family," said Ned. "And there were so many other great families down the list. We're just happy to be a small part of that."

Asked if it was more emotional seeing his son getting in or getting inducted himself, the elder Jarrett smiled. "It was pretty close," he said. "One was about as emotional than the other. ... It's ha

The 2014 class for the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte was decided upon Wednesday afternoon.
The voting panel for the Hall of Fame’s fifth class consisted of; 54 media members, track operators, retired racers and others active in the sport to select five of the 25 inductees to make up the class of 2014.

Flock, Petty highlight new class

The NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2014 was selected Wednesday afternoon, with Tim Flock, Maurice Petty, Dale Jarrett, Jack Ingram and Fireball Roberts joining the 20 members inducted from 2010-13.

A voting panel of 54 media members, track operators, retired racers and others active in the sport selected the five from a list of 25 nominees.

Here are the new inductees:

Tim Flock

A two-time series champion in the NASCAR premier series, Flock was one of the sport's first dominant drivers.

Flock had 39 victories in only 187 starts. His victory total still ranks 18th on the all-time wins list. Flock won his first series title in 1952 while driving Ted Chester's Hudson Hornet. He had eight wins and 22 top fives in 33 starts.

Flock won his second series title in 1955 driving Carl Kiekhaefer's Chrysler. He dominated that season, posting 18 wins, 32 top fives and 18 poles in 39 races. Flock's 18 wins stood as a single-season victory record until Richard Petty surpassed it with 27 wins in 1967.

Jarrett, Bruton Smith headline new Hall nominees

NASCAR champion Dale Jarrett headlined the 25 nominees announced Wednesday for next year's Hall of Fame class - a list that finally includes track magnate Bruton Smith.

Only five nominees are new to the list, with the other 20 carrying over from last year. Joining Jarrett and Smith as the new nominees were engine builder Maurice Petty, five-time NASCAR weekly series national champion Larry Phillips and 1960 NASCAR champion Rex White. Five people will be selected for induction into the fifth Hall of Fame Class in May 22 voting by a 54-member panel.

The panel will finally get to consider Smith, who many believed had been snubbed by not being among the nominees the last four years. Smith promoted his first race at 18 years old, and later ran the National Stock Car Racing Association, which was seen as an early competitor to NASCAR.

He built Charlotte Motor Speedway, the anchor property in a portfolio that now includes eight tracks hosting 12 Sprint Cup races, the All-Star race and several high-profile mot

TV Changes To Nationwide Troubling

NASCAR announced this past week the broadcast schedule for the three top series. Mostly it is unchanged for Sprint Cup: Fox takes the first half, TNT again has the summer series, and ESPN/ABC takes us to Homestead. Similarly, the Camping World Truck Series entire schedule will be on SPEED. The greatest concern is what is happening to the Nationwide Series.
The Nationwide Series will once again be shown on ESPN and its various networks. ESPN will have 12 races, ESPN2 will have 15 races, ABC will have four races, and ESPNews will have two races. Wait, what? ESPNews will have two races? Why you might ask, well that is a funny story. The April 26th race at Richmond was bumped to ESPNews because of the NFL draft and a NBA basketball game. The September 21st race at Kentucky missed the cut for ESPN due to college football games.
I have not been a fan of ESPN’s handling of NASCAR since they brought it back in 2007, after a five year absence. Their coverage teams are not up to the standar...

Scott, Wallace headline new Hall of Fame nominees
